Usually I meet the person in a public place so they don't have my cell # or address. I can understand why someone would want a number since people stand people up so much....but a potential buyer wants it. I may just tell her she can email me since I always have my phone with me.

I'm always more comfortable buying or selling on Craigslist when I have a phone number. Rules out a lot of the fraudulent ads.

I have a phone number through google voice that I use for things like that. Not the reson I originally signed up for one but its useful for not giving out my other info. Can use it for texting too.

I think a phone number is legit.

For me, it would be my landline. I don't give out my cell phone number to anyone. There are only 5 in the world that have my cell phone number, my 2 kids, my DW, my mom and my MIL. My cell phone is my number for when people absolutely have to get ahold of me immediately.

Once I've emailed back and forth with a seller, I'm fine giving them my cell number. If they are really a criminal...what are they going to do with your cell number anyway???

Then again, I am always carrying my concealed weapon on me when I do a Craigslist buy/sell, so I usually feel pretty secure. I also just buy kids/baby stuff right now, and it's pretty easy to tell if the woman is a real mom after I talk to her.

Having a number for a seller or buyer can help in instances where you are running late or can't locate one another at the specified meeting place.

I would think giving out a cell phone # is reasonable. I've made a few purchases on CL and each time I've called the person, set up meeting details and once the purchase was done the phone # is deleted.

I've also done the opposite and sold a few things on CL and always list my cell # .... I also put a message on the ad that if I don't answer it is best to Text Message me.

I ENTHUSIASTICALLY second this idea. A Google Voice number gives you essentially complete privacy on the inbound side. You configure your GV number to forward inbound calls to whatever number *you* specify, and the caller has absolutely no idea who/where/how the call is being answered.

I sell quite a bit on craigslist and unless I have a phone number I go to next person. I have had way too many no shows.

I am trying to sell my car through craigslist. When someone contacted me I asked for their phone number so in case there is a problem and I couldn't show, I could call them. It was also for my security. I gave the phone number to my father so in case I disappeared, he would have something to give cops. I hate craigslist because there are so much dishonesty out there.

If I was a buyer I wouldn't bother putting in the effort to go meet with someone if they didn't give me a cell phone number. I know there can be some dishonesty of Craigslist but there isn't much the person can do with a phone number anyways.

i sold my car last year and had it on craigslist. i gave a few people my number after emailing b/c the only ones who actually wanted to talk on the phone were serious buyers, not spammers. i ended up selling it to a guy two blocks away, i put a sign in the window for sale, with my number, and they bought it two days after they called me.

i understand meeting in public but like other said if you are concerned figure out a way to give a concealed number. if someone told me i cant have a phone number i might take that as a bad sign.

I ended up giving out a google voice number. I can understand why they wanted it. I'm just hesitant to give out a number.

I cannot understand at all hesitating to give your cell phone number. If a seller wouldn't give me a phone number, I would suspect a scam and I would not deal with you.

If your buyer has your name, he or she can get your address, landline number and all sorts of info very easily. You might as well give your cell number.

I don't understand saying 'they can get this info so you might as well give them that info."

There are people out there with the ability to 'clone' a cell phone. Additionally, people tend to assume everyone has unlimited texts and I do not.

My point is that once someone has your name, they can get personal information about you, so not giving your phone number is not protecting your privacy.

You might want to look into how cell phones are cloned. You don't do it by getting someone's phone number.

I always give out my number. As a matter of fact, I specifically state in my ad I only respond to phone calls. This pretty much eliminates all the tire kickers and the other riff raff emailing you in search of a freebee. The only people who are going to call you are those who are really interested.

As someone who doesn't have a smartphone I always ask for a phone number and give mine out so if something comes up I can call to let them know if I am going to be late or need to reschedule. No one likes a no show and without a way to get ahold of you then that may happen.

Google voice is the way to go! Works really well, they can leave you messages which you can check online. They have an app if you have a smartphone, and the best part - it's free! You pick a number using your area code so folks who call locally don't get charged extra.
