If you found this right up against your front door?!!!

I'm trying to get him out of there with a VERY LONG STICK and he's trying his best to bite me.... over and over and over. Wow, what a tremendous strike zone they have. He was lunging himself (or herself as the case may be) at least 3 feet or more.

Here he/she is curled up ready to make a move.

Finally got him out of there and he went under a palm to sulk.

Sorry these are a bit blurred but I think my hands were shaking. This is one of the few times a snake has made me nervous.

I'll be going out thru the garage for a while. ACK! If I had opened the front door, the stupid thing would most likely be in my house right now. :scared1:

:thumbsup2 You are one brave cookie! When I was little there wer gigantic black snakes on my grandma's farm. We had to check the outhouse for them!!!

Those were great pics, even with your hands shaking!

It makes me nervous just seeing the pictures! I can't believe you took the time to take pictures...I would so not be around it at all!

OH MY GOD!!!!! I would have passed out or run screaming! I hate snakes and am deathly afraid. How the heck could you even take pictures?

You need to say more than just wildlife. :scared1:

Holy crap, that thing could stay there. I would just lock myself up in the house.

My co-worker just looked at this and said that this is an indigo snake (prolific in Florida, I think). He said they are not poisonous and they are a "beautiful snake." Eeeekkkk.. Sorry, it would freak me out.

Yikes!! I would have freaked out. Glad you got it out!!

That would have been the end of it for me. I would be petrified. :moped: :moped:

probably would have picked him up and moved him..Cool snake.
But then I have a 6 foot boa constrictor in the house

How did you discover it before you opened the door? Do you have to peek out of your windows when you live in Florida before you open your doors?

Gators knocking on doors. Huge snakes sitting outside your door. Man looks like it isn't safe to open your door. How often does something like this happen?

:scared1:

Your pictures remind me of when we lived in Tampa and our house had a low picture window right in front. Once I was inside the house and I could see a snake similar to yours on the window sill of that window trying to climb UP the window. I was in the house running around screaming!!

Recently we had a similar snake in our garden at our house in Boca and my Dh chased it into a ficus bush where it climbed up the bush and continued to lunge out at Dh. :scared:

My DH saw two smaller ones out front and I had gotten my camera and headed out thru the garage hoping not to scare them. The other two were gone by the time I got out there so I was going to enter the house thru the front door. I came around the corner and saw that!

Yeah, I squealed like a little girl. :rotfl: Once I got over my shock, I thought it was pretty cool and took those photos. I didn't think it was all that cool when it was trying to strike at me though.

Interesting on the Indigo info. I've been calling these Black Racers. I'm still pretty sure it was a Black Racer because it was doing this.
Sometimes a black racer will imitate a rattlesnake by shaking its tail among dry leaves.
and that's a known trait of that species.

I've seen this type of snake at least 4 different times including today. I've also seen two large garter snakes.

It's a jungle down here! ;)

My gawwwwd! I'm doing that now!!!
And I'm one of those dopes who wants to move to Florida!!!
Looking at these pics I can only think that I must be out of my mind!!!

How the heck did you manage to take pictures??

I wouldn't be posting on the DIS, I'd be at the store replacing my grey pants that I just turned brown.

I remember walking around the lake on campus during law school, and coming around a curve in the path, surprising a sidewinder coming out of the grass. Now, you're going to tell me snakes can't jump. But I'm telling you, I jumped high, and he jumped higher, and we both sped off our separate ways.

"When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled . . . "

As Indiana Jones said, "I hate snakes."

We live right on a lake, so we get snakes right up by the house pretty frequently. Last summer, about a week after we moved in, I opened our kitchen door and almost stepped right out on a huge black snake that was curled up on our welcome mat! I jumped back in and slammed the door and poor DH had to get stick and toss the critter off into the woods. We joked that he was from the neigborhood welcoming committee, but he sure didn't have a cake or anything with him!

Now that we have two big dogs, we don't get as many in the yard as we used to.

Thanks for the heads up about all the snakes in FL. I have been bugging my dh to consider moving to that area, if not now, then once we retire. He is against it so now I guess I won't push too hard. :lmao:

I think I'd rather have an alligator at my door than a snake. They just creep me out.

I, too, have had an encounter with a black racer.

I remember when I was in high school I went out to get something in my car, and a black racer was sitting on the porch. He took off into the elephant ear plant, and I jumped up on the bench, neither of us took our eyes off each other.

I'm sure it was a sight, with me standing on the bench and screaming, but dang it, it was a SNAKE.

oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!! I am dying here, and am not there to see it! The pics are enough!!!!
