Would you borrow a car?

My grandparents have told me that I can use their 'good' minivan for our upcoming FL trip. Theirs is a Dodge Caravan w/stow n go. Ours is one of the smaller Chevy ventures. I was checking theirs out today and in addition to more leg room between the 1st and 2nd row, there is a lot of storage in the s-n-g wells. There will be 5 adults and 2 kids traveling. All except 2 adults will be traveling 2.25 hours to the Amtrak station, then taking the Autotrain to FL. Once in FL, we will all be sharing the van. Mileage on our van and their van is about the same. What else would you consider when trying to decide whether to borrow someone elses vehicle?

Insurance? What happens if there is damage to the vehicle?

What happens if one of the vehicles breaks down during the swap? Who pays for repairs?

Will your good relationship continue if something goes wrong?

If I were comfortable with all the potential issues that might arise I would do it. If it were a long drive I would consider renting a car to save wear and tear on mine but since you're taking the train that isn't an issue.

I would feel more comfortable in my own auto. :drive:

If an accident should happen, if the car is stolen, etc, etc - it would be easier if the auto is yours. :thumbsup2

You know your grandparents best. Are all the travelers related? If they are comfortable with letting you take it and it was their idea anyway, I'd do it. I would check into the insurance too.

I wouldn't for such a short trip. It seems like the only thing you are gaining is some extra space for people.

To and from WDW you are only going to be the van with your stuff for around 3.5 hours.

If you need more room and can make it work, use a car top carrier. Once the station everyone gets out. Everything on top of the car, including the carrier, gets thrown in the car where ever it fits. You only need to leave room for a driver. I saw this once with a Sear Clam shell type carrier.

Reverse in FL.

I learned early in life, never borrow anything from anyone.....

If I wanted the extra room etc in a van...I'd rent what I wanted.....and have done so for many trips...any issues and its a quick call and another vehicle is brought....
