Would you lend your shoppers card to someone in line?

We went away for the weekend. We stopped for a few items for the car ride home. We did not have a store card as that chain of grocery stores is not in our area.

The cashier would not run one through and the woman in front of us was almost "nasty" sounding and told us "NO".

I always offer my card when I see someone without it and cashiers also offer.

So my question is - Do you or would you let someone use your card for the discount and what state do you live in?

I live in Washington state and shop at Safeway primarily. I've never had the opportunity to do it, but would if it came up. It would benefit the customer and would benefit me since we get points towards a discount on gas!

This is how I feel also. Even if there isn't rewards at the time, everyone should be able to benefit from the discount.

It just really made me wonder why she was so upset that I asked to use hers. That is why I asked what state people were in. Maybe some places it is frowned upon.

I guess I would, although I have never, ever been asked and honestly would be taken a little aback if someone requested it. (I wouldn't think of being rude though.) It's possible that the cashier's store had a policy NOT allowing them to use a generic card for "non-members". Personally I dislike stores that require membership cards for discount pricing. I don't do my regular shopping at any store that does so.

Sure, why not? But, why not just sign up for a card? It usually only takes a couple minutes.

I shop at Von's/Safeway and I would have no problem giving my card to someone but I have never had to because there have been many times when I've been in line and the person in front of me doesn't have a card and the cashier will swipe a new one for them right on the spot.

I've let someone use mine before and I'd do it again if it ever came up because it's a win/win situation. Our grocery store has a really good fuel perks program linked to the discount card so it would earn me extra money off gas and save the other person a few bucks on whatever they bought.

Sure, why not? But, why not just sign up for a card? It usually only takes a couple minutes.

We were in another state in a store I would probably never shop in again. The savings was only 50 cents as I was just getting some licorice for the ride home. If I thought I would use it again, I would have. Plus it was a quick stop as we wanted to get home.

I shop at safeway, I have not had an opportunity to do it. I wouldn't mind. I should look at their policy and see if they allow it.

I would probably offer on my own if I saw somebody needed a discount.

However, I would NEVER be so presumptuous to ask a stranger in line to use their card, especially for 50 cents. That just seems really weird.

If somebody asked me to use my card, I would be taken aback, be a bit shocked and befuddled that somebody wanted my card and would probably answer the same as the lady in the OP.

See I don't understand how this would be rude. I am just being honest and I said to the woman, "Excuse me Ma'am, I am sorry, we are not from this area, would you mind if I used your card for my licorice the sale requires the card?" Now she was not leaving and was still going through her purse and re-arranging items in her cart.

I guess since here they cashiers will even run a card for you and I have been asked a lot to use mine I just find it more normal. For a while the only way to get the sale price on Milk was to use the card. My card is on my key chain. Many days my husband would be driving and I would run in the store never thinking that the card was on the keys in the car.

Nope. I don't offer the use of my card. The discount cards are given for signing up according to the store's policy. It isn't my decision to make for them by lending out my card. If the store wants to swipe a generic one for em great. But again that is their decision, not mine.

Why? IT is a plastic card that is scanned, they aren't asking for your credit card why would you be taken aback? That is just a bizzare reaction. I have been asked a few times in CVS or rite aid, the cashier usually asks and I have no problem with it.

Absolutely NOT. If you asked and I let you use my card my husband would be FIRED as our card is an associate card. I don't think my husbands 42 years with his company is worth you saving 50 cents instead of you taking the 30 seconds to fill out the info for a card.

You would probably think I was nasty too. You have no idea if she had an associates card or not and had been asked multiple times. It does get old to be asked multiple times.

If OP stated that she wasn't from the area how would she know that the person ahead of her got employee perks on that card. And as for saying no because of the perks one doesn't have to be nasty about it. "I'm sorry this is an employee card and it's against the rules."

I also said I would be taken aback, only because it has never happened to me before and I wouldn't think of asking someone else myself. Not such a bizarre reaction really. (Lots of others like me out there that don't think too quick on our feet I guess. )

You probably haven't read the TOS for you shoppers card. Maybe look at and read all 42 pages of the one you use and you will understand why she was taken aback at you question.

I went and read the FAQ and terms for the card I used the most. You can share it. Like I said before we could enter our phone number in the keypad, the cashier would run a store card through for you and you would get the discount.

The cards are free here and maybe it is regional but asking and or offering happens often. I don't associate a free shoppers card that has no personal information on the receipt to be equal to someone's lipstick.

Maybe there is a totally different type of card in other states. Ours are not associate cards. They are free shoppers cards that offer cents off items each week. Some stores offer credits towards gas, etc. Or maybe dish towels at a discount. But they are not associate cards. Even when I worked at the grocery store you received the same shoppers card and it did not offer anything special. Your store discount was given with your employee number.

So I am really thinking this is a regional thing.
