Would you like something like this as a Christmas gift?

One of the high schools in my area has these as a fund rasier. It is a full year calendar, and every Monday-Friday throughout the entire year, there is a cash prize. On Sunday Holidays, there are cash prizes. It's over $17,000 worth of cash, and if your name gets pulled, you go back in the drawing, so you have as many chances to win throughout the year.

The calendar itself is purse size. It has an address book in the back, and a place to list birthdays and anniversaries. It cost $20. I bought one for myself, and one for my MIL. I filled in her information on the registration card. So, if she wins, she will be directly contacted, not me. The prizes start Jan 1, 2010..the New Year's day prize is $1000!

I thought it would be a cool gift, but now I am second guessing myself. It won't be her main gift, but what would you think about getting a fundraiser for a gift?

I would like a gift like that.

I think that's a nice gift-could you get me one too???? :rotfl2:

If she wins, she's really going to like that gift!

I think it's a wonderful gift, especially for someone who seem to have everything, like my husband's grandma. She's 88 and we never know what to buy her. She'd love that.

Yes, I would like a gift like that. A few years ago, I bought something similar, but instead of cash prizes, it was other things. I ended up winning a pizza from a place not close to me, so i never claimed my prize, but that's okay. I think cash is better!

I'd like one too.. Shall I send you my address? :goodvibes

Great idea..:thumbsup2

I think this is a pretty nice gift! But, I think maybe you should get her something little in addition, if you can!

I actually love the idea of giving the teacher the item you bought as part of the school fundraiser. It just seems right for some reason. :)

As a gift, I guess it is as good as any, but seriously don't use me as a barometer. I have never really been into the whole gift giving/receiving thing. Even as a kid, they didn't excite me. Yeah... I know.... Weird. So, I can't really say if it is a "good" gift or not. I just posted to say I love the idea of using the fundraising item as a gift. LOL!!!

My husband brought one of these home for us on Friday and I told him to pick up a couple more for gifts. Ours are for the local youth hockey association, and it's a minimum of a $30 gift card each day, with many days having a hotel stay as the prize. I think it's a great gift!

I think it is a fine gift idea for someone who has a connection to the school.

I would not be *too* jazzed personally, b/c I never, ever seem to win raffles and don't need a purse calendar, but I wouldn't complain or badmouth the giver if I received it.

I think it's a very thoughtful gift, though it would be wasted on me because I'd never use the calendar. Nice to help out a fundraiser though.:)

IMO it is a neat idea. You are helping out with the fundraiser, and everyone needs a calendar. Plus as said if she wins she will be really happy.

if it were to be the main gift, I would say maybe and depending on the person. Since you said it will not be the main gift, then absolutely! I would love something like that.

:wizard:

ETA: I don't like getting fundraiser gifts that have no use or meaniing for the recipient (for Christmas, a boss once gave us a plastic cup from his sons hockey team that was mostly filled with tissue paper and a tiny bit of candy on top - you can guess where the cup ended up!!!!), but your idea is useful, fun, and potentially rewarding!

I think it's a great idea! You're helping charity and I would be very happy if I received a gift like that and won! :goodvibes

Don't second guess yourself. It's a good way to support the fundraiser. Could your kids give it to her as a gift and you get her a little something else? I find that my MIL always enjoyed the gift more when she knew it was from the kids. I'm assuming that you have kids. If not, sorry ahead of time.

It wouldn't thrill me. I don't want to carry around a purse-sized calendar, and I want a calendar at home that is fairly large.

The lottery aspect of it to me is not gift-like at all. I don't do fundraisers of any sort (I give a direct contribution) and I don't buy lottery tickets. Since your chances of winning are pretty small overall, there's no real gift value in that aspect of it.

My vote would be no... And this is why: As a high-schooler in the 80s, my two brothers and I had to sell these types of calendars as a fundraiser. My parents refused to let us sell to our family and friends (because they were $25 each) and just purchased them for us.

Over the years they purchased 48 of these calendars. And in all that time they never won anything- not once. I am not a fan of these types of calendars.

I think this is a very nice gift, personally; I, for one, get a LOT of use out of pocket-calendars! Not going to spend a mint on a Palm Pilot thing when I already lug around a cellphone, and adding stuff into the cellphone is more work than just whipping out my book and pencil and scribbling a note :thumbsup2

So, yeah, good gift methinks!
