Would you put your dc in a different h.s. because it had better sports program?

I also live in southwest MI. Have you thought about a private school for your DD. I know many soccer players that go to christian schools here and they are allowed to play for their travel team at the same time as their school team. My DD goes to public school and we have friends whose children are at christian schools and they comment about how well the private schools girls are doing and in my head I am always thinking, well if we could play year round too it would even the playing field. Just thought that could be another option for you.

No, I have not thought of a private school. I would imagine there would be tuition for those. I don't think dh would go for an added expense.;)
At this point, Im really leaning towards keeping her where she's at. The more info I have received from everyone here, Im looking at it as she will do well wherever she is and if she wants to play in college, like pp have stated, scouts will be watching travel teams as well as or more than h.s.

If you don't mind me asking, where in sw MI are your from? Im near Allegan.:)

clovergirl - if all things academic are equal my suggestion is to send your dd where "she" wants to go. If it is her decision then in this situation, I believe it will be the right decision. If she decides to go to the other school and then in a yr or 2 decides softball isn't her thing anymore, could she go back to her "hometown" school? I mean is she really making a 4 yr commitment that she couldn't change at some point.

My dd is also in 8th grade and currently goes to catholic school. For years now, she has been saying about HS that she wants to go to the public school. Fine we said. Well, just the beginning of this year, she said she's not so sure and wants to look at other schools. I am so glad she told me this in October rather than June. Turns out she is going to go to a catholic HS that is 20 miles away, but is the same school her cousins go to. The reason she decided to go with the catholic HS. She is afraid she wasn't going to make friends at the public school. Silly huh, yes and no.

Our public HS has a student body of over 2200 kids. In order to find you niche and fit in, it is stresses that you get involved in either sports or clubs. Everything is afterschool. Dd is a competitive gymnast who is in the gym 20 hrs a week and really can't do anything after school. When 1 of the catholic HS's was visiting her current school talking about the HS, the talked about how they have an activity period during the day. Dd is so excited that she will finally be able to participate in student gov't. The rest is history.

I've read the other posts talking about how if I just put the gym money away instead of having her at the level she is at that I could pay for college. Yes, when you just talk money, your are right. But there are so many things that my dd has learned from being involved in this sport that couldn't of been taught otherwise. Plus from a mom standpoint, she's out of trouble and with a great bunch of girls. I wouldn't change it for the world. Now that she is a higher level gymnast, I'd love a scholarship, but I know that is icing on the cake and would prefer a scholastic one over an athletic one any day of the week.

Yes, I have always thought that...She is involved in sports with girls I know and parents I know, and staying out of trouble. She is a good girl, but the boycrazy years haven't started yet:rotfl: and all the other peer pressure issues that are out there. That has always been high on my list as one of the reasons we encouraged sports so much and to make it available to them financially.

Clovergirl I am closer to GR. I too have heard from other parents that scouts look at the travel teams as much if not more than the high school teams. I totally understand about not wanting the added expense of private school, believe me, I just wanted to let you know that the rules are apparently different for them than the public schools.

Thank you, I appreciate it  Nice to meet you neighbor:goodvibes

That is not the rule here and it leads to some major conflicts!

Make sure you are talking about the same thing. I would be SHOCKED if a state high school league would allow competition in a club team IN SEASON with the high school team. In MN you can not play on a club team while in season with your high school team. Middle school sports don't follow the same rules but if you are in 7th or 8th grade competing at the high school level you are bound by these rules. ALL high schools that are part of the state high school league (basically all of them that are eligible to compete in post season tournaments to go to state) are bound by this rule. If a student violates this rule they lose all eligibility to play that sport in high school. We had this happen last year with a basketball player-an 8th grader that was practicing with the high school squad and playing travel ball. Little did the new coach know that since she practiced with the high school she has now lost her high school eligibility since she did both. It's too bad but those are the rules.

edit--to clarify, it would be a club team for the same sport--you can't be in season for soccer and play club soccer at the same time. There is nothing stopping you from playing high school soccer and club volleyball, for example--except I don't know of any coach that would allow that for fear of injury in the opposite sport.

Golfgal I suppose I could be wrong but I do not believe so. I also have a good friend whose son is a jr and plays travel soccer with many of the boys from the private school. She is always stating her frustration about how unfair it is that some of the boys can continue to play on their travel teams at the same time as the high school teams and her son cannot. Maybe there is some distinction that I am not getting. Can I ask you a question off topic? I have read many of your posts about your DD that is a golfer. I have a DD that is a freshman and golfed for the first time this year and did quite well for our school anyways. Do you mind sharing what kind of average your DD has?

Does this Christian school participate in the same state tournaments that your public schools do? That might be the difference.

As for golf, DD usually shoots in the low 80's for 18 holes on average-sometimes lower, sometimes higher. I think her handicap is about 9 or 10 right now.

I know exactly what I am talking about and I would appreciate it if you stop telling me I don't. You simply don't know everything about this subject.

No need to get snarky, many of the posts here were comparing middle school aged sports and club sports and the rules for high school are different in most states.

Have you lived in most states and in been involved in most sports? At least twice on this thread you've tried to correct me and you've been wrong both times.

OP, what is abundantly clear from this thread is that the rules vary greatly depending on where you live and that all sports works differently. I think that you should spend a great deal of time seeking out been there, done that parents in your area that have had children involved in the sport that your child is interested. Coaches can be helpful but parents who have been through what your family is facing are invaluable.

I would. If the academics are comparable. I am a huge supporter of education and one of the rapid "Don't take your kids out of school for Disney" people. However, as important as academics are, so are sports. Playing a team sport, being a member of a team, teaches many life lessons that transcend education. Selflessness, cooperation, discipline, sacrifice, time management. I know so many truly smart, super well educated people who will never be a success as they never learned these skills.

Also, in this age of rabid obesity and financial penalties for people who do not take care of themselves, it is wonderful that your child is developing, at an early age, a routine of exercise. Another very important life skill.

I would absolutely go for it.

And what's to say you are right? I HAVE been there, done that as an athlete, coach and parent.

:rotfl2:

Ok, you win. I'm wrong.

OP, listen to that poster. :cheer2:
