Would you return to a company that laid you off?

DH is considering moving back to the company that laid him off. They offer better pay, better insurance, and bonuses. The company also would allow him to work from home quite often and being that we have a big commute, that would be nice. He would get paid every 2 weeks (which is also a plus).

The company he is with now, is having issues and laying off people. He IS exempt from these layoffs but the contract that keeps him exempt is only good until 2008. They also frown upon people working from home and offered him a 4 day work week but they haven't yet followed through. We get paid monthly with this company and I hate it.

The old company is doing better and reporting good earnings again. The big downside is that they laid him off before. He got a good severance package, so it isn't like they pulled a fast one on him.

What would you do?

I guess it depends on the situation, especially with how the layoff went. I was laid off once and I know I'd never return to that company, but not necessarily because they laid me off, but rather because I didn't like the company from the moment we went through a merger. They called it a "merger", but we, in essence, got bought out and the company that took us over changed a lot of things that I didn't agree with.

If going back doesn't effect his prev. package it sounds like a good move.

If he was dealt with fairly and it was for legitimate reasons (ie company was in a bind/lost clients etc and had to downsise) and they treated my properly it wouldn't stop me from going back.

I've had my job eliminated once from within my company and found something before we go to the "laid off" stage. It didn't occur to me to leave because they had gotten rid of that department. If I had left due to that I would have considered going back.

That's tough. If it was a legitimate layoff, due to financial hardships, and they treated him right, which it sounds like they did, I would consider it. But not until I did considerable research on their current financial situation.

From the sounds of it, it looks like a good move to go back if the company truly is more stable now and there isn't the threat of being laid off again.

The company was having tough times as they deal with stock trades and the CEO made some poor business decisions. That CEO is now gone and the original CEO (who had stepped down to essentially be a figurehead) is back and pulled the company out of the pit.

He did get an extremely fair package when he left. He was with them for about 7 years total (had contracted for them before he was hired) and it was always a good company to work for. I'm not sure about bridging his service. Certainly something to ask about.

It depends on the circumstances and the management. If I liked the old job and wished I had not been laid off but the reasons were legitimate-I'd consider returning.

I did.

My employer was moving departments out of state to another facility they owned (rather than leased). My department was moved-and I was one of three laid off, as my then fiance's department was moving, too. They knew he'd stay with his department and move, and they didn't want to pay relocation to both.

I started interviewing at the facility in Maryland before we'd even moved there. A month after the move, I was rehired, but in a different department. Very different situation, but it can be done. (yes, my time was bridged)

It sounds like the issues that brought about your husband's layoff in the first place have been remedied. If I were in his position, and enjoyed working there, I'd go back.

Depends on the reason for the layoff last time and if I was happy there before. I was let go from one company. While I loved what I did, I would never go back, not for any amount of money. The owner and GM were not nice people.

So, if he was happy there, and thr reason for the lay off has been fixed, then why not go back?

I agree with the others...it would depend on the circumstances such as how they handled the lay-off, their current financial standing, the previous relationships with management, etc. If I was treated right and knew the lay-off was legit and that they're stable now, I'd have no problem going back.

I was laid off once and would not go back. It was handled poorly and we had no notice. Plus, I hated the company. :bitelip:

However, if I liked working for the company and the lay off was well handled I might go back. It seems like there are a lot of good points about going back. Good Luck!

I did.... 3x!!!!

But for my company, that is how you get made permanent. At some point you end up sticking around... now I have about 15 people with less seniority than I have.

My father did, when he was a young hourly.

Worked his way up the ranks.

Retired as one of the head honchos.
