Would it be awful to take kids our of school twice in a school year to go to WDW??

I think to each his own. Whatever works for your children and their school should work for you. Every state is different as far as attendance policy. If their teachers are notified ahead of time the will usually give you some work for on the plane or at night when setteling down. As far as a trip to the world w/out the kids, it's a tough call. I know my DH and I were thinking about the same thing. I always start by saying yes and then the predicted dissappointment sets in. I always feel bad when I see something that my kids would love and they are not there to experience it. Oh, well as you I don't know if I could do WDW without the kids? I know I was of no help but atleast you know your not alone.

Life is short! Missing 5-10 days a year probably won't mean much over the course of a school year. All my DD teachers want her to go. One teacher said "I took mine out a few times. Keep taking her out, even in middle & high school... its a great experience for them." We know have to fill out a paper for the state but we can take them out for up to 10 days for 'educational' trips. Her Disney loving principal says Disney qualifies for that!
My daughter is an honor student as well, so what's a few days? I think those days will be remembered a lot more than that week of school! Actually in 6 years (K-5) of school she has only had 1.5 sick days and bunches of 'Disney Days'!

I can't go in the summer because of my seasonal business so we go in Nov. I wish our school system was year round so we wouldn't have to miss. If some thing bad was to happen to me, she's still have the memories. Those few homework papers wouldn't mean nearly as much.

I was taken out of school for a few trips (over 25 years ago!) and remember them well! Probably better than what I did in any single week at school! Didn't hurt my grades any as I graduated an honor student. Great one on one time with my father, too. Special memories!

I aggree with Cathy59, there is more to life than work and school! Enjoy it! You never know when the fun is about to end. They do grow up!!!!!

I won't be taking my kids out of school any more. Oldest ds is in 7th grade, and grades this year and 1st trimester of 8th are what the private high schools look at when deciding on acceptance.

My son wouldn't be allowed to make up his tests and quizzes if he's out a week on vacation.

Personally, I think anything before 4th grade isn't a big deal, if your child isn't really struggling in school, and most likely it's okay in 4th and 5th, especially if you plan carefully.

Once you hit junior high/high school, things can be very different. It may work for you to pull your kids, but in other schools/districts, it may not be an option AT ALL.

DS is returning to school today after being out 5day last wk for our recent WDW vaca. We also took him out for a wk the past 3yrs.
Im in the process of booking our WDW vaca for next yr. Im thinking of trying late Aug for both DS & myself so he wont need to miss any days during 8th grade.
He is an A/B student and never had a problem with any teachers, work, etc.

One of the principals at my son's middle school is at WDW with her son right now. Her son is early elementry. This was a 4 day week for us so they missed 4 days of school. We had decided to no longer take DS out once he hit middle school but after her ENCOURANGING us we think we might do a trip this same week next year. We too had taken him out all through elementry but said no way to middle school. I am begaining to see that those family trips might be even more important in middle school than they are when the kids are younger.
