It's supposed to look like a lion. Man, that's just cruel :earseek:

I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to.

Once our cat got so full of matted fur that I took her to the vet. They said they would probably have to shave off her very long hair into a lion cut and I was really quite upset to think of her looking like that.

When I went to pick her up though, they had managed to get most of the mats out by brushing them with something special and then they just cut out the rest and it didn't show.

Whew!!!! Was I ever glad.

So maybe they did it for a reason like that!! Let's hope so because that is one strange looking cat!!!

It's common practice for matted longhairs in the summer.
Bob, the cat across the street, always sports this do in
late June when it's going to be warm for a while.

::yes:: There is nothing cruel about it. I have three persians and two of them get the "lion cut" every summer.

edited to add - my cats ARE indoor persians.

ahh, I didn't think of it as a medical reason...I thought of it as more fashion than anything.

I suppose, though, that if I had to, I would.

I couldn't do that to a cat, because I would never be able to stop laughing:laughing:

I still think that picture is hilarious! LOL!!

But no, I wouldn't do it to my babies unless there was a very good reason for it (ie: a skin disease that had to be treated or something)

My inlaws, on the other hand, do that every summer to their long-haired cat because he's "too hot". He also looks miserable all the time. :p

I know the story behind the pics.
This lady that was from the south moved up north with her boyfriend. She had always taken her cat to get what was called a "line cut" every year. That is where they just cut off the excess hair and make a nice line (think of a bob for a cat). Well, she took it to the new groomer up north and with her southern drawl asked for a "line cut". Well, she was suprised to find out that it would be twice as much as what she paid down south. She asked the groomer "Are you sure you know what a line cut is?" He said "Oh, yes ma'am, we can do a lion cut." This is how her cat looked when she got it back.

Kennel to carry cat to groomers: 40.00
Gas to get to the groomers: 5.00
"lion cut" at the groomers: 80.00
Getting the look from a seriously mad cat: priceless!

My maine coon got shaved frequently. Not quite like that but once she got 15 years-old or so she just couldn't keep her fur from getting matted. Brushing was painful for her so she had to get shaved once or twice a year.

Years ago I had a cat that had a skin allergy and lost all of his fur every summer except for his on his head. He looked just like this picture except for the poofy feet.

My neighbor has this done to her cat every spring. I swear that cat walks around with a look that says "if you laugh, you die". Poor thing...

I laugh every time I see that cat's face......:rotfl:

You just know he left 'presents' all over the house.

As mad as that cat is looking, I'd be afraid to close my eyes! ;)

The first picture is actually the wallpaper I use for the computer. It always makes me giggle. :)

Guilty. I took my beautiful persian to the groomer one year, and she came home looking just like that. I almost fainted when she stepped out of the carrier. I learned a hard lesson that day- be very specific when you take your cat to the groomer. The groomer called it a "lion cut". Meriweather was not amused by the whole experience.

I used to have to do this, once a year to my cat. He was a persian mix, and his hair matted terribly! No amount of brushing would help. He would come home and we would laugh hysterically at him. You know what though? He LOVED it! He would immediately go and roll on the cold ceramic tile floor. It cooled him off and he loved it.

We give all three of our cats a lion cut (DW has allergies). The last time we went she wanted Louie to get a lion & mohawk cut. The groomer questioned my DW's request, but he looked so cool when they were finished.

BTW - His mohawk cut ran the entire length of his spine.
