Would you go?

We are supposed to go to a birthday party for our 1 yo nephew tonight. They live 50 miles away and it is snowing. I already spent over an hour shoveling my driveway and didn't even get to the part where the snowplow threw all of that yucky heavy snow up on it. The whole rest of the driveway is already covered again since I stopped shoveling an hour or so ago.

DH will be working late tonight so I would be taking the three kids by myself and driving all the way from one side of Mpls to the other in rush hour traffic as the party starts at 6:00.

I do not want to drive down there in this. In normal weather on a weekend it takes an hour to get there and tonight it is bound to take at least two hours and then I still have to drive home. But, am I being a baby or a flake by not going? I would call of course and think that if a family member called me and said they were not coming because of these reasons I would totally understand, but not too sure I will get understanding coming back my way.

So, would you go? Why or why not?

I would definitely call them to inform them that you'll not be able to make it, but under no circumstances would I risk my families lives to go to a birthday party.

Nope, I wouldn't go either. And no one should give you flack for it.

I wouldn't go but only 3 inches of snow in the D.C. area is crippling!!! Not sure how you folks in Minnesota view snow. Is the amount/type of snow you are getting right now considered "nothing"? If it is considered substantial for your area, no way, I wouldn't go.

Poor little nephew though!! Tell him Happy Birthday from one December 30th baby (that's me) to another!! :teeth: It sucks having a winter birthday.

It is raining here on top of the slushy snow and if it goes below freezing tonight the roads are going to be a NIGHTMARE! I already told DH not to come home tonight if it got close to freezing (he is up in the cities with DS10-they went to a Timberwolves game). I wouldn't go to the party. Getting there might be ok but when traffic dies down and the roads start to glaze over you have black ice and NASTY roads. Stay home.

I wouldn't go and I bet the birthday boy doesn't even notice. ;)

I don't even think 1 year olds need birthday parties, but after 4 kids, I'm a little birthday partied out. :flower:

I guess it would depend. We live in VT and have canceled plans before because of the weather. But we live in VT and can't stay inside all winter, so we sometimes travel when the roads are not at their finest.

How are the road crews over there? Do you think they have been able to keep up with the roads? Is is supposed to continue snowing through the evening? If you left now, would you be able to avoid the rush hour issues?

Bottom line is, though, don't go if you feel it will put your family in danger. It is not worth it.

DH just called and the friends he is staying with up there called him and said the roads in the Bloomington/Apple Valley area are really slick and that he might want to stay another night so he is going to stay in there until tomorrow. I would stay home from the party, too.

I agree with the others. Stay home and stay warm. Why risk a possible accident.

golfgal--thanks for the update! That is also a really good point about getting home. DH will be working tonight until like 10:00 so while his drive home may be slippery, at least it won't be slippery in rush hour.

I feel so much better and so much not like a wimp now.

The road crews are out and the main roads are cleared, but I looked at the road camera things on one of the news websites and the roads are all really wet. That is roadspray is going to make travel at rush hour a nightmare. I would say we have a more than "nothing" for sure, but not a blizzard.

Still driving with my kids without DH for that long just does not feel like a good gamble. And I am pretty sure the little dude will not notice our absence!

I can't imagine anyone would expect you to make the trip in bad weather. But this is coming from a South Carolinian; if it snows here, we don't even drive to the mailbox. :teeth:

Oh man, you guys! It was actually starting to look better here for a bit--though now it is snowing again--and I was feeling a little guilty. (On a side note, it is weird because if it were my sisters, I would not have hesitated to say we were not coming and wouldn't give it a second thought, but when it is DHs family I feel guilty....hmmm food for analyzing there, but anyway.) I decided to check the traffic cams again, and UGH! I am so glad I decided not to go. We would have had to leave by now for sure and check out some of these cameras

Look at any along either Interstate 94 or 494 from the northwest. I would have had to travel along one of those roads. No way!! Thanks for helping with my decision. THe kids and I will be staying home and making homemade pizza tonight!
