My husband is thinking about purchasing a 2005 Chevy Equinox with 99,000 miles on it. The SUV is in good condition inside and out but I think it has way too many miles on it! What do you all think? The car salesman said "these cars are ment to run up to 200,000-300,000 mile now a days". Is that true? The lot is going to give my husband a 1 yr warranty on it and the asking price is $9,800. Thanks

Sorry to say I would not.

And if you do make sure in the warranty it says what's going to get fixed in the warranty. And how much out of pocket will you have to pay.

My mom bought a 2005 Dodge Caravan last July with over 80,000 miles on it and I haven't had one minutes trouble with it. I love that van and wouldn't give it up for anything. In May 2007, I bought a 2000 Saturn LS2 with 97,000 miles on it and DH is still driving it, we have had regular wear and tear repairs, but that is to be expected, especially with the number of miles he drive per day. Both have rolled well past 100,000 miles and are still going strong. Vehicles are meant to go 200,000 miles now and I wouldn't hesitate, but I would hae them run a Car Fax before I made a commitment.

I do believe that cars are built to RUN for that many miles, but you are asking for trouble. They will RUN, but things will start to go wrong, break, etc., which means more money!

I had a 2004 or 2005 Equinox (can't remember) but I couldn't wait to dump it. I just didn't like the way it drove. It got lousy gas mileage and other than some good leg room in the back, I just hated it. I did notice the newer models are claiming much higher mileage than I ever got (I was around 14 miles/gallon). I would also never spend $10K on a car with 100K miles. Just my mind set.

personally, i would not buy a car that new with that many miles it. it's been driven quite a distance in a relatively short period of time. with that said, i bought my SUV 12 years ago with 60,000 miles on it and it now has over 200,000...never had any problems with it beyond the normal things that go wrong (dead battery, fuel pump, alternator) and it is still going strong. it is a GM vehicle as well.

We just bought a with 2000 Tahoe 101,000 miles on it. We paid 5500. Now dh went for it because the "motor is clean". He did replace the back bumper. Naturally he found one on Craigslist for 75 bucks.

You need to look up the NADA yourself because I don't know your details.

A lot needs to make a profit, which is why we buy private party.

Is the warranty worth it? Depends what it covers. My guess is that is it only going to cover very specific things so I would look over that carefully.

It is hard to say if the car is worth it because my dh can't drive it or look at the motor.
Have you seen the CarFax on it?

We only buy used and have bought cars with low miles that were just as much a PITA as cars with high mileage. However a high mile car can nickel/dime you if you don't know what you are looking at.

Exactly. I just picked up a 89 Corolla with 174,000 miles for a daily commuter. Awesome gas mileage and drives pretty good for a 20 yr old car.

OP, my cousin just purchased a 2007 Equinox and she loves it. I have no idea how many miles were on it but she talk nothing but positive about it. If you do purchase the car, definitely bargain the salemans and make sure the timing belts and maintenance is up to date. Ask to see the car"fox".

that is SO true. a honda will run forever. i had an old 1978 civic that my uncle's former stepson is STILL driving. it's definitely not pretty to look at, but it's like brand-new mechanically.

You know, that is all well and good but I would not buy a new car and pay money to get ripped off. There is nothing wrong with "used". We only buy used.

The Tahoe we just bought, we can drive it for a few yrs. and then sell it for at least 3-4,000ish range in which we will have only paid 2,000 for a car as opposed to the outrageous sums of a new car.

We used to have an '89 Corolla and it was a wonderful car. I am still kicking myself for selling the car. We put a new starter in it once, that was IT. We used to get 45 MPG with that baby .

OP, it depends on what the car is for, as a second or third car, maybe, as a primary car, probably not. If it were a Honda or Toyota, I wouldn't hesitate, but a Chevy....

I would not buy it with that many miles. My SUV died earlier this year with 126,000 miles on it. I could have it fixed... with a junk yard motor for $2500 plus labor!! Needless to say, I am now driving a convertible. It was almost as cheap with 34,000 miles as it was to buy the replacement motor.

I bought a 2005 Equinox towards the middle of 2004, so it was the first year model that the vehicle was made. At first, I liked it. But then after a while, I couldn't wait to get rid of it. I loved the roominess and the outside of the car, but hated all the problems. My husband worked at a Chevrolet dealership for several years, and he tried to tell me not to buy a car the first year it's made. I wouldn't listen, and did it anyway. We ended up taking it back to have it fixed (under warranty, of course) for so many different things. The radio had to be replaced, the radiator and radiator hoses had to be flushed, and when that didn't work, they had to be replaced. The radio controls on the steering wheel had to be replaced. And before I traded it, the gear shift indicator lights went out. I traded for a 2006 Honda Accord, and though I miss having all the room of an SUV, I love my Honda and don't regret getting rid of the Equinox. Even though my father-in-law retired from GM, and my brother-in-law still works there, GM's quailty just isn't up to par.

I have to agree and I only buy new unless it was a classic from the 60's. There is a reason people get rid of a car that is "perfectly good".

Many more people get rid of cars due to the fact that they just want a different one, needs different type (aka more kids need SUV or van), gas prices go up or down vs. they have a lemon.

I refuse to lose a couple thousand dollars turning onto the street so we always buy used and have never regretted it.

We have an 05 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT, love it!!! It's got 116,000 miles on it and it runs great. I do think you should do some research on it, carfax are great, take it to a mechanic you trust to have it looked at, but really I wouldn't be too scared by the mileage.
