I have a mid-size car reserved through National--10 days and a little over $200. I have access to the Emerald Aisle and the Executive Emerald Aisle. Originally, there were 4 adults and 1 infant in our party and we were going to hope for a large SUV or Minivan, but be okay with a full-size car.

Now my MIL wants to come with on our trip and we have 5 adults and 1 infant. Too many people to "chance it" on what's available in the Emerald Aisles.

Minivan prices are through the roof for our dates. I can find them at around $500 for options where I pay up front (either through the sites directly or Undercover Tourist) or around $600 where I would pay at the end of the rental and don't pay up front.

Here is my question: What are your thoughts on making 2 reservations--keeping my National rental and hoping for a large SUV or MiniVan and having a "backup" reservation for a Minivan (with no money paid up front). Worst case scenario...nothing that would fit 6+ passengers in Emerald Aisles and we use our Plan B reservation.

My thought is that you should book and pay for what you really need. Why take a chance on your vacation?

What OP is proposing will absolutely work. Make the ressie's in different names. Have the backup person hang back and start the rental processif the first ressie doesn't work out.
