The one thing my 13 year old DD wants for Christmas more than anything is - her nails done. Now, I'm willing to do it, but I need some nail info. I have NEVER had my nails done, and you can tell just by looking at them, but she's definitely going to be more high maintenance than I ever was.

For those of you with nail salon experience, what exactly will they do to her nails, and do you think it's OK to let a 13 year old get them done?

Well I just had my 11yo dds mustache waxed (first time, she needed it poor thing) so nails would be a piece of cake.

In fact THAT sounds like a GREAT gift...THANKS!!!!

Go for it! I wouldn't get her fake nails but a manicure would be fine.

Absolutely. DD just turned 13 and has had her nails done twice. Once it was with a group at a birthday party, the next time using her own money and going with a friend. Polish only, nothing that could harm her own nails at all. DD has given gift certificates for manicures as birthday gifts.

I would get her a manicure, but I wouldn't do the acrylic thing. They are expensive to maintain, ($15-20 every 2 weeks), and they aren't the greatest for your nails. Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience. I just had to have mine removed because of infection in the nailbed. Without getting too graphic, let's just say, my nails are in horrible shape, and I am thanking the Lord for cold weather and the fact that I can wear gloves a LOT! The sad thing is that I had them for quite a while with no problems. Oh well, you can just call me "stubby" for awhile!

Definately! DD has been getting manicures and pedicures since she was 6.5 I won't allow any fake nails though!

My DD(10) has gotten an manicure as part of her birthday gift for 3 years running (starting at age 7). This is the day where I take her to the salon I go to (as opposed to Fantastic Sam's or something) and she gets her hair washed in the sink, trimmed and styled. This is followed by a manicure where they trim and shape the nails and paint them with her choice of polish. One year they even air brushed a couple of designs on them for her birthday. She loves this and it makes her feel very "grown up".

I agree with the others a manicure would be great, but I wouldnt be to sure about fake nails.
I recently got my niece a facial for her 13th bday(thanks to responses on these boards) and she loved it!

I'm no help, because the one and only time I ever stepped into a nail salon was before my wedding!

Mystery Machine, I just took DD 11 to a dermatologist to get her synophrys (the hair between her eyebrows, also known as a "unibrow") lasered. (She gets it from her dad.) I was going to wait, but one night I found her in the bathroom trying to cut it off with a pair of scissors! Seems some of the boys in her class were teasing her -- 6th grade boys can be really cruel!

I would absolutely NOT do this...manicure-ok, acrylics, no. I have had them in the past and if one of them gets 'bent', it takes the whole real nail with it. Very, very painful...whereas a real nail would just break off at the quick, not way down in the bed.

I just let dd-13 also- have acrylics for the halloween dance...she had pulled them off within a week and said never again. And they make the real nail very nutrition/air starved and it is like tissue paper underneath the fakes.
