Would you "flock" somebody or get "flocked" as a fundraiser ?

Our youth organization is brainstoring a few fundraisers.

One of the ideas that has come up several times, is getting flocked.

It's a gag, totally humerous and nothing with ill intentions.

The person getting flocked has their yard filled with those plastic yard flamingos for a set period of time. Then the group come back and removes them. Usually 24-48 hours later.

Usually it's done for something like a birthday, a celebration, or just as a plain good old laugh.

The flock can range in size Small having 10 birds, Med having 20 birds and Large flock being 30 birds.

It comes with a door hanger sign stating they have been flocked by XYZ, We've seen some varations as far as removal, such as call 1234567 to have them removed early for a donation of X, or anti-flocking insurance for X, or to flock the person back for X.

I personally saw this several times when living in Florida. It was always very funny to drive by and see somebody had been flocked.

Open to positive suggestions about this idea. Price points ?

personally, I'd rather the kids rake my leaves or mow my grass. wash my windows????

I really wouldn't pay for anti-flocking insurance. If I woke up to 30 plastic flamingos in my yard I'd probably pitch them into a cardboard box and set them under a tree waiting for you to come and get them.

Flocking is huge in my town. The school booster club organizes it and you can make the appointment online. I flocked my DGD after it was clear that she was enjoying all of the pink flamingos all over town.

I think that you need to know your community to know if this would be a viable fundraiser. I imagine it is fairly well received in my community because it is repeated on a yearly basis.

Ours is $25 and there is an option to pay to have it moved to someone else's house. There is a yard sign and the flock is in the front yard. Nothing in doors or property.

It is pretty popular around here, where people pay to have other people's yards flocked. It is all in good fun, and I think it give teens a way to be their naturally mischevious selves without doing any real damage.

The rule.

No "positive suggestion" here. No way I'm getting extortioned into a "donation" to have people clean up their own mess, nor would I want a bunch of people trespassing on my property like that. I'd be annoyed as all get-out and those things would end up in the dumpster.

Its popular here too. The groups that have done this have tried washing cars, raking leaves, etc. Flocking always makes more money. ?

Not my idea of fun, nor would I pay to have them removed. Unattractive garden statuary is one of my pet peeves. Next incidence of garden gnomes in my neighbourhood, and I so will install a "life-size" version of Michelangelo's David with full frontal equipment on my front lawn.
Take that, all you gnomes, flamingos, and other plastic junk!

Love it! We did it for my dad for his 50th! It was great! 50 pink flamingoes in the deep January snow!

I would pay for it...

My dd's school does this. It benefits the sophomore class toward their "senior celebration". They put it out that morning and take them up in the evening.

It is 25.00.

They also sell "Flamingo Insurance" for 25.00. So no "flocks" will appear in your yard during the school yr.:rotfl:

It's been done here with mild success but not enough that it was chosen to be repeated each year.

Contrary to PP's experience, car washes are a huge $ maker in town. Maybe it's because there isn't one in town or maybe it's because we're by the ocean and those darn seagulls are constantly decorating our car.;):confused3

DS's scout troop just did a ton of fundraising over the last couple years to send 16 boys to Jamboree. Our biggest $ makers for the time invested in them were:
1) Car washes
2) Election day bake sales (believe it or not); it's a small town and they just let the boys set up a table inside near the polls
3) Pumpkin sale in the fall (there isn't really anywhere in town to buy your pumpkins)

The drama club does a rake in take in the fall that is quite successful

Flocking is not popular around here. a group of friends did it for a woman's b-day and she was not happy. She usually has a fun sense of humor but her home and yard were her pride and joy.

Other funky ideas I've seen would be "kidnapping" dignitaries and putting them in a fake jail til their friends posted "bail." I'd just as soon they left the politicians in there.

A college fund-raiser included a pie-toss. The highest bidder got to throw a cream pie at someone. I bid on the opportunity to throw a pie at my boss, and the college kids were so shocked that a loyal(?) employee would do that, they stopped the bidding at that point and let me "have at it." The boss was a good sport, and I found it surprisingly therapeutic.

Our local boy scout troop places flags in subscribers' yards for patriotic holidays -- I think it's 6-8 times a year and $30? per subscriber. When they had several guys raising funds for jamboree they asked for donations for a huge yard sale (held in a school parking lot.) the guys and their leaders picked up large items, and they netted mega bucks. IIRC they earned about $8000.

Wow, there are some pretty uptight posters on this thread. They're plastic birds in your yard. I think it sounds like fun and sure beats the kids panhandling outside the grocery store.

Op, I do think it's a fundraiser that should be carefully supervised by adults to ensure the kids don't get overly enthusiastic.

I would participate, but in my neighborhood the teens/club would constantly be replacing those flamingoes. For awhile, getting chalked was very popular. Our house was chalked a few times by my son's friends. I got a kick out of seeing it.

Adults do it at our school IIRC. It is a PTO fundraiser.

A couple of groups here do that or the kidnapping. I much prefer plastic birds because it doesn't interrupt my day:).

I wouldn't do it to someone known to be uptight about their yard, of course.

Extortion? I suspect that they'd come get them regardless because there is a schedule. Some people are scary!

Op, maybe if they left a box for the grumpy people.
