Would DVC be worth it for us?

I have been reading through all the posts trying to gather info and opinions and my eyes are starting to get blurry.

We just returned from our first Disney vacation this past Saturday, we briefly spoke to a rep at the DVC booth at ASM. We never got a chance to go on a tour as we were meeting up with some out of town friends.

So far everything I read looks good, my kids are 6 and 8 so they have quite a few good Disney years left in them. We just stayed at ASM and although it served its purpose for our first trip to Disney as we were hardly ever in the room, I would never stay there again.

We are a family of 4 and would probably go on a small Sun-Thurs vac every other year around the end of January and a larger vacation on the opposite years, same time at the end of January but maybe more like 10 days, possibly using 2 rooms on the 10 day vacations so we can bring other family members down.

Would a 150 pt. package be enough to cover that, should we get more, is doing DVC worth it for us.

you should probably click on the dvc point charts at the top of this page so that you can look at your dates of travel and the number of points at each resort that correspond to those travel dates - sounds to me like you would need more than 150 points - 'tho you could always rent points from a member if/when you were short some for a trip.

From what I've read you stayed at the All Star Music? DVC resorts compare better to the deluxe accomodations Disney offers as far as cost comparisons go. But about the 150 point contract it may be a good start.....the week in which you just traveled would have been 103 points at SSR, figuring a 7 night stay. In this situation, the following year you be able to bank the remaining 47 points to the current 150. So the following year you would have 197 points available to use. This may not be enough for a big trip for 10 days. At the top of your screen you will see a link called DVC point charts...play around with this and see where this may bring you. The way I figured what to buy is that I knew I would like to stay in a 1 bedroom at BWV during school vacation or xmas.....so we bought points based on that. Any residue points I will either bank to get bigger accomodations the following year or transfer/rent them.

I would definitively say.... maybe.

If you are planning to go every year and want to stay in better accommodations than the Allstar resorts, then it could be right for you. There are many things to consider, future trends in your vacationing, your financial situation, etc.

As for the number of points, that would completely depend on the size accommdations you wanted. If you were wanting to stay in a studio for those times, then yes, 150 pts wouldn't be a bad start. You could stay at SSR in a studio for 5 nights for 55 pts. You could bank the remaining 95 pts to use the next year. That would give you 245 pts to use for the next trip. For 10 nights (assuming you didn't move), you could get a 1BR at SSR for 242 pts. To get 2 studios using those 245 pts, you'd have to try and stay at OKW or BW(Std View) because OKW would be 104 pts per studio and BWst would be 112.

So, would it be doable with 150 points... yes.... but that would greatly depend on what would be more realistic for you and your family.

Thanx for the info, I need to talk it over with my family. DH liked the idea of it, he was not thrilled at all with ASM, it served its purpose for this vacation but future vacations will be more relaxed and more room time involved.

Maybe I could get the granparents to chip in for the extra points for the every other year bigger vacations.

It's great if you're looking to "move up" to nicer accommodations. But that quickly becomes addictive, LOL! At first your studio will seem great compared to the All Stars. But then, one day, you'll splurge and spend the extra points on a 1-bedroom...and then you'll never be able to go back to a studio again!

So, while I second (or third, or whatever number I am by now) the opinion that 150 points would be a good workable start, just know that you may want to buy more points, or at least consider that eventually you may find you want more. Look carefully at the "DVC Point Charts" link above to decide how many points you will use each year. Remember that however many points you buy is what you receive each year. Subject to certain restrictions, any points you don't use in one year may be banked forward into the next year, and if you need more points than you have in a year, you may borrow them from the next year. You can also "rent" points from another person's contract (ususally very reasonably--like for about $10 per point) by having them transfer however many you need into your account for that year.

You might also consider buying a resale contract (click on the "DVC Resales" link above) where you may be able to buy more points at a lower cost.
