I've been thinking of getting a IPod..maybe. I like to listen to books on CD when I take the train, but the last time I did this the cd player skipped so bad at every bump it didn't work out at all. So..I was wondering if IPods work well for this? Can you just pay to download books at I Tunes or somewhere? If this is a good use for an IPod..what style/etc would I need? I work at a store that sells them (second job) and you can sell used products back (books, CDs, DVDs) so I thought it would be easy to just sell back old stuff, get it on a gift card and then get a 'free' IPod. Suggestions?

Yes, you can easily use an iPod for audio books. You just download them into iTunes and then load them onto the iPod. Once you have listened to them, you can delete them from your playlist. You can either download books or if you have the CDs, you can add those to your library.
I would get at least a Nano. A Touch is nice, but if you aren't going to use it for playing games, surfing the net, etc. then you won't need to spend more $ on it.

Yes you can buy audiobooks right on the iTunes site. Other mp3 players would also be able to do this, so if you don't really care about having an iPod, you can most likely find a cheaper mp3 player.

As to size, I don't know because I don't have any audiobooks, so I don't know how big those files are.

My library also allows you to "borrow" ipod audio books. They have a huge selection.

Applestore.com had some refurbed 8gb 5th generations right now for 99.99 with free shipping.

I commute 3.5 hours total every day -- audiobooks are wonderful! Our library has audio downloads (check your website) which are good for up to 14 days -- convertible to iPod.

Also, my library has books on CD that you can upload to iTunes and then your iPod. For copyright purposes, you should delete them from your iPod on the due date.

We don't have cable, so we use our iPods for video as well -- DS and I each have 160GB -- mine's nearly full because of video. DD11 just got a Touch for Christmas (upgraded from Nano) -- I'm not really impressed and prefer more space to a touch screen and Internet access. DS just switched back to classic after having a Touch.

I use my iPhone for audiobooks and go through them like water.

I am a member at audible.com and I pay $230ish for 25 "credits", almost all books are one credit, so it's a good deal. I listen to a book a week this way.....

Love audiobooks.....sometimes the narration is so good it just brings the books to life!

I'm actually listening to a book now that I loved as a kid..."Alas Babylon"....really good old book.

Wow..good to know! So the Touch is a newer thing and really not needed? a Nono would work? So confused on all that..so..I can use my computer to upload my own stuff to ITunes and then download it into the player? I hate being a newbie at stuff....

Bouncing/bumps don't affect mp3 players the way they do CDs....in fact, you can job while wearing an mp3 player and not skip a note.

Even though you can get a good deal on an ipod at work....do a little research on ipod brand vs just an "mp3 player". I had an ipod for years and hated the interface, but well, for a lot of years that was all that was out there and reliable. Mp3 has come a long way since those days. And you can usually find mp3 players with more memory and features for a lot less than the branded Ipod. Also, if you only plan to use it for music and audiobooks, and not for video, then save a little money and don't get the video option.

Not sure if it's still an issue, but there was an ipod out called "shuffle" or something like that, that does exactly what it says....shuffles your playlist. NOT good for audio books, lol.

We borrow audio books from the library, download them to mp3 player and listen to them in the car, house or anywhere we want. No buying, no selling, and no need to use itunes to get it on your player!

The touch isn't that new.. close to two years old or more. In Itunes world, the first generation of Itouch is a dinosaur. A Nano would work for what you need.

We also carry the Zune/something like that at work. I thought you needed a branded IPod to be able to access the most stuff..through ITunes..are there other places that have as much content? More confused now ..we also carry COBY mp3s but overall I have seen that Coby sucks so won't go down that road...

I agree that if you just want to use your iPod for audiobooks, you don't need to spend the money for an iPod Touch. A cheaper iPod model will do the job.

That's what I use my Ipod for audio books and podcasts. We have access to three public libraries and can check out actual books on CD or download the audio from the libraries website. I read several books a week just by listening to them while I do things. In the summer, I love to garden and be outside, so I go through so many books. I just love it.:thumbsup2
