Would you lend your shoppers card to someone in line?

What if the person did not live near it then it would be pointless for them to sign up for the card

I shop safeway in Northern Ca, and we went to Las Vegas and found out that Safeway and Vons were linked and used my card. If I traveled to some destination a lot I might try to sign up. It can't hurt.

I have asked and been asked and have offered! We visit our inlaws in another state and I don't have cards to all those stores and have no qualms to ask someone, never had anyone say no before. I have offered mine whenever I see someone without one.

most of our stores here have store cards that they will use if you ask. I probably would have said something snippy to the lady that was nasty tho. how stupid to be so unfriendly. And if her husband was an employee I doubt the store would have liked her being so nasty to a customer. uncalled for.

I have let others used my card, and I have used others when I forgot mine or was shopping at a store at which I did not have their card.

I can't even believe how shocked some people are about this. Common courtesy. And obviously the OP was not talking about employee cards. Come on.

I would have no problem sharing my card, and have done so in the past, but I offered. No one had asked me to use my card for their purchase. I would never ask someone else if I could use their card because I think that would be presumptuous of me, however, I would use it if they offered, and would appreciate it.

But, you learn something new every day. Now, I won't be so surprised if someone asks me. :)

At my grocery store, the cashiers just scan the store card without asking if you have your own. :lmao:

See I just think asking a total stranger in line a question like that as just way to personal. Would you ask to use a lipstick in her purse because you wanted to try the color and see if it looked good on you.

You probably haven't read the TOS for you shoppers card. Maybe look at and read all 42 pages of the one you use and you will understand why she was taken aback at you question.

I live in Washington state and work in Oregon and it would be considered a presumptuous question where I shop even for people who do not have an associates card.

Oh please, asking someone to use the plastic shoppers card is not even in the same universe as asking for a lipstick.

Good grief, your seem to be taking this way too personally. It's not lipstick or a debit card. It's a discount card that stores actually use to track consumer spending habits. Yes, you have an employee discount card linked to yours but that's a special situation.

Yep, this.

Yes I am taking this seriously. The OP wanted to know if this was common. I am stating from my experience. She has no idea if she was refused because the person she asked had a card like ours or not. Maybe she did.

I have seen people fired on the spot for allowing others to use their card. And this is with a company that is in all states. The one time I was asked I was in Ohio, the person in front of me saw my card and asked to borrow it. I said absolutely not and left it at that. She was a bit huffy but paid her bill and walked off. After I paid the cashier said to me, "you did the right thing, she is our loss prevention officer and if you had let her use your card you would have been fired."

She asked for opinions and I gave mine. Most people take their livelihood very personal.

I see the line in the grocery store as a place to get out of as soon as possible. Leave me alone and check me out quickly. My DH on the other hand will chat up whoever is in line with him and have their life history in under 5 minutes. :confused3

I have offered my card before to people without one and would have given the OP mine to use. Why not? There is no personal information on the receipt and it's definitely not a personal item like a lipstick. Regarding the employee card, a simple "I'm sorry, this is an employee card and I can't let anyone else use it" is polite and takes maybe 5 seconds to state.

Your experience is skewed because of your situation which is not common, an opinion is one thing but your examples are over the top dramatic and your anger shines through your post.

Many of the cards give a small rebate of some sort after so many dollars spent. If someone asked to use my card, I'd let them regardless of the rebate, but there is the added benefit of a few more points towards the rebate so win-win.

I do think some people might feel that the card is their reward for being a regular shopper and an out-of-state customer shouldn't get the reward since they aren't regular. I don't agree with that attitude. In fact I find it silly, but I know there are people who think that way, and the OP may have met one of them that day.

Yes, of course I would. The cashiers know me by name at my regular grocery store and if someone is buying something on sale and doesn't have a card, will often ask me themselves if they can swipe my card. It helps the other person and I get points toward fuel. Win/win. I live in Michigan.

Oh, and when I travel, 99% of the time, the cashier will ask another shopper or will run a store card when I reply that I don't have the card because I'm just visiting.

Who knew some people get their panties in a bunch over this? But, after years of reading here, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. :rotfl2:

Most people are NOT asking to use your employee discount card nor is it the same as asking for a lipstick from your purse. There's a nice way to explain that your card is different and as an employee of the company or the spouse of one, it seems like it would behoove you to be polite to others in line.

I've only ever been asked once for someone to use my card and that was on a self-checkout line. I had no problem with it. Also, anything bought at this store on my card goes towards a gas discount (Giant). So I would be actually happy to use my card :) The two stores where I shop - Giant and ShopRite - don't have "store cards" to use. You need your own card. I live in Maryland.

Also, I feel like I would never ask someone to use their card. :confused3 If I really need the discount I would take the 5 minutes and open up a new card. I shop at one store in NY once a year and I have a card for that store.

Bingo.

It's not just her either. I shouldn't be surprised but here we have yet another thread where people get all snotty and ridiculous over something that really isn't a big deal.
If you don't want to help someone and let them borrow your card, don't. There's no need for the great offense and outrage that is coming off in some of these posts.

If someone asked if they could use my card, I would let them. I would be a little surprised to be asked, not in a bad way, but in a "This never happened before" way. I would never ask someone to use their card. A couple of times the cashier scanned a card for me, others I just went without the sale price or got my own card if it was in a new store. Although, I wouldn't go to any trouble to save 50 cents.

How would YOU have been fired? Maybe the cashier, but a simple "I'm not allowed to use other's cards."

Honestly, what we're you going to save on some snacks, a dollar? If you had asked me I would have given you a weird look but if the cashier said it was ok I'd probably do it. I would NEVER ask another shopper to use their card. I think asking a stranger for something like this is very presumptuous. It isn't life or death. Just suck it up and pay full price or do without.

There is actually someone from around me that some how has the same Kroger card as i do. I track my points and I have noticed that I accumulate big points on days I know for a fact I don't go to Kroger! I never buy a bill of groceries there so I know they aren't my points. At first I let the points sit there since they aren't mine but they never use them for gas discounts so I do. I even get coupons in the mail for stuff I know I never buy!

I have no idea how this happened but it's been going on for a year or so now. Apparently they don't have a problem with it because they haven't gotten a new card.

I would probably offer on my own if I saw somebody needed a discount.

However, I would NEVER be so presumptuous to ask a stranger in line to use their card, especially for 50 cents. That just seems really weird.

If somebody asked me to use my card, I would be taken aback, be a bit shocked and befuddled that somebody wanted my card and would probably answer the same as the lady in the OP.

I think this is how I feel.
