Would YOU be offended if your new neighbors put up a privacy fence?

(This post if mainly for my DH, who believes that our putting up a privacy fence will offend our next door neighbors. )

As some of you know, we moved into our house in November. We plan on building a new deck in the summer, and our plan is that the SECOND the ground thaws, we are putting up a privacy fence.

It's mostly for privacy, obviously, but also so we don't have to stare at our neighbors ugly, over decorated yard. Also, our other neighbors already have them up, so our yard looks dumb with the one side "fenceless".

My DH is gregarious and takes to everyone, and doesn't like to offend anyone either. I told him that NOBODY will be offended if we put up the fence. Would anyone like to concur??? PLEASE!!!

If you already have a relationship with them, they will not care. If you don't, they might get the wrong impression...

No. I would put one up if I could. However our HOA does not allow it. We have to have 4 inch gaps between slats.

In TX we had a privacy fence, I miss it so much.

We are putting up a deck as well to the tune of 13,000ish. (faint) Now it is pretty big and we are doing 100% composite. Although reg. cedar is not really cheap either.

If you want a privacy fence, get a privacy fence. Your dh can chat with the neighbors in the front yard and then invite them into the backyard if he wants to continue chatting.

When we put up our privacy fence, it was for two reasons... to let our dogs walk themselves in the yard and for privacy when we used our hot tub.

We get along great with our neighbors and we jokingly told both of them that they shouldn't be offended by the fence. As far as we are concerned, either neighbor could have come into our yard at any time. They both joked with us that they figured that we were becoming private people who didn't like them anymore.

BTW, the dogs (now dog) always loved the fenced in yard.

Not at all. I think it's courtesy though just to let them know before you do it. No reason for it though. We just made sure we mentioned it. Of course, we've always had dogs so that is our reason--not that you need one.

Privacy fences are normal here so I can't imagine it any other way. We did have a taller one built than the original but we have alleys behind our houses so I don't think that anyone even noticed.

No, I'd be happy....if you put one up, then I'd only have to pay for 2 sides instead of 3.

Would I be offended? No - I'm in the camp of "fences make good neighbors!".

Just check to find out if the fence can go on the property line (have a survey done) or has to be set in on your property.

Unless you're close with your neighbors I don't even know why you'd bother mentioning it. (I mean, if you're chatting already that's one thing, but I wouldn't go out of my way to tell them.) If someone is offended that I want a fence then I don't need to talk to them. My neighbors have no natural right to look in my yard, so they should have no right to be mad.

(For the record, I feel this way because I wouldn't be offended if my neighbor put up a fence without telling me.)

You should tell your neighbors you are putting up a fence. That is just the right thing to do.

That way they are aware and you can make sure property issues are not a problem.

We are doing a basic deck... pressure treated wood... something like 10x20. We have no idea what kind of cost we are looking at, but it doesn't matter.

Definitely. Our fences have to be completely inside our property line with so that no part of the fence above or below ground encroaches on another property. We also have two easements bordering our backyard, one we couldn't build on, and one we took the risk of building on.

Would I be offended, no, do I like them, no, do I have one, yes A big selling point for our house was the big fenced in back yard for the dog, had the dog not been around we would probably have taken the fence down if we could (we have a large pond in our backyard so we have to have a fence. I would replace it with a nice chain link or shorter one though. I miss our old neighborhood where everyone just milled around in the various yards at night and chatted.

You should tell your neighbors you are putting up a fence. That is just the right thing to do.

That way they are aware and you can make sure property issues are not a problem.

My most recent post explains why property lines aren't a problem. However, we did tell our only neighbor, in case he was interested in sharing a side, but that was before we found out we couldn't even build next to his property because of an easement.

Oh please, just because you have a HOA does not mean people's backyards are ugly. We settled for the black aluminum fence. Eh, it is ok.

We have put up privacy fences, decks, pool, many concrete patios, etc... in our previous homes. This is house #4.

We are NOT putting up wood because we do not want to stain it. It is not cheap to stain. Plus we want low maintenance.

Of course if you are doing a wood privacy fence then you can include that into the cost of your staining.

Yeah, my dad and DH are putting up the fence. We already priced that... it'll be around $500 (but like I said, we only have to do one side...)

My dad is a staining professional, my DH will learn from the best.

I don't care how much it costs, I want it done in two days. LOL. I really should start getting quotes.

Privacy fences are the norm here so not only do I have a privacy fence, I have 15 ft Carolina cherry hedges on the inside perimeter of my fence all the way around. Not only can't I see my neighbors, I can't see their houses.
