Worst Musical Ever???

Le Roi Soleil

Haven't seen the show, but I bought the album and after 6 songs I couldn't stand it anymore.

I'm glad I'm not the first one to say it since I know I'm in the minority on this but I hated Phantom of the Opera when I saw it on Broadway, too! I'm a person who LOVES musicals. I have seen and am a huge fan of Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Wicked (had to have the soundtracks and still can't get enough of them), and a long list of older musicals, but I just don't get this one. None of the music was memorable to me except for "Music of the night" and "All I ask of you" which I had heard before seeing it and I still don't think they are such great songs. There are no upbeat musical numbers. There are no happy or comedic moments. It is just a bizarre, dark and depressing story. I tried watching the movie when it came out to see if I felt any differently about it, but I came away with the same feeling.

If I hadn't seen "Victor/Victoria", this would have been my worst! And for the same reasons you mentioned. I remember complaining about that darkness to my aunt, who goes to shows all the time. You're not alone!

For me, the answer would be "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." I saw in on Broadway with John Stamos...he was ok. Maybe it would have been better if I had seen it with matthew Broderick....but I wasn't impressed.

Well the only 2 I have been to recently are the nutcracker and lion king. I thought they were both equally horrid and hope to never see another show, musical, play or the like again.

First of all, The Nutcracker is a ballet, not a musical, so it can't be put in the mix here.

Secondly, HOW could you not like "The Lion King?!" First of all, it's DISNEY. Secondly, even if you're not a fan of the music or the story, the technical feats that that show has mastered is mind blowing! We saw it on Broadway and loved it! Sorry you did not experience the magic we did.

The worst show I ever saw was one by Andrew Lloyd Webber - Sunset Boulevard! I left in the middle of it, it was that bad.

Starlight Express... and Cats.. just weird.

Grease
Rocky Horror Picture Show

Never saw the stage show of either, but they have been on television dozens of times, and I can't tolerate more than a few minutes. Blech.

The stage version of Rocky is so different than the movie. Its really hard to explain. Yes, the plot is the same, and if you aren't a fan of the plot, well they will both be intolerable.

I've seen the movie thousands of times and the stage show. (was a cast member for a local "theater" group during a midnight movie showing at a now defunct movie theater)

Hard to explain, but the show is different than the movie.

I love J.C. Superstar - but EVERYTHING else by Andrew LOUD Webber is dismal, IMO.

I was almost afraid to open this because the first one I thought of was Cats! I really tried to like it, but it was just awful. I thought I was the only person who hated this show!

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I really really hated Les Miserables! And I love musicals, even the really overblown ones ( I have the Music Man , Oklahoma, and Carousel in my car at all times).

In my brain during Les Mis, I was thinking, "NO! Stop! Yuck! When is over!" and at one point I actually fell asleep!!!

Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde...granted, it was dinner theatre, but this show couldn't be saved by anyone.

Are we talking production or music/lyrics/book?

I once saw a musical called Genius Farm. It was on a pre-Broadway tour and starred Marni Nixon. Although it was nice to see her (as opposed to just hear her in a movie), the play was dreadful, with no memorable music and not much of a story. It never made it to Broadway.

I've seen innumerable high school versions of play I love, which can kill almost anything. (I count those that I was in.)

On Broadway, I thought that the musical version of Big was kind of little. I cover my distaste of Andrew Lloyd Weber by simply not going to see his shows.

I thought Aida was pretty bad, actually. Over-produced, repetitive music.
:guilty: I actually know the producer for the Broadway version.

DH hates Into the Woods. I really didn't like the production we saw of Evita.

I have yet to run into a musical I haven't liked!

Dito. In every production, even if I don't like everything, there are some aspects I do like. In one musical, the music isn't what i hoped, but the costumes are fabulous, or the decor is WAW or the choreography is amazing or...

I am quite sure that id I did go to see Le Roi Soleil, I would have liked it, if not for the music, then for another part.

Also: musicals change when it's a different production. I saw Elisabeth in Vienna and a couple of months later I saw a different production of it in Stuttgart, and they were not at all alike!!

Apparantly, Stage Entertainment has received Disney's "Go" for a different production of Beauty and the Beast, and the production is not like the one on Broadway (and Belle has blond her, YUCK!!!!! Don't mess with the princesses!! It's like giving Mickey white ears!!) lol

"Thou Shalt Not". In theory it should have been good -- songs by Harry Connick, Jr., choreography by Susan Stroman. On stage, it was just plain bad. As the man in front of us said during intermission "This is like a train wreck. It's awful, but you can't look away." Most of the singing in the 2nd act was by someone who died in the first act.

There was a vampire play by Frank Wildhorn (my friend says it was called "Dracula", I don't remember for sure). So bad that I left in the middle.

Both of these closed within a month or two.

The stage version of Meet Me in St Louis is horrid. Movie, fine. Stage, doesn't work.

I saw a really horrid touring production of Rent. I'm not a huge Phantom fan. I much prefer Miss Siagon and LeMis. I kinda liked Starlight Express, ok I liked the Roller Skating. I like the music in Cats. I adore Into the Woods.

I enjoyed The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast but wasn't blown away by either.

I really dislike Phantom of the Opera. I went to see it in Ft Lauderdale about 15yrs ago and it felt like 2hrs of mental torture. I did NOT go see the movie. On the other hand, I LOVE Cats! And Les Mis! and Joseph!

I didn't like this recent one either, but the one with Patty Lupone years ago was fantastic.

Kind of a toss up for me. The Boy From Oz was awful. Hated it. Hugh Jackman was good but the show was just... bewildering. I couldn't figure out what was so significant about Peter Allen's life that it would warrant a Broadway show. Told my friends that I wanted a truck to hit me during intermission so I wouldn't have to be subjected to more of that nonsense.

And Dracula the Musical was absolutely heinous. They changed one of the most famous horror stories of all time into a love story? What? And his minion of sexy vampiresses all flying over the stage. Not spooky, just Cirque du Soleil with fangs.

Oh, and the most recent version of Sweeney Todd. God, that was just ridiculous. The entire cast was on stage at all times, playing various characters AND they were the orchestra as well. Patty Lupone playing a tuba and the triangle. NOT
