Would you take both lens?

I have the Olympus 510 with the 14-42 and the 40-150mm lens. Going to London and Paris next week with my dd's school. I've read a lot of information about pick pockets, theft etc.---I may have read too much:confused3

I'm trying to tour hauling a light load everyday as I do have some issues with my arms and shoulder. Should I take both lens or would the 14-42 be the lens to get the most use. What would you do?

In Disney, I've took both, but sometimes leave one in the room safe. Our hotel will not have a room safe in London--only a safe with the front desk.

Thanks for your input!

Keep things in zippered pockets, and bags. Use strong caribiners to lock things to your belt loops for example. Use a luggage lock to lock your zipper so you can be confident while backpacking around.

It is good to play it safe but in my experience(5 trips to Europe) and my parents(too many trips to count) it isn't a common experience to be pick pocketed. We have never had a problem, even on crowded subways. Not to say it can't happen in any big city, though. In Paris and Rome I did the small caribiner clip through the zipper pulls of my backpack, to be extra safe and brought a pocketbook with a long strap to wear across my body, camera carried that way also(same in Boston, NYC and DC), so no one can grab and run with it. Also, be aware of the people around you. If you are on a crowded subway with a backpack on, try and stand with your back to the side of the subway so no one is behind you or with your back to someone thats with you so they can keep an eye out. For men, carry your wallet/money clip in a front pocket, its much harder pick a front pocket than a back one. Most of all enjoy. I have never been to London but have been to Paris, DD is going to school there now, its an awesome city. DD is loving it there.
I don't know what to tell you about the lens issue except that I don't think you will find much need for the longer lens in the city. Though, I have an 18-135 for my walk around lens. If you are looking to get closer up details in say Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower the longer lens would be handy.

Btw....I read too much info about pick pockets before I went, too. Had myself a bit paranoid. Once there, though, I relaxed:goodvibes

Thank you so much for the encouragement about the theft worries! I also really believe that once I'm there, I'll relax about it all. I have a pac safe bag that I've added some of my padding from camera bags to the inside. I can wear it cross body too. There will be around 45 in our group--mostly 15-18 year olds.

I have some caribiner clips, but I believe I'll get a few smaller ones to take along too.

Thanks for the advise!!:wizard:

Hi Kim!

I have an E600, after giving my E520 to my oldest DD and an assortment of lenses. Also I'm going to London 4 weeks from today! Since I'll be traveling alone with my DD who will turn 9 while there, I've decided to travel as light as I can. I bought the E-PL2 with the 14-42 lens.

It fits into my backpack and I'll probably get a neoprene case or something like it to help protect it while in there. I keep debating on whether to pick up the adapter to use my 4/3rd lenses with it or else getting the m40-150 lens. But I think for London, I'll just keep the 14-42 since I think that would get a lot more use.

Usually I keep the 12-60 on my E600 and I might miss the wider range, but the PEN is sooo much smaller and lighter. So far, I'm really loving it!

Post some pictures when you get back! I'm also considering a day trip to Paris, but there will be plenty to keep us busy in and around London.

Kim - I'm an Olympus user as well. The 40-150 isn't all that large or heavy so you may also want to think about a lens case / pouch that can be attached to a belt, purse strap, etc.

I usually find that you don't need a particular lens until you decide not to bring it with you.

Enjoy your trip!!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm getting my packing stuff organized today and I'm leaning toward bringing both lens.

The people on this board are always so helpful and quick to respond!!
