Would one of you Nascar fans please explain....

How in the heck Gordon won today?!?! I'm just now learning about Nascar...but how in the world was that fair today? I mean they were in a caution, so that means they can't advance their position, right? So how is this a fair win? Or am I completely wrong on all of that?

Up until last year, drivers could race back to the caution flag (waving at start/finish). The first place car was declared at the start/finish line. Last year, when Dale Jarrett's car, for whatever reason, was left sitting in the middle of traffic heading out of turn 4 toward the start/finish drivers buzzed right by him. It was very dangerous, so NASCAR finally implented the current rule that the positions are locked when the caution is brought out.

Gordon, according to NASCAR. was leading the Talledega race today when the caution came out for #25 Brian Vickers' spin. It also fell within 5 laps of the finish, so NASCAR didn't wave the red flag to stop the race. There wouldn't have been enough time to (safely) restart the race under green flag conditions.

When the caution flag comes out they freeze the field. At that time today Gordon was in the lead. Since the race wasn't restarted (it ended under caution) the leader at the time, Gordon is the winner.

As much as it stinks Gordon won because when the caution was called NASCAR said he was ahead of Junior. With only 4 laps to go the say they donot have enough time to get the field back in the right order and start the race again to finish under green. Do I agree no! I think it sucks! LOL I love Junior and this ruined my whole day. If they would have finished under green (the green flag) Junior would have won.

Well I thank you all for the explanations! I think it sucks, but then again they really don't care about my oppinion. What I last seen was Jr. ahead but I turned my head and BAM! there was a caution. When I seen them wave the white flag I was so confused! Thanks again!!

Sounds like I missed a doozy. I think I remember ToriLammy saying it was her birthday so I think that must be why Gordon squeaked Jr. out of the win .

The only time I get to bet on a winner in Las Vegas (Junior) Gordon has to go and spoil it on me. I'm still not convinced that Jeffy Boy was in front when the yellow was displayed! Fox had no clear shot of it and it looked as if JR. was in the process of passing. It's not when the car spins but when the caution is declared. Oh well, I lose that bet but Junior gains a heck of a lot in points. Anyway, I also bet the FLYERS to win the Stanley Cup and they just beat the Maple Leafs AGAIN tonight!!! I'll make my money up that way!!

Was it last week you were mulching and missed the race? You need to stop doing things on Sunday (other than Church) and devote the day to watching the race It was a doozy and while I can't say I'm unhappy about the winner, I can say that I wish they had restarted the race and let JR and Jeff battle it out. I truly belive Gordon still would have won because yes, it was my birthday yesterday! I think the birthday fairies and the Racing gnomes conspired to give Jeff the win for two reasons, 1) he was totally ripped off last week at Martiansville and 2) it was my birthday Crazy I know but what can I say.

And as a Former Philiadelphian I'll add GO FLYERS also!

It was a fabulous race. The best race so far this year. I wanted Jr to win too. But he aint upset about 2nd place. I'm not neccessarily upset about 2nd place. I AM upset that the finish was undfer caution. If not for Brian's spin out, i have absolutely no doubt that it would have been Jr. and Jeff and maybe 1 other car in a shoot out for the checkered flag. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for a photo-finish. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Man did i yell at brian. I think i yelled for half an hour.

I just knew somebody was gonna ruin it for me. I knew it. Once again, my fantasy league team is in the crapper.

Thank-you....I'm actually surprised to find myself liking it. My SO is a Newman fan all the way so he's already picked my favorite for me! LOL! I just think he's cute !! I'm learning slowly but surely.
Oh one other question....I noticed that the #4 car didn't have a sponsor on the hood...can someone explain that to me?
I would be asking my SO all these questions but he went to Talledega! I would've gone but I have children and I've heard it gets extremely wild there and I wouldn't want them in that.

Unsponsored cars are ones that aren't receiving money from a confirmed sponsor (like Alltel or Budweiser)- there are quite a few this year. They are racing on their own dime, hoping to do well enough to attract a full time sponsor to help with their expenses.

NASCAR can be really confusing to a newcomer but a great site that will help you is http://jayski.thatsracin.com/
