Worst vacation/dayout you have been on due to travel issues?

Last one the car broke down

June 28th this year ....Aer Lingus went on strike.....left me and the Mrs. stranded in Sorrento, Italy (I know, how could this be the worst )..... had to scramble for a flight home....got the last 2 seats on AA to Philly....cost me an extra $2,429 just to get back ....to make that day worse, my flight insurance is fighting me over the reimbursement....it's been a month and they have not responded to my online claim or to any phone calls....

I have 2 stories.

First one was when I was 18. We dropped my brother off at the HS. After a Mass and reception (he was driving from PA to Mexico City for a 6 week service project) we started driving to WDW. It was my parents, me and my 2 sisters. Around 3:30 a.m., Mom was driving and said that we needed to find a gas station. Dad said that we still had plenty of gas even though the gauge was showing almost empty. We coasted to the side of the road and waited until after six for a trucker to stop and help us. We've never let Dad live that one down. This was WAY before cell phones and we weren't on a major interstate to avoid traffic... yes... in the middle of the night.

Second was when my DH and I were taking the kids to Punta Cana. We got to PHL around 6 - 6:30 for an 8:30 flight. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and we were excited to take off.

Around 8, a woman sits down next to us and told her husband that there was a delay. I said that there wasn't a cloud in the sky, what was wrong? There was a problem with the landing gear. They went back and forth all morning about how the part was going to get there from JFK. Finally, they canceled our flight.

We got rebooked at 6:30 pm and had to hang out in the airport all day. This was only going to get us to Miami and the next morning we were bumped to business class for the next leg. The airline put us up in a hotel, but all of the airport hotels were booked. We had to go into the city. We had no bags because they were checked, so we slept in our underwear and brushed our teeth with gum and combed our hair with our fingers.

When we landed, the first thing they do is take your photo. We still have that photo. We were such a wrinkled and unkempt group. Of course one of our bags was missing and wasn't returned to us until the night before we were leaving. The bag arrived with multiple holes and the resort was able to give us duct tape so we could get it home with us. We had a great trip and the story of getting there is legendary.
