Would this bother you?

No it would not. Henry VIII was a disgusting man who had two of his wives beheaded. He has been dead for centuries. It's not like he was a saint.

I agree that no one should be called revolting but he probably was.

Dead? Yes. But his heirs still walk the earth!

There was never a Henry the Ninth, I guess because no one wanted to be associated with him so closely, just like there were no more Richards after the third one (and no Stephens after that one).

I don't know what world YOU are living in, because overweight people, no matter how active they may be, are looked down on like the plague.

1st graders say they would rather lose an arm than be fat.

While obesity may be at an all time high (and it is a sad disease, it really is) I would not say people are more tolerant of it. It is still harder for bigger people to get hired for a job. And, I don't even go there with my Match.com profile. The only "negative" to my profile is that I am not a size 6......but apparantly that is enough for no guys to contact me or return my contact attempts.

As far as overreacting, it might rub me the wrong way. I think the context in which he used the phrase is important. If he was using it to indicate that Henry was morbidly obese, he probably should have just said "morbidly obese." But, it may have just been a harmless statement. Now, if his tone indicated that he finds obesity gross and disgusting and that he looks down upon obese people, yeah, probably a bit insensitive.

I think, really, it is probably okay. Now, if there were morbidly obese people in the class, not overweight, but significantly obese, as in Henry VIII proportions, it probably did make them feel really, really bad. And it was probably not a nice thing to say, especially if there are obese people in the class.

I probably would not have been offended, unless he made it seem like he dislikes bigger people, and then I would worry about how he sees me as a person.

OT I know. I wanted to tell you that I love your post!! :goodvibes I have read many of your posts and I think you always have a great outlook on things. I also wanted to tell you that the guys on match.com must be blind because I think you are adorable!;)

I have always struggled with my weight and let me tell you, there are plenty of awesome guys out there who love a woman for much more than their size. My DH and I have been together for 13 years and there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't tell me how pretty I am or how much he loves me.

No they don't Henry had 2 sons (one legitimate one not) and 2 daughters none of his children produced any children the heirs of his sister Margaret are on the throne now. Mind you nice to see someone remembered King Stephen.

Uh, I guess I'm living in my world. Where, as a large woman, I am happily married, gainfully employed, surrounded by great friends and generally having a pretty good life. :confused3

I haven't noticed anyone crossing the street to avoid me recently and if someone has a problem with me because of my weight, well, that's their issue. I realize that overweight people can be exposed to discrimination and unkindness, but I don't think their world revolves around it. We are, as a society, fairly tolerant of overweight and even obesity. I don't see how we couldn't be since the majority of Americans are overweight or obese.

Ordinarily this wouldn't be any of my business, but you've been really "out there" about your life lately and you've chosen to quote and respond to me. I think you're really blowing the weight issue out of proportion and chalking a lot of things up to weight and appearance that are really more personal issues. I know others have suggested it, but I think you might get some benefit from counseling. Weight is not the be all and end all of life. It's not really even that big of a part of it.
