My MIL has sent us an invitation to a pig pickin'. I'd like to know what one is before deciding whether to accept. I've asked my co-workers and one advises that it is simply a pig roast but another suggests that perhaps there is a litter of piglets and each guest "picks" one to take home and raise.

I suspect the former is correct and the latter is just trying to scare me. Is a pig pickin' the same as a pig roast?

Thanks!
Peggy

I think your co-worker is right. It is simply a pig roast. The only pig you will be taking home will be in a doggy bag. LMAO

Just make sure it isn't really a Peg Pickin' or you might be in trouble! ;)

pig roast whenever the urge hits them........big pit in the ground and then cover it up..........soooooooooo delicious ......and juicy......I loved it....and I am not a pork person........I think that is the first of that type of meat I have eaten in years.......

PUMBA!!!!

Of course you're not a "pork person!" Well, actually, you are. But wouldn't eating pork be kinda creepy to you? Like... cannibalism?:(

:D

PEG2001- Are you, by chance, in the Carolinas? I think pig pickins are a regional thing, and that's the only place I've encountered them.

Pig Pickin' --- That's what we call it here. My wife went to her first one last year and loved it!

 Yup....a pig pickin is traditional here in NC. You'll simply be eating the pig...not taking it home.

Be prepared. I was horrified at my first pig-pickin' (in NC) when I was in high school. They had us go right up to the bbq and they served the meat fresh off the pig. My stomach turned a bit when I saw the pig's head with an apple in its mouth.

However, the meat was delicious. There is nothing better, especially when served with hush puppies. The sauce they used is amazing too.

Have a great time, just be prepared.

I'm a native NC'er and it's a big thing around here and lots of fun. Most "pig pickins" we've been to, you also will need a disignated driver:crazy: It usually consist of a Pig (we call that Bar-B-Que in these parts), slaw (yuck), hushpuppies, baked beans, potato salad and a keg. Just one big Hoe Down!!! Go & have fun!!!

The invitation did originate from North Carolina! We'll have to travel to it from East Tennessee.

Thank you for all the reassuring replies! My neighbors would not be happy with a pig pen next door. ;)

Great fun!!! :bounce:

Funny thing, I was raised in NC but only went to a Pig Pickin after moving to Florida.

Oh, man, being in NY now, but originally from NC, I haven't been to a Pig Pickin in years. Used to love them. Even if you don't like pork, the side dishes themselves are also to die for. Now how am I ever going to satisfy my sudden craving for a hushpuppy and sweet tea?

I have been to a coupe of pig roasts. I try to stay away from where the pig is, because I can't stand to see it all laid out like that, looking at me!

Oh please..can I go???? I love Chattanooga, but I miss NC pork BBQ, especially from a pig pickin' That vinegary sauce is sooo good. I say go and enjoy! (I also miss going to fish frys :p )

The more, the merrier! My DD4 and DD7 would fit right in with your four boys, I bet!

Oh, No! I feel a cravin' for some Speedy's BBQ in Lexington, NC. (The BBQ capital of the world!)

I would only accept the invitation if they are going to serve vinegar based sauce.;) You will need a designated driver as someone else mentioned.

Be sure not to leave before someone starts cloggin' to the fiddlers' bluegrass music! You don't want to miss the evenings entertainment. We had a Pig Pickin' for our rehearsal dinner. My husband is a country boy at heart.
