Would you buy Marriott now that it's on points?

My DH and I shopped for a timeshare a few years ago and settled on DVC because of the points, and of course many other factors. However, the Marriott locations were fantastic and we were impressed with the Newport Beach Marriott in SoCal, which is closer to home and close to DLR. So......now that they switched to points, the addonitis is tempting...., but with Marriott instead of Disney. Perhaps Marriott would help in the non Disney vacation pattern of our vacationing(meaning one year Florida, another year in Mexico, Vegas, Newport Beach, etc.) Any thoughts DVCbuddies?

Marriott is on points? Oh snot! THAT is information I did NOT need!!! Where is that little clicker thingy they used in Men In Black?

If I was considering non Disney time share then yes Marriott would be first on the list. I Like the points system and learning from my mistake with DVC I would buy in at more points than the minimum I would need. Disneys frequent reallocation of points across the grid has left me short on points based on what I intialy bought!

As long as you arebuying direct! If you are buying resale, any resales after June 20 will not be offered a point conversation from a previous seller who had week/week contract.

That is where the rub was for me. As of now it seems Marriott will run there prior system and their new point system at the same time!

After learning about the resale market, I personally will never buy direct again. But with no option available to resales converting to points, I did shy away from a HHI resale from Marriott.

I do agree outside of DVC, Marriott was definitely my next choice. With DVC treating resales equally, I have a contract that went to ROFR, and am waiting!

Good luck with your decision, there are some real pros that should pick this thread up. I would keep checking for their advice. In the meantime visit tug 2. net ot tugbbs.com I am not sure if these are the correct web addresses but google timeshare users group, then go to forums and Marriott and you may be able to come to a decision.

I think right now is a very tough time to buy Marriott for the points system as your only chance is retail and it's just as high as DVC in terms of price and fees, if not more so, when coming through the new points system. OTOH, it's a great time to buy Marriott weeks resale as it is for any other timeshare as long as you realize the risks involved including bankruptcy for some of them. For Marriott points I'd plan on waiting a couple of years gathering information before I proceeded since it looks like those who buy resale will either not have the option of converting to points and/or will have to pay a hefty price to do so. Don't get me wrong, I love Marriott and I am cautiously optimistic about their new points program as it goes through it's initial growing pains, I just think the current cost is too high, the program too much of an unknown and the risk/cost ration too high to do so today.

As always, great advice and accurate!:thumbsup2

As a Marriott owner (3 weeks) I would absolutely wait to see how the points program rolls out before I buy. The way it has been introduced has been horrible.:sad2: So confusing to existing owners and to Marriott employees. You could call the official Marriott number 10 different times and get 10 different answers to the same question. (Go over to the tug website to get an idea of what I am talking about.) I was so excited about the program until the details or potential details began to emerge. No clear explanation from Marriott on ambigious elements of the program.

I can not tell you how much I wish Marriott had followed Disney's program. I have loved our Marriotts for 11 years and have received wonderful trades with them using Interval. But I fear those days may be over. The program goes live on July 26th and then we will get a true idea of how it will work.

As far as cost, I believe the point cost would convert in DVC dollars to $96.00/pp with maintenance fees at $4.00/pp cost. In theory you would have all of Marriott's timeshare resorts to choose from. But there are so many catches that only time will tell if you will actually be able to book at the resort you want, when you want.

I was a huge Marriott cheerleader until the last 3 weeks. Now I feel like a second class weeks owner. :sad1: Marriott is going to make it so easy for DVC to sell Aulani. If I were on Oahu and went to a Ko Olina sales presentation at each resort, back to back, hands down I would choose DVC.:worship: Too many unknowns with Marriott.

Thank you for letting me vent!

Appreciate your post! I am one that tried hard the last 3 months to become a Marriott customer but too too many things going on with them right now and unfortunately, I would only buy resale after learning about timeshares the past year or so and I to am concerned at how they are going to treat their current customer base that opts not to convert to points.

I ended up placing an offer on another DVC for an add on.

I am not giving up on Marriott but think a year or to on the sidelines is best for me until all the dust settles. And that good advice was already offered in a previuos post.

Wow! Thanks for enlightening me. Perhaps it is too soon to jump in with so much uncertainty!

It's likely to be years before Marriott points are a viable option going forward since it doesn't look like you can convert if you buy resale or it will be very costly. However, a I hinted, it is a great time to pick up a resale week to use and trade if you can get by ROFR.

Marriott is not exercising ROFR right now, so you can get a steal. But, definitely buy where you want to stay!!!

On my gosh, they have the Disney disease. ;)
