Would you buy into the DVC if you only wanted to go every 2 or 3 years?

My DH and I love Disney World. We went for 10 days in August 2006 and stayed at the Beach Club. We have now booked 7 days at the Beach Club for Sept/Oct 2009.

We think that we'd only like to go either every other year or every 3 years. We love the BC and would I guess have to buy a BCV resale, right? They're not selling those anymore, right?

So would you buy into the DVC if you were going to go on that schedule? And would we only need 1/3 the points, since we can bank and borrow?

Thanks

Erin

That is why we did it.
We purchased a small resale at BWV, and a small add-on at BLT. We have enough points to go every two to three years depending on length of stay and the view we book.
We believe this approach will work well for us. We may add a VWL add-on if Disney of we have a sudden inflow of cash some year.

In this bad economy, I wouldn't obligate myself to that.....

BCV resales sell at a premium, so I would rent points instead, or look for coupons...

For only every other year or third, I wouldn't obligate myself.

With DVC, you have the option of banking and borrowing your points. So, that gives you the option of buying less points (obviously, you would buy smaller contracts via resale in that Disney has a minimum purchase of 160 points) and banking them into the next year. You also have the option of borrowing your points from the next year, so traveling every other year and buying in with a smaller contract is an ideal situation (provided you want to continue to vacation at Disney). In this economy, you are going to see Disney releasing a lot of deals in order to get people into the hotels and spending money so, perhaps, DVC doesn't make as much sense as it does when there aren't as many deals out there to be had. However, the cost of hotels are going to continue to rise, bad economy or not, so with DVC you have essentially pre-paid your accommodations for the next 35-50 years which will allow you to "break even" at some point. I think that you are an idea candidate for DVC, personally.

Would and did! Spent a long time running the #'s and it totally makes sense compared to renting. In fact, economically, there's no difference between buying 300 points to stay every year, 150 points to stay every other year or 100 points to stay every three years. You will pay the same amount (except the extremely modest price difference per point of a 100 point contract vs. a 300 point contract -- but every contract is priced differently anyway given UY, banked points, etc) and the total MF per stay will be the same.

We bought 150 BWV points at close to the market peak a few years ago ($85/point). First three years, we went for 4-day weekends each year. Now we're going to take a couple of years off, let family members use some points and then go for 8 days during a peak period in 2011. I think that in 3 years, we are already halfway to recapturing our purchase price plus MF compared to what we would have spent on accommodations. I will be very surprised if we aren't on the positive side by year 10, even if the resale value were zero.

If you know that you would love to go every 2 or 3 years, than I think you might want to consider DVC.

As you said, with banking and borrowing, you only need to buy 1/3 the points. For example, 1 week in a studio during the summer (Magic Season) would be 134 points.

You would only need a 50 point contract, which would probably run you around $4500 through resale. Your MF's would run between $200 and $300 per year.

Not a bad deal, IMO, for something you will own for a long time. And, once you start going and own DVC, you may decide to go more often, and can add on!!

Good luck!!

DVD does still sell at all of the resorts but at a price higher than through resale. You might also try staying at other resorts to make sure that BCV is really your favorite. We now have several favorites and have purchased four of them. :goodvibes

Sure... It will be a little tough, but not too bad. Just find a contract that when you bank and borrow is enough to give you the room you want, in the season you want for the time you want. We are considering adding on for either BCV or BWV so we can guarentee one of those resorts every 3 years... then will add BLT or the mythical but hoping to come Poly Villas (I can dream) in the same fashion. So in a 3 year cycle we guarentee either BCV or BWV and BLT or Poly VIllas if they happen. The third year we'll use our SSR points and get what we get!

To add to that... Look at the ones around your favorite park. Epcot is my wifes, and my second favorite, so BCV or BWV make sense to us. Tower of terror is my fav ride, so they are also beneficial for that.

If you like the MK, check out WLV or BLT. If you like DTD, check out SSR or OKW. Animal Kingom is AKV.

That is how we plan to buy for Disney in Hawaii. We plan to buy enough points to go every three years. That way we'll have home resort advantage and can book at the 11 month window.

Well you don't know his financial situation either... he could have $20K sitting in the bank. Its all relative. Only he can decide if the financials work.

BTW, right now is actually one of the best times to buy DVC IF you have the money. BCV resales are way down right now in cost. They are going mostly for $80-90 a point, which is the cheapest I have seen in a long time. BWV is going for $75-85 a point. A LOT of people are selling, so if you have the means, you can find a good bargain. Just pick a Pricepoint, call a reseller like Timeshare Store (who the above prices are taken from) and tell them how many points, at what resort and the price per point you are looking for. Be patient and they will try and find you something.

We bought into DVC with the mindset that we may only visit once every two or three years. According to my financial calculations, I figured that we did not have to visit WDW every year in order to "justify" a DVC purchase.

Going every three years is feasible because you can bank, use, and borrow points. However, there is a provision in the DVC contract that permits DVD (the development company) to suspend banking or borrowing of points. When we purchased, our Guide mentioned that DVD thought about suspending banking right after 9/11. DVD's fears were that people wouldn't travel in late 2001 and that a lot of points would flood the system the next year. However, DVCers didn't stop traveling after 9/11, so there was no need to suspend banking.

We bought with the midset of taking a vacation every year, but we end up taking it once every 1.5-2.5 years on average. It's great, though, because we are able to bank and borrow the points to get a larger room and share the Disney magic with our friends and family. Thus, a trip every 2-3 years is great for us.

I'm not a member yet, but this is exactly what I plan to do: buy about 50 points, resale of course, and bank and borrow so that we can go every few years.

We love WDW, but don't really want to go there every year. Going every 2-3 years, or alternating them with trips to Hilton Head or Vero Beach would satisfy us!

I like to just browse the available resales, and I also have to convince my husband. ;) I'm all ready, but he needs some convincing. I'll probably just end up surprising him with the deed when I do purchase. :)

And yes, it is feasible to buy 1/3 the points to go every 3 years....

I guess my reaction is more that I don't want to pick up any more obligations right now (even with the 20K in the bank)

As opposed to being against DVC specifically. YOu know I love DVC.

I'm just being cautious, and the OP asked if I would do this, and for me, I wouldn't... but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't work well for others depending on their financial situation.

Best,
Goldi

We bought 100 points with the intention of banking/borrowing and using 200 points to go every other year. Now, we are thinking of using 150 points per trip and going two out of three years. Our plan is to take an early June trip, buy AP's and go spring break the following year, and then take a year off and bank. This way, we can take advantage of the $100 AP discount (for as long as it lasts) and save some money that way. If the ticket discounts or perks change, then we will have to rethink our plans. We like to stay at the nicer hotels (tried Pop for two nights...too small!) so DVC makes sense for us, financially.

We did exactly that....and immediately bought another contract...and another...and another! Once you realize how great it is, you can't wait 2 years and addonitis sets in! We are going three times this year. We only have one trip scheduled for next year and it is almost depressing to think of so much time between visits!
Buy...and Good Luck keeping to your plan of every 2 or 3 years!

Good luck with your decision.

As adminijed said, you will find yourselves going more often than that (if you are or become like many of us here, lol). I also thought once year or every other year but we have become hooked and addicted to WDW and DCL cruises.
