The "math" suggests doing the trip in one day. Some people can't safely drive that many hours. Will the toddler be sleeping, crying or be screaming out of control? Have you taken road trips before? How did it go?
While husband and I would do the trip in one day by ourselves, we've never done it with our toddler so I'm in unknown territory! We do a 2.5h trip pretty regularly to see grandparents. The longest trip we've done with him is 3h which turned into 4h with traffic. He is great in the car - naps, snacks, sings/chats with me and happy to entertain himself with junk like a plastic straw or cup lid...but he is WILD once he's out of the car, from all the pent up energy. There's no way we're driving 9h straight and will need breaks, even if is just to run laps up and down the sidewalk of a rest stop.
One idea. Don't book a hotel your first night. Grab a chain hotel off the road if driving isn't going well. Grab a hotel in DS or on Palm Parkway if you make it one day.
This is also a good idea that I had not considered, thanks! That will definitely give some flexibility and take the pressure off doing the drive in 1 day if it's not going well.
