Would you buy used ipod as a gift?

I bought a refurbed iPod for my husband a few years ago from Apple. It works great, and he loved it. We haven't had any problems with it.

I would argue that buying a refurb directly from Apple is as good as buying new anywhere. They come with the same 1 yr warranty as a brand new one does.

Me too, DD12 bought hers from Apple for $149 (3rd gen), just saying that that right now $5 savings is not significant, especially if you can get a new one locally at a store, or from a website with free shipping.

Sorry, I thought you were saying that the product isn't as good. I swear I'm not an Apple zealot or anything  I just didn't want the OP to think there was something wrong with getting a refurb from Apple.

To the op, I would always recommend a refurb directly from the Apple site. I got DH and me iPod classics almost 5 years ago and mine is still working like a champ. DH is a little rougher on his electronics and had to have his replaced twice within the first 2 years. Thank you Apple for the 1 year warranty and the extended warranty!

I'd talk to your daughter about this... since you're looking at the ipod touch, it's rumored (and likely) that the 5th generation is going to be coming out in the next 2-3 weeks.

The prices on the 4th generation have already started dropping at places like target, etc.

I would see if she'd want to wait, see what the 5th generation is going to offer, that the 4th gen doesn't, then go from there.

If she doesn't want to wait, you can get the 4th gen. 8 gb one for $204 right now, brand new.
Thanks for that info! I'm thinking about getting DH an iTouch for Christmas and I was wondering if there was a new one coming out soon.

My daughter wants an ipod for her bday. A new one costs about $235. An almost new one on craigslist costs about $150. Would it be ok to buy her a used one instead of a new one? Or would you just get the new one?

Factory reconditioned? Yes (they are less expensive than new ones). A used iPod from Craigslist? No way.

Reason being is that the factory reconditioned models tend to carry a decent warranty, while (as with any electronics bought from venues such as CL) you don't really know what that used iPod has been though...

Count me as a YES on a refurbished from Apples sight and a big NO from Craigslist. Obviously, check for sales. Not the same but we just bought a Mac Book Pro at Best Buy for a hundred dollars less than from Apple. The other thing about IPODs is that there are many options regarding memory and what's included.
