Would this be considered 'cocktail attire'?

Ok...so I go to open today's mail and there is a fat envelope with DH's name on it. Being the curious person I am, I open it. It turns out it is an invitation to DH's 10 yr HS reunion in late August. The invitation specifies that attendees must wear 'cocktail attire'.

Now I know what that would entail for us gals and I have the perfect little black dress that I'm planning on wearing with a pewter lace shawl and matching pewter colored sandals. But what on earth constitutes 'cocktail attire' for a guy? A tux? Really nice ironed button down silk shirt and tie with nice khakis and dress shoes?

I don't think a tux is necessary, but maybe a nice suit and tie.

OH god...don't tell DH that! He'll want to drag out what I call "The Zoot Suit". It's this totally hideous gray suit with black pinstripes and HUGE lapels. He likes to wear it with a pair of black wingtips and I swear all he needs is a fedora and a tommygun and he'd look like a really geeky Al Capone.

Cocktail attire to me means a nice (maybe sexy!) dress for me, and dockers and a jacket or a suit for DH. To my 10-yr, I wore a cocktail dress (above the knee) and DH wore a suit.

:teeth: I'm getting a good visual. It would be just perfect if he could break out into a nice rendition of "Stray Cat Strut" just like Brian Setzer. Smooth...:smooth:

That is too funny, TOV. :smooth:

Reminds me of this picture I took a few years back at DL at the swing dance pavillion. What neat music and dancing.......

i found this on the www

DAY or EVENING INFORMAL (Don't think casual!) also COCKTAIL, or BUSINESS ATTIRE: This requires a business suit, necktie, lace-up shoes, and for evening occasions a non-button-down collar dress shirt. Make certain that the person sending out the invitations really means informal and not casual since this is a common misconception!

No khakis or dockers. If not a suit, a sport coat and dress slacks. A tie may or may not be necessary, depending on the shirt. If you are dolled up in the perfect little black dress, you want him to look "dressed up" too.

I personally think a zoot suit would be way more fun than a regular suit and tie, or khakis and a collared shirt.

Suit and tie, I think. A nice black suit looks good in every nice atmophere =)

Boy, do I LOVE a man in a black suit. =)

Seriously, if it were me, I would have him go with pants, shirt and jacket. A suit might be too much. I suspect they are just trying to say " don't show up in jeans and an old too tight school sweatshirt".
