Would YOU be offended if your new neighbors put up a privacy fence?

Yeah, my dad and DH are putting up the fence. We already priced that... it'll be around $500 (but like I said, we only have to do one side...)

My dad is a staining professional, my DH will learn from the best. :goodvibes

I don't care how much it costs, I want it done in two days. LOL. I really should start getting quotes.

Lucky you! We don't do construction. Plus dh can't because of his back and we live on a bluff.

It cost a fortune to put in the fence. It took them over 2hrs to dig one hole on 2 of them. They had to go rent another piece of equipment to get thru the rock.

:sad2: Oh man! I have heard that fences on hills/bluffs can be triple the cost! :scared1:

We have a lot of outdoor home improvement planned this summer! First the fence, and then either the driveway or the deck. :worship:

We can rant and rave deck construction together! :rotfl:

What jumps out at me is the word "privacy". I truly don't even know what a privacy fence is. :confused3

If they are what I think they are, then here we call them "stockade fences", and just about everyone has them. I wouldn't be offended if my neighbor was putting up a stocade fence.

My suggestion would be to just leave the "privacy" part of it out and say you're going to put up a fence.

I wouldn't be... but when we moved to our current home, the lessons we learned at our old home taught us to put up the fence before we established any type of relationship with the neighbors - we did, as a courtesy, go over and tell them (elderly, but 20-ish grandson lives in the basement) we were putting up a fence because we planned to put a pool in later.

We are SO glad we have it - even with it, the grandson's kids wander around and over to our house occasionally.

... the neighbors on the other side of the people next to us have a privacy fence, too - wonder if they've gotten the message yet?!

We have a neighbor on one side with a small yappy dog that barks at everything that moves. There is a fence on the other side of their yard and woods behind us all so that means it only barks in our direction, towards the corner of our house where our bedroom is located. I would love to put up a fence - just one side, no front, no back, no other side - so that stupid dog would only see a giant white wall and keep it's yap shut. lol

We can't have a full privacy fence in our neighborhood (HOA rules), but we can have privacy screens around our patio/decks. We have a split rail fence around the perimeter of the backyard, and a 6ft L-shaped privacy screen that screens our patio from our next door neighbor. Nobody was at all offended- we went in with the next door neighbor and had both yards fenced by the same company- we split the cost of the shared fenceline.

We have such small lots (6 per acre or so), and the homes are so close together, that it is nice to have a little privacy from the next house over.

That is nice they let you do that. We can only do it if we put in a pool, which no one is going to do here on a bluff. It would cost a small fortune.

But we may be able to put in something around a hot tub, which we would like to get. We poured a patio with that in mind.

Our neighbor on one side is greatly offended by our privacy fence, but that's OK because one reason (among many others) that we put it up was to slap him in the face.

I'll see if I can dig up my old thread about it and add to this post.

I would say most NORMAL people who have a accurate sense of their own self-importance won't care!

Found my fence/neighbor horror story!

Most people around here have privacy fences. We have a dog and a pool, so a fence was important for us. A privacy fence is for the neighbors as much as us, because NO ONE needs to see me in a bathing suit!:rotfl:

My neighbor certainly became offended when I built our privacy fence.

Mind, I do not like the neighbor. In fact, I mortgaged everything I had and purchased the property behind the neighbor’s house, as well as on the other side of his house. I then had installed a privacy fence on all three sides of him (he can only look out of the front of his house, facing the street).

It is not really a ‘fence’. It is more like a wall: 25 feet high and 15 feet wide, with turrets every 20 feet (I was inspired by my visit to the Great Wall of China). It is built of reinforced concrete. I made it 15 feet wide to give the guard dogs plenty of room as they roam the top of the wall from one end back to the other. The turrets are, of course, to house the security guards I hired.

I am now negotiating with the neighbor that lives directly across the street from my obnoxious neighbor. Should I successfully purchase that property I will then seek permission from the city council to extend the wall (on either side of the obnoxious neighbor) from my side of the street to the other, leaving, of course, tunnels for cars to drive through. Should I be successful then the wall across the street from my neighbor will be around 40 feet high.

I have decided against having cannons brought in and aimed at his house, as going too far. I do not want to be thought of as extreme.

Wouldn't offend me at all ...

By the way, its YOUR home, whatever works for you that does not infringe or break laws should be okay by all neighbors!

As I look in my yard now I am cringing, all my Evergreens (over 100' of them took such a beating with the weight of the snow), they went from 10'-12' to about 4' as they are all so bent over:scared1: HOPING they will pop back up....we like Privacy in our yard!

kudos to you for the creativity. Here I thought I was going to be the Lone Ranger by suggesting a row of arborvitaes instead of a fence. IMO much easier maintenance & more aesthetically pleasing -- but the Great Wall motif is definitely another way to go.

Well, I have planted English Ivy all along the base of the Wall, and I believe that in a year or two it will cover most of the wall (save for the slots where you shoot the arrows, if need be). It will be pleasing to the eye (well, not my neighbor, since the ivy is on my side).
