Would you cook to save $400 on vacation?

I'd do it in a heartbeat!!! Not so much for the savings (though that would be nice to splurge on something else, ie, fun snacks!) but for the relaxation factor. I love going out to eat, but I also love some downtime where manners don't count and kids don't have to spend time waiting for food. If it works for you, it's a great idea!

I didn't read all the pages here but it seems like the majority of people don't want to cook even if they have a kitchen. We bought into DVC and love the fact there is a full kitchen and a washer/dryer too. We have breakfast in the room every morning. Now this may be as simple as cereal, toasted bagles and cream cheese etc it helps start the day out. Lunch is done in the parks or where ever we may be. Dinner is usually back in the villa and I have no problem cooking as there is a dishwasher to do the dishes. I plan simple meals that I can utilize similar ingredients. I have no problem spending 30 minutes to cook a healthy dinner in the room as it gives us a chance to unwind and relax. Often we call it a day from the parks at 3 or 4 and don't go back.

Others will think I am crazy but I do laundry almost every day too.. This way I come back with clean clothes and the getting home part is less stressful for us. Toss the in to wash as we walk out the door and dry them when we are preparing dinner... Love, love the convenience of cooking and washing on vacation and still do feel like I am on vacation.

we do it all the time! Like other people have said, it isn't even necessarily to save money. Going out for 3 meals a day, with 5 kids, for 7 days is not fun.

When we stay at SSR, we often will buy the kids those frozen things they never get at home (pigs in a blanket, mozzarella sticks, pizza rolls..) as a treat and my husband will pick us up "real" food from one of the DTD restaurants.

I wouldn't. We love to eat out and try new restaurants. That was one of the things my DH likes so much about Disney. Its our vacation from cooking and cleaning a kitchen. We just look at the restaurants as another attraction... each one is different and unique. We love it.

I'm part of the "No Way" crowd. It's not a vacation for me if I have to cook and clean like I do at home. Part of my vacation is having someone else wait on me and clean up. We stayed in a villa with a full kitchen once and did almost all of our meals at the villa. I hated it and won't do that again. Now I loved having the washer and dryer cause I could do a load a night and not have to spend one whole evening in the laundry room.
We will stay in a one bedroom this coming November, but I have already informed DH I will not be cooking.

No on a Disney vacation I wouldn't want too. I cook at home & a vacation to me means eating out.
Plus, we rarely eat breakfast so cooking that would be a waste of time for us. I'd rather grab CS at the parks or wherever instead of hanging around the condo till lunchtime to eat.
Suppertime is when we really enjoy eating out. Going to a restaurant is just relaxing for us on vacation. And part of our Disney fun is trying new eating places.
But then I'm not traveling with little kiddos. If I was eating some meals at the condo would be a lifesaver & time to relax while they run around or nap. Lots of restaurants & little kiddos gets stressful fast as they get tired of it. At least my grandkiddos do!
Like when we go to the coast at Thanksgiving we can't handle eating all our meals out. Is more relaxing to grab a sandwich at the condo when little ones are around.

I would cook ONLY if I needed to save money on vacation. Fortunately for me, I don't so I won't!

I would cook to save money if we had a kitchenette. I would have the food delivered. We rented a condo at Chula Vista in the Wisconsin Dells for a few days and did just that. We had one eat out meal and I bought cereal and some other simple dishes to save us money. But I am going to WDW during free dining and will most likely be doing that plus adding one table service.

I would go down the middle on this one. Very light duty cooking... We rented a timeshare in VA last year, and were close enough to drive from home(if you are flying, this won't work), so here is what we did. I made lasagna, baked ziti, a turkey-veggie-noodle casserole thing, sloppy joe meat, and chili at home in either disposable baking dishes or, for the meat and chili, the ziploc twist top containers...wrapped everything super tight and froze it about a week ahead of time. Shoved it in a cooler the morning we left, and by the time we got there 4 hours later, it was still frozen! I packed cereal, and vacation treats (cookies, candy). Then when we got to VA, went to a supermarket and bought packaged salads, buns, lunchmeat, some small condiments, milk, juice, and bottled water.

We had cereal or toast in the morning before heading out, except for one or two mornings we felt like eating out. We ate lunch where ever we were, and usually by mid-afternoon, we wanted a break, so we would go back to the room, cool down, rest, and yes, I would take a container out of the fridge and pop it into either the microwave or the oven and push a button. That is how I cook on vacation. No work involved. When we couldn't eat off of paper plates the dishes just got thrown into the dishwasher, and we went back to the park after we ate. Now, would I prepare a whole meal from scratch in a timeshare??? On vacation??? No.

Oh, and laundry? I am one of the strange birds who loves to do laundry on vacation. Less to pack, less to carry, less clutter in the room. Normally, at the timeshare, I would start a load before we went back to the park in the evening, and dry it once we were back, so it never sat in the dryer. I did laundry at AKL also, that was mommy time with the animals and a Pina Colava though. I made it a point to do a lot of laundry there

I absolutely would not cook on vacation - I'm on vacation! If I can't afford to eat out, I shouldn't be wasting money on a vacation.

At most, I would be okay with getting cereal, milk, paper plates, and plastic spoons for breakfast in the hotel/timeshare. I rarely eat breakfast in a restaurant, since breakfast food is so simple and cheap to make... it's a ripoff to pay for it in a restaurant! ($6-7 for $0.25 worth of food...)

Soooooo

If someone saw it as a rip off to pay Disney $9 for 1 serving of chicken nuggets, when they could come home and buy a bag (already cooked) that serves 4 for $6 to serve for dinner at their condo - they "can't afford it"? But if you pass on breakfast because its too expensive and "so easy to make" its ok and you can afford it?

Are you in an Exclusive Rup Off Club or something? Like the clubs where only YOUR rip offs matter? Because I'm just not getting your logic here. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why if you do it, then its a rip off. If someone else does it, it's because they can't afford it.

Guess the number 1 thing to remember is that time is money in Disney. That being said, are you the type that is easy going or the type that wants to see it all. I would thing if you were ready to leave the park at dinner time, that would be fine, but I would not leave the park, eat, then plan to go back. It would be a 2 to 3 hour process. Also would have to take it account if you have kids and their ages. I would rather eat lite/budget in the park than leave and cook just because of the time involved.

lol, I am with you! ecept the logic that makes me giggle is, "No way, that is too much work."
Because setting an alarm to go off at exactly 180 days from your vacation is normal. That sounds like work to me!
And its not like we are cooking Thanksgiving dinner on vacation... I'm talking about throwing a pizza in the oven and opening a bag of sliced apples. (plus all the literature for the Fort Wilderness cabins say thst they will even do the dishes for us!

I love doing laundry on vacation!!! We were at Bay Lake Towers on our last visit and it was so nice to go home with clean clothes (done during nap/down time one afternoon) instead of bags of laundry to do at home. We lost no park or pool time as we did it during a planned down time. :cheer2:

Everyone gets to pick their own rationalizations for their expenses, thanks. It's The American Way.

I actually like doing laundry when I'm on a cruise... two hours of uninterrupted reading with no one around - OR - playing cards with my honeybun!

As someone else said... Disney food, not so good. I really dislike the counter service food and table service food , even the higher end places quality seems to have dropped. If we stay somewhere we can cook , we will always do at least breakfast in room , but will happily cook more , as I am not really Disney food fan anymore.

When we vacation at the beach, I don't enjoy having long wait times .Dragging my kiddo in from pool or beach , get all of us cleaned up and then out to eat , is not my idea of fun every night. We usually try to hit one really nice place out while at the beach and then light cooking the rest of time at condo . Nothing to do with saving money, its the fact I don't want to be bothered with leaving the beach for that long LOL.

We were at Bonnet Creek and cooked easy (VERY EASY) meals and had breakfast in the room, brought lunch and depending what we were doing we either ate a quick dinner in our room or ate Fast Food (I think we did this 3 times). I know we saved a ton of money doing this! We were there for 7 nights.

I should add, we had just gotten off a Disney cruise where we ate 24 hours a day!!!

I sooo could have written this ten years ago! Our kids are grown now but neither they nor their father ever caught on to the joys of doing laundry poolside at Disney. They thought I was making a big sacrifice for the family;)

If anyone is planning on cooking with a crockpot I highly recommend using crockpot liners-it makes clean-up almost nothing.

I am looking over my December plans and I see I could pretty easily save about $400 if I decided to cook a few dinners instead of going out. We are staying in a 1 bed at OKW and so have a full kitchen, I'm kind of tempted, it's not that we can't afford to eat out I have the money. I just think of how nice it is to grab a drink, cook something and chill without fighting more crowds at resturants. We are there Dec 17-27th and we will eat out 6 nights Ts, 1 lunch TS, and 1 Breakfast TS, and lots of CS lunches.

We are a group of 5 so cutting 3 meals would be save money and just be more relaxing which sounds good.

If you would cook, what would you cook? I'm thinking pizza, tacos... and something :rotfl:
We stayed at OKW in Jan. and cooked most of our meals - all breakfasts accept the morning we left and all our dinners but 1. We took homemade soup, spaghetti and a roast dish. We cooked them ahead of time and froze them. It was nice to enjoy our meals in our room after being out all day.

We too try and cook some of our meals. It's so much easier to eat breakfast in the room, not only saving money but time. I find that my children liked eating at the resort to have more pool time. They got tired of going out to dinner. Eat did eat one meal a day at the parks.

I like the idea of bringing homemade food you froze at home. I haven't done that yet.:thumbsup2
