Would you let your 9 year old ride the New York subway alone?

Would you allow your child to ride the NY City subway alone?

  • Yes. The odds of something going wrong are too low to be worried about.

  • No. I think it's too dangerous.

I am not resentful about "cautious" parents. Why should I be? I don't care how they raise their kids. I just think they are doing a disservice to their children.
With us it depends on the particular instance. The older they get, the more wiggle room they get. Right now DS is with friends at Busch Gardens. A couple years ago, that would have been a...No, you're absolutely not going without a parent along. Now they go. Still, he has much of the riot act repeated to him with each trip. The main one at this age...behave yourselves. I don't want any calls from BG or the police telling me about a problem.

"She says she didn't give him a cell phone because she didn't want the phone to get lost. If my kid couldn't be trusted to hang onto a cell phone, are they really ready to travel on the subway alone?"

That's right! As I was reading that earlier my thought was...she's worried about a cell phone being lost but is okay with a kid going alone? I'd be more concerned about the kid!

P.S. I have managed to misplace my phone numerous times. DS always knows where his is. :)

Are you talking about the Dinkins years? Those weren't our best, I agree.

Come try it out again - I think you'd be surprised at how nice it is here.
This is more the Beame and Koch time period. Thanks to the New Yorkers and NYC visitors for the updates! I just can't imagine NYC being a safe place. Maybe it's time for a visit. :teeth:

I've never been to New York, but I'm from New Orleans, a very dangerous place. Everywhere seems safer to me than New Orleans. NY is probably not that bad.

Guliani really cleaned up the city when he took over. It's so much better then it was 20 years ago.
