Would you pay $600K for a home with no dining area?

I went to an open house and saw a great apartment (new construction). It had 3 bedrooms, kitchen and living room but no area to put a dining room set. It did have a terrarce deck big enough to throw parties on (20 people). Neighborhood was great too. But why would someone think $600K is worth a home with a tiny living room/dining room space. Maybe I'm old fashioned.

Did it have a breakfast nook or a breakfast bar? If I really liked the house I could easily over look a place for a kitchen table. Op please answer me

I wouldn't pay 600K for a home if it had 10 "dining areas"..:eek::eek::eek:

You must live in an area where prices are high. What was the square footage? Sounds more like a $300, 000 house in my area.

To answer your question...depends. I really could care less if I had a dining room. We rarely use the one we have (maybe 3-4 times a year) and it was the last thing on my list of must-haves in my house. I would prefer a large eat-in area in the kitchen, family area instead. So, if the living area was large enough for a table to seat 6, we'd be fine with that. Our previous house we ate in the kitchen and turned our small dining room into a formal parlor, since we had that type of furnishing for it.

Depends on what you want and would use. I love a dining area, so I would want one.
My new house in AZ has a nook, a breakfast bar and a dining room.....but no living room. The great room is good enough for us in that regard, but some people would want a formal living room too.

We're looking for another home and I've completely ruled out anything that doesn't have a good place for a dining area. I'm not talking about an eat in kitchen, I'm talking about a place to bring out the crystal and 'grandma's' china with linen and sterling. Guess I'm old fashioned too. The huge dining room we have now has an end that doubles as a family room but when Thanksgiving/Christmas and Easter come around-the overstuffed chairs get moved out and the table gets set in all it's glory! I need that.

We have a large eat in kitchen, but no dining room. However, around here you'd definitely expect a dining room for 600k. Does this place have an eat in kitchen, or one of those long dining room/living room type combos?

It doesn't even have a kitchen. It has a kitchenette (room for 1 person to cook) and yes it is a livingroom/dining room combo...but only in theory.

I guess it appeals to some and not to others. My SIL's cousin had a huge house built and requested the kitchen be eliminated from the plans. The builder refused. :confused3

I would have to have a dining room area but thats important to me.

:scared1: No kitchen? I wonder if this person ever thought they might want to sell the house someday.

I don't have to have a formal dining room (in fact I've never had one) but I do need a place to put a good sized table.

Thats exactly what many people said, "what if you want to sell?" She didn't care, still happens to live in the same house many years later, and is as loony as ever.

Where is the home? If it's Manhattan or another expensive area, $600K might not buy a large home.

In South Jersey (where I live), yeah a $600K home should have an eat-in kitchen and formal dining room.

Depends on the person I guess....

When I was house hunting I specifically wanted a house with NO dining room. That was just wasted space to me that I would rather have in my living room. All I needed was the eat-in kitchen & breakfast bar. Any homes that had a dining room were off my list.

I prefer a breakfast bar with a large "nook" next to the kitchen, but no dining room. I use my formal dining room area as a den, but my nook is big enough to sit 10 for dinner.

In my area, 600K is a lot of house (unless it's view property) and I would probably expect a formal dining area or space enough for one. The house you describe sounds like it would be less than 1800 sq ft.

My house is only 1800 sq ft but has a dining area, living area, and family room/kitchen with large nook.

no....for $600K (or even $100K) I would expect to have some sort of spot to eat.

I don't need a formal dining room, but I need a place to sit the family down at a table to eat.

I'm really surprised to hear that in new construction. Maybe they're targeting these apartments to singles or couples who're too busy to cook much? New housing in this area has kitchens so big, you could land an airplane in them!! Even condos/townhomes are going with bigger kitchens. When we built this house, we didn't have kids, so I just envisioned dh and I in the kitchen, so it's smaller than I'd like now.

After kids, we bumped out the back of the house to expand it, and make the eat-in part of it bigger.

I'm assuming you are in NY but I wouldn't buy an apartment anywhere for any price. I want house with a yard in the suburbs where I can get out of the city every day.

Of course if I bought anything for $600K I would not need a kitchen anyway because I would not be able to afford food to cook or store in it.

I don't really care about a dining room so long as there is an eat-in with room for a table (I love farmers tables). OT, my neighbor 4 houses down built the home about 5 years ago without a real kitchen, just a small kitchenette with a casual built-in bar type eating arrangement. She is selling the house for over $500K or is trying to. Thought it was a little odd myself but hey whatever floats her boat.

At $600K for three bedrooms and a terrace, he's not in Manhattan :) Maybe an outer borough. Personally, my dining room feels like wasted space - and we entertain 3 or 4 times a month! just on the deck and in the kitchen and living room - so if square footage went to other purposes, I'd be totally OK with that. Is it a hallway-style kitchen? Can you put a table and two stools in there?
