Would You Still Write To The BBB...?

Ya know what. I just realized that one my windows in the house up north, they all had writing on them. I just looked at my windows here and sure enough, they have writing too. It's something I never gave a thought to. :confused3

LOL... it's not writing, it's etched scratches... Like this

III I IIIIIII III III I IIIIIII I
III I IIIIIII III III I IIIIIII I

If it were simply writing, it would make sense! That's not a defect.

On the FIRST window, it was bigger and dead center, but more circular.

Now it's at the bottom.

Who knows. Who cares anymore!

I'm not at home... It's at the bottom, but anyone could see it... About 5" long, 1/2" tall. Looks like DNA.

I don't knowwhat it matters, it's still defective. It's like, would you buy a brand new car with a scratch that size in one of the windows? Probably not.

Like I said before, I'd have to see what it actually looks like to make judgment. :confused3 Sorry.

Yeah... Still, that's not the point! They gave up on making it right... Now, if we choose to fix it, it's just that ... WE have to fix it!

It sounds like they were really way over their heads. Whatever they touched got worse. They obviously ordered from the wrong place that consistently does a crap job, they scratch other things while there. Do you really want them in your house anymore? Sounds like even they knew to raise their hands and back slowly away.

I would have stopped using them after the siding got scratched, but you keep wanting to use them again. I'd rather pay someone else $400 who can do it once right.

You also said:
Actually, my husband watched them for the hour it took to install it. It looked fine until we Windexed the fingerprints off... Then we noticed the etching.

My husband inspected it before installation, but it was only once it was IN that you could see it.

So even they couldn't see the etching till after it was in and clean. :confused3

And no, we hadn't paid them anything.

We owed them about $4000 including the window, and our contractor said "Just keep the window, don't pay for it, but make sure you pay us our $3200 for the other work, and we will call it even."

Yeah, thanks. Now we can fool around replacing YOUR defective window.

Why didn't you say something then to them about this when they said that? You should have renegotiated how much you owe then, and brought up that you will have to get the panes replaced. Did you or DH face them in person and say this to them?

Yeah... Still, that's not the point! They gave up on making it right... Now, if we choose to fix it, it's just that ... WE have to fix it!

Yes but you choose to have it replaced in the first place right? This is not the one they damaged accidently but one you wanted replaced?

So they have really left you where you originally were and that new window didn't cost you anything ~ so you could take the 1200 you were going to pay for it someplace else.

I guess I am confused what you would expect to gain by going to the BBB? If there is no other resolution then..... ? I mean they can't give you your money back.

I don't want any money!!!

I just want consumers to be aware... Or beware!!! I thought the BBB was reliable, I now see it isn't.

I will tell my story on Angie's List now. I like their commercials ;)

Maybe someone else can prevent their own disaster by hearing of our foolish mistake keeping up with this company.

LOL.. I can't believe that people are actually asking (practically insisting) that you post photos of your window..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Maybe you could invite them all over - make it a DIS meet! :thumbsup2

I don't even know how you would take a picture of what she is describing! LOL!

I just think (and I could be wrong) that the BBB is something you use when a company is non-responsive to a problem and you need help getting it resolved. I view them as a go between for the customer and the company and if the company is still unresponsive they get the bad rating.

LOL! I am so over it!

For the LAST TIME...

No, my husband couldn't see the scratches while the glass was on the side of the truck. He couldn't see them when they took it off the truck. He couldn't see them when they wiped the window down before installing. It was ONLY when it was in, cleaned of fingerprints, and had sun shining through it, that you could see the scratch.

I don't know how this doesn't make sense. It's like when you clean your windows outside, and they look perfect, but once you go back inside, you see streaks.

We didn't negotiate a price with them, because we didn't WANT money. That was NEVER the issue. Ever.

All I asked about was if you would make other consumers aware.

Again, I had no idea they were so shady. Now I know!

From your description, it doesn't sound like they could see the etching, either, until it was installed. Did you actually order a whole window from a company or did they just order replacement glass on their own? To me, this sounds more like a problem with the window manufacturer, unless these people were cutting glass to fit an existing window. If you ordered a whole window then maybe you should contact the manufacturer to complain about their quality control and to see if they'll send you a replacement.

:confused3 I honestly was just curious how noticeable it was from a distance and all. I could give a rat's butt less if she really posts a picture or not.

I'm sure you really were just curious, but have you ever tried to take a photo of a window? Much less one with etching damage on the lower part of it? I'm thinking you would need a very, very expensive type of camera for that to show up - if even then.. "Maybe" a professional photographers camera would catch it, but who knows? :) Photography is not my strong suit..LOL..

She explained it the best she could and it really struck me funny that people wanted actual photos.. Sorry if I offended you..:goodvibes

My DH works for a national window company. I can tell you that they have been absolutely swamped the last few months and installations are scheduled weeks out. The window has to be made to order and then installation scheduled. Late August to early November is not unheard of. His local office just broke a record selling 1000 windows just in October. People want them in before winter sets in.
You got a free window; sounds like a good deal to me. From what I hear of DH's company (and their windows don't cost $1200 so I don't think it is, although they just closed an office in the Detroit area), they would have replaced that window again and taken the money instead of giving you the defective window for free.
Remember folks, for every story like this there is someone on the other side. Sorry AKL Megs, but from being a spouse of a home improvement contractor for 25 years, I never take complaints without a BRICK of salt. Some people are just never happy.
