I'm gonna use a few asterisks here, to protect the innocent and unknowing.

Temple University football won a game today. First game in ages that they have won, I believe. The name of the head coach is Al Golden.

At the end of the game the kids threw gatorade on the coach ( as seen on TV highlights )..... The TV sports anchor said the following ( or REAL CLOSE ).

"Look at all those guys. They're giving the coach a ****** shower"!

And he said it in such a way that you knew that he knew EXACTLY what he was saying.

Offensive to YOU?

EDIT: I am assuming if you vote yes or no, that you know what the asterisks mean.

Not at all. It's a tasteless pun, but not offensive to me.

The funny thing is, if any children actually know what that means you really aren't protecting the innocent by using astericks. If they don't know, it would just go over their heads.

That must have been the 3 that voted they didn't know what it means. :teeth:

I'm with you on this one. I don't find it offensive, but I do think it's a bad choice of words.

It's foul humor, neither funny nor tasteful, and certainly not dignified.

True, but I'm betting there are some adults here who don't know what it means, too. Either way, TOTALLY inappropriate, IMO, for a TV anchor to say during a dinner time newscast.

But some kids might know enough to google it.

I wish I had a camera to watch half of the DIS popluation open a new window to google!

I can't say that I know what word goes where the stars do. So I have no idea if it is offensive or not.

ETA: Sports anchors and reporters do not report in the same way as the news anchors do--and they will have different ways to report sports news. I don't hold them to the same standards as the regular anchors/reporters...though they should use some decorum in the word usage and not use offending euphamisms..not that I know what the euphamism is.

Yes, it is inappropriate, but that isn't what you asked. You asked if we thought it was offensive. I find some things inappropriate, but am not necessarily offended by them, kwim?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking the f bomb, but instead of "ing" at the end, it's "in" at the end.

Trust me, you don't want to know. I'm so glad someone else doesn't!!! I just heard it not a year or so ago and had to find out what it meant. :faint: Of course, I hadn't heard the F word until 7th grade and didn't get an explanation until 8th.

No, it doesn't offend me. Yes, I think it is inappropriate.

OK. Agreed.
I happen to find it offensive in the context of where it was presented. Among friends, that would be OK to say.

To an above poster.... I work in TV. I am GREAT friends with LOTS of sports guys, both in my station, and outside my station. I spoke with our guy who did the sports tonight. His opinion was that had he said it, and the station got any backlash, he would probably have had a short, quiet, suspension.

And, having worked in TV for 15+ years, trust me.... someone at the station fielded calls about this, probably more than one.... maybe way more than one. We get calls when an anchor has a slip of the tongue. An honest mistake. This was no mistake.

I am not a prude at all. But is that what I want my 4 year old son watching tv with Dad repeating? No way!!! Especially since he still repeats anything that he gets any kind of reaction from! ;)

Still haven't a clue.

To Papa Deuce--I simply stated in response to someone else that sportscasters have a different way of reporting than regular broadcasters--even those covering an entertainment piece. "Dignified" reporting and sportscasting just don't go together. They are usually more hip in how they speak-to make it all sound cool and go by really quickly so that they can cover as much as they can. Afterall--spouting off boring sports score after sports score would be boring, dontcha think?

I may not have had the chance to be in the business as long as you have--but I'm not all that young in that regard...Roughly only 5 years off your 15 years in the biz.

In any case--obviously if they do say something inappropriate, something should be done. I in no way excused what was said as I have no idea what was said b/c of the ***'s.

You can PM me what was said so that I can better formulate my opinion. But without knowing what they said--what I am stating is all general based on my college experience with the professors, my professional experience...and my years in watching news programs ever since. Stylistically sportscasting is a different kind of reporting. As long as profanity and sexist remarks stay out...most anything is possible fair game as long as it is for the most part it is respectful and appropriate to the video being shown.

Well, someone PM'd me what it meant and I found the F bomb to be much worse.

I'm not offended. It's just juvenile. Something I would expect from an sex obsessed 15 year old boy, not a man.

Had I watched the broadcast, I wouldn't have thougt anything of it. Most likely he did it on purpose--but I do wonder how many viewers would catch the pun.

It would have gone over my head--and still did even when the word was told to me...I had to continue reading to know what it meant.

There are lots of perversions of language out there--doesn't necessarily mean that it is intended that way when someone presents it.

In fact--I tried to google something on the DIS--however, the format I used yielded something ENTIRELY not what people were talking about on the DIS.

It happens--could he have had a pregnant pause on purpose to convey the euphamism--did he have it b/c the video wasn't quite caught up to where he was in the script, I have no idea.

If intended that way--was it inappropriate?...sure. Was it offensive? I guess that is up to your viewers to decide.

ETA: OMG I am soo slow on the puns...missed the part about the coach--it would be very hard to PROVE that he did anything wrong IMHO.

there was a skit somewhere at some time...don't recall..but it was quite funny--about how you can sleaze up just about anything by how you say it...did he have smariness in his voice--perhaps...but I could see how he and the station could easily defend themselves.

I can tell you this: It happened while we were all at lunch. Probably 12 of us. When he said it EVERYBODY had something to say or a reaction. Some laughed, some seemed surprised, one woman just looked very angry and left the lunch room about 30 seconds after it happened.

I think ALL of us caught it immediately, but as I always say, my coworkers and I are an "earthy" bunch. If people only knew what goes on.... :teeth:

Color me stupid, I just don't get why this is so upsetting. I doubt it was meant literally anyway.

Nope, me neither. Not even a little bit. I don't even understand why it wasn't just printed with letters rather than the *s.

Well, for one reason, I didn't want people who didn't know what it was, to google it. For another, gotta keep the mods happy! :teeth:

I will say, that 2 people PM'd me ( well 4 total ) who didn't have a full understanding of the term. They had it close, but maybe did not get the whole picture.

I don't think I changed anybody's mind, though. ;)
