Would you eat a new container of cream cheese, with the foil wrapping still on it, when it's been left out of the refrigerator since last night?

We went grocery shopping last night. Apparently, a new container of cream cheese got left out on the counter. My SO says it's fine to eat, I want to throw it away. What do you think?

Slam dunk in the trash. If not, it may slam dunk your intestines.

Only if you want to spend your weekend visiting your bathroom.

I wouldn't. I'm funny about foods and wouldn't eat a slice of pizza that had been left out for 2 hours. Food temps need to be kept at under 40 degrees (cold things) before bacteria spreads, and over I believe it's 160 for hot things.

My guess is, your house temp falls somewhere between 40 to 160, which means, bacteria can have a field day.

Keep in mind though, I'm REALLY anal about this stuff.

Cream cheese is a perishable dairy product and must be kept refrigerated whether the package has been opened or not. I do leave mine out on the counter a few hours before making a cheesecake and never had a problem but I guess I shouldnt do that either.

Thank You! He's going to have to listen to me now.

I wouldn't eat it, but we do keep a small amount of butter at room temp for days at a time. Been doing it for years and not sick yet. :)

I actually would. Pretty sure I have. I wouldn't want a restaurant to serve me that, but I really do think I have done that.

Just last week, I left a new, unopened bottle of coffer creamer out overnight. I bought it at 11PM, and used it at 9 AM...... no problems at all.

I do the same! Funny thing back when I was little our fridge had a compartment called a butter warmer. As long as I can remember I leave butter out, I hate hard butter.

Well, I gotta say that I think I may be OK if I ate it, but I wouldn't enjoy eating what I was eating because I'd be so worried about what MIGHT happen. So, that new container of cream cheese, is now in the garbage.

I hate that when that happens! Sometimes I'm just so tired by the time I get home from the grocery store, or the house is so chaotic, that something gets left out or put in the wrong place (like ice cream in the refrigerator or left in the trunk of the car).

Yea, you would probably take a photo of what came back out of you after eating it and post for us all to see. ;)

I must have a hardy constitution. I have left cream cheese out many times, and never had it go bad on me overnight. I like it soft, so have purchased it the night before & left it out for the next morning. I also leave butter out in the pantry (it's a little cooler than the rest of the house) so it is soft. I've been doing that since I got married back in '87 when I got married, and never got sick.

I say do what you think is right for you, but I wouldn't throw away cream cheese that was left out overnight.

For all you soft butter lovers, check out this site.

www.butterbell.com

I've had one of these for years and always have soft butter for my toast, waffles, or bagels. (Yes, we DO have bagels in South Carolina) I have given them as gifts as well and people LOVE them.

would you like that? :teeth:

If I understand it correctly, refridgeration of butter isn't necessary for perservation, it just makes it easier to handle (firm vs. soft).
I think the cream cheese is probably ok to eat but since you can't be sure you shouldn't do it.

Let me think. A container of cream cheese costs less than $2.00, even without a sale --- A trip to the emergency room can run let's say, $500.

Unless you are overly fond of your bathroom and want to spend the day locked in there with cream cheese coming out one end or the other, I wouldn't risk it. Bacteria growing in your innerds aint pretty. :sad2: I had bad cottage cheese once and I know of what I speak.

Well, at Sams Club they keep the packages of the sliced kraft cheese in the center aisle NOT refridgerated.......
