Would you be offended if your child's teacher gave them these?

I teach 4-5 year olds and this year, about half of them are about to drive me batty with untied shoes 5-6 times a day. In addition to the time wasted tying shoes, it really grosses me out to think of where those laces have been dragging.

We have tried to teach the kids to tie their shoes, but the parents seem to prefer the shoes with short, glossy laces which are almost impossible for the kids to practice on. If they manage to get them tied, they are loose again within an hour.

So.......I want to buy the curly, no-tie shoe strings for my kids for Christmas. They are like this

So, would you be offended if I put these in the stocking I am stuffing for the kids?

My kids like all sorts of fun accessories and I wouldn't be offended by something like that.

Now if you went and replaced their laces yourself, I'd have a problem.

And I hear you about those shoe laces! Sometimes they are wet from being in a puddle on the bathroom floor.

I teach 1st grade and for 19 years now, I have refused to tie laces. I tell parents on Back to School Night that velcro is the way to go if your child does not tie shoes.

Whenever a student needs their laces tied, I have them find another student to do it.

That might be my next step with some of these kids! Just kidding, but can you imagine tying 20 kids shoes all day long? I'm thinking I'll bring a pair of shoes and show the kids how they work. After that, I'm sure they will bug their parents until they put them in.

Aren't there also decorative shoelace clips? They might be easier for the child to put on themselves.

I wouldn't be offended, my friend who is a kindergarten teacher has the rule in her classroom to ask three before you ask me, that saves her from having to tie tons of shoes.

Im a kindergarten teacher and I have the same rule--this applies to things like tying shoes...or opening their snack, etc...

When our kids were in kindergarten the teachers told us that if the kids couldn't tie their own shoes they HAD to have velcro. 2 of our kids were tying their shoes by 4 or so but our youngest was a stinker about it and we told him he couldn't go to kindergarten until he learned. The night before kindergarten started he started tying his own shoes--all on his own--he could obviously do it, just wouldn't. Recently same kid didn't want Dad to show him how to tie a necktie so he looked it up on the Internet-dang kids

You just lace them through the shoes. Since they are curly, they don't need to be tied at all. I am going to demonstrate to my kids before they go home.

Maybe mention in class that you have extras to sell. The parents may want more for their other shoes once they realize how great they work. Or give them out for extra credit, or when a child does really well on a special project.

Those are cute! As an SLP who has worked with many OTs, I've been told that the average age of kids learning to tie shoes has increased. Blame it on that lovely velcro I guess. Have you asked parents to practice tying shoes at home? I'm sure many haven't thought about it at 4 and 5 these days.
