We really want a Treehouse villa next May starting on the 26th. That will be Memorial Day weekend. We only want thru the the 3 rd of June....will be leaving on a Disney cruise. It will only include one weekend night. I will be borrowing these points from the next year which starts in September. So, in essence i would only be able to " walk" 5 days because I don't want to borrow more points than I will need----240 points. Would it help at all to walk it?

I'm confused. A 5/26/2011 check in with a check out of 6/3/2011 is an 8 night reservation and will absolutely include two weekend nights. If you clarify, we can better advise.

Generally, it is not necessary to walk for late May early June reservations even though the Memorial Holiday is included. THV might be an exception if you are arriving in the middle of the week. If you will arrive on a Friday or Saturday and will call as soon as the window opens at 9 am Eastern, I would not bother walking.

I am so sorry!! Too many dates. It is May 28th...a saturday check-in and checking out on June 3...Friday. My concern is definately with getting the THV.

Since you are arriving on the Saturday and will call as soon as your window opens, I do not see that it is necessary to walk, even though you want a THV.

If you do, the earliest I would start is for the Friday before, 5/27/11. On the day your window opens for 5/27, call & reserve as many nights as you can without going over the 240 points you need for the "end up with" reservation. Then call back the next day to cancel the Friday night and add the rest of the nights you need. (You don't need to reserve 7 nights to walk a reservation as long as you can get a reservation that begins prior to your first desired night)

Assuming you get at least a 2 night reservation starting on Friday, 5/27/11, and call back the next day to do the rest of it, you will not have a problem getting the 6 nights you need without borrowing more than you need for the actual reservation.

Carol, that is good to know. For some reason, and I remember reading it on the boards (even though I realize incorrect advice is sometimes given) that walking was of no use unless you did 7 nights.
So now I am understanding that even if you did only a five night reservation, for example, as long as it was prior to your "actual" date wanted, that you could still walk a reservation. If so, then this could eliminate my need for borrowing since the reservation that I really want crosses my use June use year.
Since I thought I had to have a 7 night reservation(to serve walking purposes), I ended up borrowing points from the next year to secure a 7 night and figured I would just end up using the borrowed points (for 2 nights).

Would this have worked if I started over with a five night reservation and as I crossed into my new use year, then adding additional nights--to keep from borrowing those earlier? Thanks.

To successfully "walk", you only need to secure a 2 night reservation. Let's use a a simple example to help clarify:

Suppose that there are exactly 5 studios at DVC Resort A. To make the example simpler, we will assume that all 5 studios are available when the 11 month window opens. Let's assume there are 5 members who want to begin their stays on 1/1 and call on 2/1 as soon as MS opens.

So on 2/1, 3 people call and make 7 night reservations, 1 person makes a 5 night reservation and 1 person makes a 2 night reservation.

So we now have:

3 members who will check in on 1/1 and out on 1/8 (7 nights)
1 member who will check in on 1/1 and out on 1/6 (5 nights)
1 member who will check in on 1/1 and out on 1/3 (2 nights)

The next day (2/2), the 11 month window opens for anyone who wants to begin a studio stay at DVC Resort A on 1/2. But there are no studio rooms available - all 5 are taken by the members who made reservations yesterday.

However, if the members who made reservations yesterday want to extend their stay by a night, they are allowed to do so today (2/2) and are guaranteed to be able to do that. (Because no one who doesn't already have a reservation can reserve a studio for 1/3 or later until the 11 month window opens on 2/3).

So walking only requires you to secure the first 2 nights to be successful, as long as you are willing to call daily after securing the 2 night reservation. You don't need to call daily if your first reservation is longer. You just need to call to add nights before the 11 month window opens for the nights you need.

The real challenge is to get that first reservation. That can be tough to do if other people are "walking ahead of you".

Carol's Opinion Follows: :)
As I have said previously, walking is unnecessary almost all of the time. If too many people do it, DVC will just institute new restrictions - and there's no way to stop walking without hurting all of us in other ways.

Everyone who is considering walking should be absolutely sure it is necessary. Too many posters here suggest walking for times of the year and booking categories that are usually available at 7 months. So there is NO PROBLEM getting them at 11 months and no need to walk. Walking in those cases just wastes time and creates problems for other members.

Thanks so much Carol for your detailed explanation. So to recap, if I get a reservation secured for May 23-30 (departing on the 30th) and the actual date that I want the reservation to begin is May 30, then I don't have to call to add days before May 29, correct? And by the way, it is a holiday weekend for a concierge room.

I'm inexperienced in the nuances of DVC reservations. Can someone explain what 'walking' a DVC reservation means or point me to somewhere that explains it. Thanks in advance!

Not quite. You are mixing up the reservation nights with the days you call to make the reservation.

Assuming you get the reservation for 5/23/11 - 5/30/11 when you call MS on 6/23/10, the earliest anyone can call to get a reservation that begins on 5/30/11 is 6/30/2010. So you would need to call no later than 6/29/2010 to add the night of 5/30/11 to the reservation.

Note that you might have to keep at least the night of 5/29/11 reserved on that call (and only cancel the 1st 6 nights). I don't think you can cancel all 7 nights on the call you make on 6/29/11 and still be allowed to reserve the night of 5/30/2011, because that would be a whole new reservation. If you try to cancel all 7 and add the night of 5/30/2011, the CM will probably tell you to call on 6/30/2011 just like everyone else.

Good luck Hope you get the concierge reservation.

Thank you so much for all of your advice. Normally I don't really care where we end up staying, but with this trip matters more. We will have my family of 4, a set of grandparents, and BIL/SIL and niece...so 9 total. So we really would like as I don't think that I have the points for AKV/BLT 2 bedroom.

Thanks again Carol. I meant to type June 29 instead of May 29, so I think I understand now.
