Would you feel safe taking uber or lyft late at night in Orlando?

I need some opinions please! The first time we (2 adult women) would need a ride is from MCO after a late flight (10:45 PM) to an offsite hotel in the Disney area. The second time is from Universal Citywalk back to the Disney area hotel and that would probably be around 1:30 or 2 in the morning.

We haven't made definite plans yet and I realized this is my sticking point! This trip would be to attend the Universal Informer meetup on a Saturday night that lasts until 1:30 AM and the reason I'm thinking about a Disney area hotel is because we want to go to Epcot the next day and Disney Springs on Monday before our evening flight home.

Thanks!

I would feel safe, especially with another person with me. You have the option in the app to share your route with someone who isn’t with you, so they can see where you are on your route at all times, as an added layer of safety.

I always have the driver drop me off at the resort lobby, never directly at/ near my room. Again, I feel completely safe but it’s just another layer of safety.

I’ve used Uber/lyft alone around Orlando and felt perfectly safe. I knew what car and driver were coming and usually they stuck their head out of the window and said “are you SG131?” So I knew it was my driver. With two people you definitely should be fine. You may get a driver that doesn’t speak much English but that’s about it. I went to the last informer event and there was a bit of a wait to get a ride afterwards. I was at the double tree right down the street though so I decided to just walk.

Ive taken them alone at night with no problems. I just always make sure I check the make/model of the car/license plate/name of driver. I keep my phone out just in case I need it but I have never had any problems, they just take me from point A to point B.

I'm in the minority here as I don't use Uber or Lyft ( although I grew up in a time when our parents told us to never get in a car with strangers... )

BUT, I would order a Minnie Van which is supported by Lyft ( I think ) - the difference is the driver's are Disney Cast Members. ( Or at least they were when it 1st started - I'm sure someone can confirm for you ).

Minnie Van will pick up from the airport but not to drop off at an offsite hotel. Also will not, as far as i know, pick up from Universal. OP would be better off with a cab or Mears Shuttle or town car - if they opted not to use rideshare.

I have used rideshare in Orlando many times, both with DGD and myself, with me, DD and DGD and with me and a friend. I had no qualms about it. And I have no experience outside of Orlando using such things. I live in a small town and the suburbs and never use taxis or rideshare around here. I doesn't bother me at all there.

Another safety measure is to ask the driver what YOUR name is. A legitimate driver will have that information.

You can say, “Who are you picking up?”

A Minnie van is not an option in this case.

This is a MUST do. You should never, ever get in any rideshare without doing this. No matter who, where or when you are riding, be you male, female, alone, etc

That is the most important thing. Check out the car to make sure it is the expected car (I can’t recall I found FL requires front license plates, but if not, look at the back), and do NOT offer your name.

CMs are still strangers. As are DME drivers, airport shuttle drivers, cab drivers, etc. Pilots...

Just FYI, the BEST practice is for the driver to ask the rider what their name is -- AND for the rider to ask the driver what their name is.

Many drivers will cancel riders who decline to provide their names.

Why?

If I pull up and ask, "Are you AngiTN?' she may not even hear me (especially if we're at a crowded venue like a park closing, airport, etc) -- or may not understand what I asked. So she may just say yes and get in the car. That's actually pretty common -- I've had several of the WRONG passengers get in the car and then have to get out again.

Same thing with a rider asking me, "Are you Jim?" Sure, I can be Jim...or Pablo...or anybody you want me to be... Think about what you are doing for a second -- you are setting yourself up.

So drivers should confirm two things:
  • the rider's name (by the rider telling them)
  • and the rider's destination.
Riders should confirm at least two things:
  • driver's name (by asking the driver their name)
  • and the driver's FACE should match the picture on the app.
  • And you also have vehicle description, including tag number
  • but if the FACE doesn't match the picture, do NOT get in that car.
