Would you take your child out of kindergarten for a vacation?

Okay since everyone is pretty much is agreement about taking your child out of school for a week. How would you feel is your teacher took off a week to take their child to Disney? I am a kindergarten teacher and I do agree that family time is very important and do not see the harm of taking a child out of school for a vacation. I too like everyone else do not want to go in the summer- too hot. My children have the week off for President's week (Feb 16-20). However, my school only gives us the 19th and 20th off, so I am taking 4 days off to go to Disney (we are leaving on the 13th). I worry about how my parents will react that I will be MIA. How would you react?

P.S. I took my son out of school last year for a week when he was in Kdg.

I'd say go have a great time!!! Life is too short & you only live once. No one can predict the future & what will happen tomorrow. You should go have fun, enjoy yourself & enjoy spending time with your children. It'll be worth it. :D

That is my attitude too!! I just hope my parents will understand and not tell me that is what summer vacation is for:rolleyes:

Based on the reason you gave, I'd be upset. If you were taking the trip because your husband isn't able to take vacation during school break I'd understand. If the trip was a big family vacation that could not be scheduled some other time, I'd understand.

But to say my child will miss a week of instruction because his
teacher doesn't want to go to WDW when it's hot??

I just said it was too hot, not that I couldn't stand the heat. It is my son who can't stand the heat. Besides that is the same reason why some other people are taking their children out of school (less crowded and the heat), so why can't I do it too. I leave the substitue teacher very detailed lesson plans and have parent helpers in my room daily, so they will be getting their daily instruction.

Besides that I need to take courses in the summer or attend other inservices in order to keep my teaching certificate and unfortunately I don't always know the dates of the classes until
a month or so prior to summer vacation.

I probably should have put that in my last response.

tanman - again, I would not feel guilty. I know of 3 teachers in our district that took vacations for honeymoons over the last 2 months. One was my freshman DD's English teacher. I could have asked - why didn't you get married in the summer or over Spring Break? There was a sub & they got instruction.

Enjoy what you can do now. Life can change in an instant! No job, whether it's a teaching job or not, is more important than spending time with your family. Kids grow up too quick & lives can change at the drop of a hat.

Have a great time when you go. :teeth:

I took my son out for MNSSHP, his k-teacher was wonderful. He had to draw a picture of something he did everyday and then write at least one sentence about it!!! ( he wanted to write abot the tower of terror everyday!!!) If his teacher wanted to go vacation for a week I say go for it, they have lives too. I already planned next years trip over teacher conf. week. Then he will only miss 3 days of school, I will do it everyyear unless he starts to do bad in school.

MELSMICE and vic32,

Thanks for the encouragement. I think for the most part my parents will understand. I have already told some of my parent helpers and they have the same attitude that you two do.

BTW, I did get married in the falltime(nine years ago) and I postponed my honeymoon until x-mas break so that it didn't interfere with my teaching. But since having kids, my perspective on life has changed and they come first no matter what!!!!!!

P.S vic32, If your child is writing a sentence in kdg, I would say that he has a great start on his education!!!!!
