I post on another message board pretty frequently. Now in my user id I have my hometown listed. Besides my name I do not know that I have posted any specifics about my family.

Last night, I got a PM from someone, that specificaly listed all the names of my family:confused: Nothing threatening, more like,

Hi Anne,

Hows Joe? Does your son Mark like living on campus at ________
How is your daughter Mary? I guess she will be next to leave for college. And it went on a little longer, making references to the town and HS. It was very weird. When I looked up this person they actually were newly registered and no posts.
I sent a PM back asking who it was, and the reply was

HA-HA wouldn't you like to know!

I feel like I am being stalked.

After freaking out my husband admitted it was him, playing a little trick. Why am I not finding this amusing?

hmm that is a little weird....think it could be someone trying to play a joke on you? (granted, not very funny, but you never know!)

Thats kinda creepy. Maybe it is one of your friends or family members playing a joke on you, like an early April Fools or something. When I registered on this board I PM my mom and freaked her out because she didn't know I registered. Hopefully it is someone you know and just a joke. Be careful.

If you don't mind me asking, which board was it? Being the security expert I am, I know that a lot of message boards are VERY easily hacked and hackers just like to do that for fun.

I'd be freaked out if some new person on the DIS that I wasn't familiar with sent me a PM like that. If they do know you from another board or something, it is mean of them to try to scare you like that.

I will PM you the board. But you can reply on this thread.

Thanks

JoNo hacking is one thing but hackers wouldn't know your family names. It has to be a family member playing a joke. if worried contact the web master and ask for there info.

wow, yeah that would freak me out. Hopefully it is just someone playing a joke but still I'd report it to a moderator at the site, maybe they can trace their IP address which could find a location unless it's a dynamic IP (one that changes each time they sign on the net) or the mod could find out info from their profile to see if you may or may not know that person.

Let us know what happens.

Yep, I just might feel a little freaked out by it too. I think it would just seem really weird unless the message was somehow threatening. Then it would be very upsetting.

It sounds like someone knows you. It wouldn't freak me out. I think this person will reveal who they are, after a bit. Just a little fun they are having with you, I think. They've seen you posting and know you well and won't it be nice to find out who they are, when they tell you? You have a DIS friend, not an enemy.

well, it's really hard to explain, but here's my best shot:

IF it is a hacker, he could get various info from the message board including a static IP of tea please, (or a dynamic IP, just not changed b/c she hadn't gotten off-line at the time) and managed to find an open port on her computer, throw in a script or two, use a port listener, go into the computer & find info.

Hopefully it IS a family member, but never rule out the extreme.

hmmm, I tested the board and it didn't have any basic vulnerabilities, so I would just say it's probably your family or someone you know trying to spook you. Just call em up and ask around. If still no one says they did it; keep an eye out for other strange messages.
