Would The Weakening Pound Make You Cancel?

I wouldn't cancel. We got hit by the weakening sterling/euro exchange rate when at DLRP last summer ~ I'd booked our hotel in euros and ended up having to pay an extra £30 a night so nearly an extra £300 for accommodation. We were just careful with our spends, maybe only two cocktails a night instead of three :rotfl: and actually ended up with quite a bit left over in the holiday kitty.

The weakening pound wouldn't prevent me from booking a further holiday either provided I could afford it.

It would never stop me. We went to DLRP for christmas and we really noticed how much more expensive things were. We decided that we wouldn't let it spoil our holiday and just bought a few less trinkets than usual.

We are planning to go to Orlando in August this year so I am prepared for things to be a little dearer than usual. I'll still book the character meals, but I usually eat offsite a lot at places like Ponderosa and IHOP so I don't think budgeting will be too different.

Fingers crossed the Dollar rises before then:)

I love Elaine's compromise - two cocktails rather than three :rotfl2:

We are still going as our flights are non refundable so I'm not losing the money from that!

However we won't have very much spending money so shopping will be very much curtailed and we have booked hotels that bare a lot cheaper than the ones I had wanted to.

I don't really mind, as we are still going and are very lucky in that respect.

When we first went to WDW as a family in '02 the rate was about $1.45 so I am telling myself it's not that much worse than that...... yet.

It's so disheartening when you watch the news and the pound drops again against the dollar. I think though, that if you are lucky enough to either be paid in dollars(wish I was lol) or you have booked most things in £'s then the only difference you are going to see is the price at restaurants. I am lucky in that we are going to a villa this time and we will have to do as others have suggested, eat out less.
I told DH I was worried about the cost, but he said don't worry Liesa, we have the villa, we have the car and 21 day tickets to disney, we just need food money and lots of time together :grouphug: love him!

Wouldn't cancel after booking BUT the £ along with diminishing investments has stopping me booking.

So glad I booked 16 nights at OKW with free dining. £91/night for 3 of us seems a bargain now. We would almost spend that on food with the current exchange rate.

I quite agree, this was probably the best deal ever to come out on Disneys UK website. I think it arised because they normally fix their pound rate against the Dollar on an annual basis. (recently this has been moved more frequently due to massive falls in the £).
Before becoming a DVC member I always checked both the UK and USA disney websites for hotel prices. There has been times in the past where I have found the USA site to be much cheaper than the UK one. They used to put on the website their £ to the $ conversion rate.
Even though I am a DVC owner the rate was so good I booked 14 nights in a 1 bedroom for just myself and DW with Dining plan and 14 day ultimate tickets for only £2134.
If booked on points these rooms are double the points of a studio and have full kitchen (that we will not even touch), washer and dryer, separate shower, separate bedroom with king bed and over sized whirlpool bath.
So I suppose we have paid £152.42 per night including dining plan and tickets for a room with a rack rate of $390 per night. :hyper:

I would never cancel, we have been when it was 1.44 and still managed to have a great holiday. Hopefully it might improve.:wave2:

It's the budgeting side that has caused us a problem this time round. We budgeted everything at 1.98/£ and knew we could afford the wedding and the trip. Now it is really stinging us, but we will be ok.

The total cost is around $13,000 and when you look at the difference in exchange rate it ads up to a fair bit - about £3000 extra - without spending money. That includes taking out a week at CBR when the exchange rate started plummeting.

For us it just means paying more for the things we committed to and cutting back on spending money. Oh, and tapping into the Bank of Parents too!

Just found this interesting snippett in This article.

The pound – is it all over?

Unlikely. Goldman Sachs last week told its clients to stick with sterling, which it expects to bounce back quite soon.

Hopefully a bright spot on the horizon! Better get here by May though.

I am still hoping the currency expert they had on sky news was correct. He expected £ to hit a low in the 1st quarter of 2009 at around $1.35 then a recovery in the 2nd quarter upto $1.55 or even $1.60. Going to be a struggle to get back up there IMO.

I hope so. It's gone up to 1.3675 with fairfx so hopefully it'll continue slowly going up.

I've been holding off putting money on it in case it goes up (back when it was 1.75 and I thought that was bad!) which was a mistake, but now I think I should wait until at least the summer now.

I am going to wait until just before we go too, I can't see it getting much better in the summer and maybe as autumn comes it might get to 1.60 that would be nice hehehehe
