I dont want to make anyone angry but I have wondered about something for years so I am just going to come right out and ask!!! Why should Florida residents get additional discounts for Disney and DCL??? It makes no sense to me - Floridians do not have the extra expense of airfare, etc that the guests that travel for hours experience. I am just curious - please dont anyone get angry!:confused3

I believe it has something to do with Disney being in Florida and is one of the largest employers in the State.

I know I probably have the wording right but it is something to that effect.

I've wondered this, too. We don't get any discounts on anything in my state.
No discounts for Myrtle Beach, zoos, etc.

I'm not sure how early the discount rates get published but I know my BIL is on a TA's call list whenever he has good rates at the last minute.
BIL can be at PC in an hour and can get some excellent rates on 3 day cruises. He's never done a Disney cruise but he can get on Carnival for around $250 pp or less. So he'll get called the day before, schedule time off of work real fast and then hit the highway with the family.

That's something we could never do just based on travel time. As I don't live in FL, I've never noticed how early they publish the dates. :confused3

they should do roving discounts to all states and provinces........

Lots of places offer "resident" discounts, not just Disney. Our local waterpark gives discounts on resident passes, and I've been other places while traveling that offer resident discounts that are not available to me.

From a marketing standpoint, when they need to fill up a ship, it would be a bad move on Disney's part not to offer these discounts to a specific group. (Right now the military often gets the best deals, which I think is awesome.) If everyone had access to them, many would wait until the last minute to book, or DCL would have to discount everyone's cabin on the ship when they reduced rates. Not too feasible. As far as why they picked FL residents, I guess it makes more sense than say, Nebraska residents, lol. I also always wondered if maybe it's because they have traditionally been released fairly close to sailing and residents are close enough to easily take advantage. Not sure if that's anywhere near the truth, though.

I would like to see a discount for 2 adults traveling, not from Florida, and with no kids!

I don't know, but it makes me want to move to Florida!

This is just my opinion, so take it for what its worth.

They offer the FL discounts because we live so close to the parks. We can go twice as much as others can. Ive lived in FL for about a year now, and Ive been 10 times so far to the various disney parks and attractions. And if you look at my tickers below, I plan on going allot more in the near future. Fl residents can go every weekend if they wanted. The FL residents rates fluctuate and is a teaser to just get people in the gates/on board the ship. We can go whenever we want so they know they can make money off of us anytime.

Heck, I just had dinner at DTD on Sunday. They have a better chance of making the money back off someone who lives close by, then off someone who only plans to visit once.

Does that make sense?

It's to pay us back for having to deal with tourists all the time! :rotfl:

Seriously, I think it's because we are the most likely to fill ships and theme parks on short notice since it doesn't require much advance travel planning when you're local.

Disney has a discounted yearly pass for Southern California residents, it has a ton of blackout dates and is restricted to some zipcodes. I live in the wrong zip code so I can't take advantage of it.
I agree that it is a way to fill up last minute space that otherwise might not be booked, but I understand your frustration.

From what I have seen the discount rates usually are released about 60-90 days out.

One other reason I thought of is Fl residents more than likely will not need air so DCL would not have to budget that in/deal with the hassle of setting that up.

A lot of places give discounts to locals. We live in Sevier County, TN and get all kinds of discounts to restaurants, shows and Dollywood. And we do put up with the tourists who we love unless they are driving on our secret short-cut back roads.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

:confused3 I believe in 2005 when the Magic was on the west coast they still offered Florida residents discounts to fill the Magic a few times :confused3

Maybe because the people who make the decisions about this sort of thing live in Orlando.

It is because it is really easy to go for us. *********. But I can also travel in three weeks because I don't have to get plane deals and so on. I also bought season passes to the parks because I can go a couple of times a month. I even stay at the resorts a few times a year and I only live 45 min away.

I think your wording is very close. I live here in central FL and Disney I believe likes being a good neighbor and they certainly are. Disney does an awful lot for the community besides offering residents discounts. Disney isn't the only theme park that offers residents discounts. All of the parks do.

maybe as a thank you for all the taxes they pay in FL ;) ...I think they should rotate discounts by state and see where they get the most responses from and do something quarterly for other states too!:confused3

I think it is to help fill the gaps during the off-peak times. I believe that applies to both the theme parks and cruises. Disney is not the only company that offers FL resident rates. Other theme parks (Busch Gardens, Sea World, etc.) as well as other cruise lines offer FL resident rates as well. We can't get the FL resident discount for cruises on all cruises, just certain ones at certain times of the year.

Way to open old wounds. I'm pretty sure I still have scars from the attack I got after questioning why FL resident rates and not CA resident rates if the goal was to fill spots with last minute travelers on the cruises departing from CA.

Let's just say some folks who responded felt very strongly about their exclusive discounts and didn't care to share. And I wasn't even a CA resident back then... just asking the question.
