Would you rent from this Member . . . 2nd Update post 41, p 3

I'm a BLT owner and called about a month ago for Thanksgiving. It was hard to get even then. I got a 2 bedroom lake view for 4 nights. That's all they had for a 2 bedroom. What did you get?

lake view studio for friday and saturday night of thanksgiving weekend.

Good Idea, Brandis!!!

Also, I bet if you call Member Services just to verify the reservation is still in place, they might confirm. I know they always verify information, but if you can at least verify the names on the reservation as well as your address, then they might at least give you a yes/no on the confirmation.

What a waste of time. The reservation can be canceled at anytime and the renter would never know unless they check several times a day and that is ridiculous. If they really are worried, then they shouldn't rent.

Please do not suggest people renting points to contact member services. Members pay for those calls, and how many times does it have to be noted that member services does not deal with renters.

Yikes. Sorry. Wow, here I was thinking that since the "renters" are paying for it still, and you are getting PAID to rent it to them, a phone call might be warranted.

Take a chill pill please.

Wow! I've never seen a more judgmental group of people.

I understand the reservation could still be canceled, but the issue was that the renter couldn't even find the original confirmation online.

The reason Member Services will not speak to non-Members is that they are not set up to be a be a travel agency to assist member that are renting their points for profit at the expense of all the other members. DVC has a totally "hands off" policy about involving them selves in private transactions, it could potentially lead to litigation and legal actions if they did so.

There was an incident years ago where a member had rented a reservation, then sold the membership. The renter showed up with no reservation, at that time Member Services did confirm reservations and speak to non-Members. The guests were eventually placed at a cash resort at a highly discounted rate. It was unclear if it was partly funded by DVC/DVD or simply discounted by Disney for good will, but I don't think either Disney entity wants to put themselves in that position.

If I recall correctly from when I rented DVC sends confirmation, I'd ask them to scan and email that before I pay any large amount of $.

Good Luck.

When we rent our points, we don't require any money until the renter receives a scanned copy of the reservation in their name. We always have both parties sign a contract as well. If you're more comfortable with a contract, ask the owner to review and sign it with you.

Actually, Bill is not being judgemental at all.

He's just stating a simple fact, and it is THE central fact in any rental transaction: The owner controls the reservation until you check in, and anyone who is uncomfortable with that would be much better off going directly through Disney Central Reservations.

Renters are much better advised to invest their time and energy in finding an owner they are comfortable renting from than wasting their time and energy with things that mean nothing. Trust is everything in a rental; nothing else matters much.

If you're not comfortable, don't go looking for fixes -- just walk away. You'll never get hurt walking away.

Its a little more complicated than that, isn't it? Flags for concern.

1. The renter can't find the confirmation online. (Could be misspelled).
2. The owner has very few DisBoard posts (not a member of the community, not that people outside our community are crooks, but those that have invested in our community have a sense of ownership of the community and a reputation to maintain.)
3. The owner was able to secure an unlikely reservation that other owners the renter had worked with said wasn't available. (Some people ARE lucky with these things).
4. The owner is a new owner (Jim's standard advice is rentals that go bad are often not out of ill intent, but because the owner and the renter really don't understand how it works. Someone with a short ownership is more likely to not understand how it works).

On the plus side:

1. They turn up in a search as being owners and their personal information checks out.
2. They work in a "good profession" that is apparently googleable.
3. There was a believable conference call with Member Services.

The renter can gain immediate access to their reservation by putting in the reservation number supplied by the owner, at www.mydisneyreservation.com/dvc. I also mail out the confirmation letter, but this sometimes can take up to two weeks to get out to the owner.

but this is part of the problem. I did use this link and it did not come up - and I spelled my name in every imaginable way possible - as well as the member's name.

I know you are concerned about the number of posts the member has; did they have more than you did when you started this thread? You don't have very many either.

OP here. Thank you everyone for all of your thoughts - I read all of them and they truly did help me make a decision. Like I said, I'm a long time DIS'er (first time caller :) ) who wrote under another name this time so as not to offend anyone. I have rented DVC points in the past with great success and thought I would try again. In fact, I have DVC rented points for the other part of my trip. I thought to add days because I REALLY wanted BLT at a time which happened to be Thanksgiving weekend. I interacted with several DISer Renters who tried for me with BLT with no success. Then this one Member had that success. It clouded my judgment. I agree with those who say go with your gut and mine wasn't feeling so well. But then the siren call of BLT was reaching me. :rolleyes1 So I know you all are very experienced on both sides of the renting fence so I appreciate you taking the time to respond to me.

Then the reservation link gave me greater cause for concern bc it hasn't not come up no matter what I tried. My other DVC rented reservation came up, but not this. Then the straw that broke the camel's back happened today when I made reservations myself for another WDW trip and as soon as I hung up the phone, I got on that link and even so quickly, even that reservation was there. So it just doesn't feel right this time to me. But I shouldn't have let it get to this point - I should have trusted my gut earlier. And thanks to those who told me that. And the member from whom I was considering to rent may be a wonderful person and totally on the up and up, I just decided it was not for me. And it's another reason I didn't use my real DIS name - because I didn't want people to see which DIS DVC members I interacted with - I don't want anyone to get a bum rap because of my issues.

Thanks again and be sure I will rent DVC points again!

Thank you for that link to confirm reservations! I have rented points in both directions before, but did not know that link existed. I did just confirm one of my upcoming rented reservations.

I have also always sent the screen-shot of my DVC member page showing the reservation as soon as I have made it for someone. Then I send the actual confirmation paper on to them.

It has worked differently for renting points from other members, but I am usually confident in the people I am dealing with. I do usually look for post counts, read some posts, and even look for a history of renting. This just puts my mind at ease.

I should have stated that I also provide them with the ressie number in a confirmation e-mail as soon as I get off the phone with MS. Once I receive the paper confirmation, I scan it and e-mail it to them and then payment is expected within X days from that e-mail being sent.

I have rented since 2004 and this sounds correct, but there is no way to be 100%. I don't ask for and money until I receive the reservation from Disney and foward the orignal with my renters agreement.

Not to throw a curve ball at you, but Disney's DVC reservation system isn't exactly a high tech wonder from the future. While "The Link" is a huge step forward for DVC kind, it's still far from perfect.

I made a reservation for someone the other day and it wasn't showing up either. Turned out it was showing up under a name of someone else in their party even though they weren't the main name on the ressie. That may not be what's going on with yours, but I would definitely put it on the owner to figure out why it's not showing up under your name.

Most errors like this are caused my a CM who lists the names incorrectly on the reservation, or checks the wrong box. We have also found that the DVC software doesn't link directly to the Disney software that is used to display the reservation. Sometimes it posts almost immediately, other times it took several days. :confused3
