Inspired by the Fundraiser thread:

What's the worst fundraiser you've ever had to sell or buy from?

For me, it's that darned wrapping paper. It costs so much - and all people do is rip it and throw it away. I cringe when I see a wrapping paper fundraiser - no matter if DD is selling or someone is asking me to buy it. ;)

ITA on the wrapping paper. I would like to add Niagara Candy ... b/c I know that Grinning Ghost knows all about Niagara Candy! I just think their candy tastes waxy!!!

Adding "Zap-A-Snack", too. $12 for a dozen cookies!? $15 for like 8 cinnamon rolls?! Please. And, I have to bake 'em myself!? They ought to walk themselves to the oven, bake and walk themselves out when they're done and make a cup of coffee to go with 'em. Then, maybe I'd think they were worth the money!

The Daisy Drop (which the HS Athletics Dept. has since dropped)

They would paint squares on the football field and then sell numbered tickets for where Daisy the Cow would drop her "load".

The last year they held it Daisy refused to "drop" and everyone got disgusted and left after several hours of waiting.

Aaahh yes - the old Niagara candy. Isn't it bad enough that the credit union I go to ALWAYS has Niagara candy bars they're trying to hawk. I agree - waxy. I also think Fowler's is waxy.

And Zap A Snack? Ugh! The pizzas aren't bad, but too pricey. The cinnamon rolls - I bought them recently. What a rip off! Cost alot, they had to be microwaved (mushy cinnamon rolls?) and they tasted terrible. I'd rather go to McDonald's, pay my buck and get a great big decent tasting cinnamon roll. And I'm no McDonald's fan. ;)

A local college hockey team does something similar called "Chuck-A-Puck". For $1, you get a numbered hockey puck (they record your name w/the number) and, at intermission, everyone throws their puck out on the ice from their seats. The puck closest to the mascot painted on the middle of the rink gets 50% of the cash brought in. I think that's worth it and it's loads of fun. Might be worth it for your team to paint one central daisy and throw numbered mini-footballs at the daisy instead of waiting for some cow to take a dump!!!!

I bet profits would be up if they had Watson's Sponge Candy (or any Watson's candy) fundraisers!!!! Mmmmmmmm! I'd sure be buying that!!!!

I agree that its the wrapping paper.. I dont mind so much with the cookie dough becaue I'll use it anyway and its convenient since its pre made.. the other stuff I dont mind either because I usually pick things that I can put in a stocking or whatever, but the paper just kills me.. I can get it soooo much cheaper at the store

Me too! They're very good. :)

And if you want to taste the BEST orange chocolate in Western NY, try Mike's on Clinton Street. I'm drooling all over myself just thinking about it. Unfortunately, Mike's is a mom & pop operation, so fundraisers probably wouldn't happen. But man, they are sooooo good....

My son goes to a Mother's Day Out Program at a church and their fundraiser this year was Tupperware, it was way too hard to sell! While I love Tupperware, there are not many items for less than $20.00.

Is Mike's near the Bailey-Clinton market!? Will have to go there -- adore orange chocolate!!! I'm drooling all over myself now, wishing for a piece!!!!

Actually, it's closer to Cheektowaga. Pretty much on the Cheektowaga/Buffalo line. Just a little candy store, but so worth the trip. Around Easter time, they have a line hanging out the door. My grandmother actually used to live 2 doors away from Mike's, and when I was little, it was a big treat to go there.

Since then, I've never given up on them. And I've tried orange chocolate from all over the area. Mike's wins - hands down.

I think the worst one was when our PTA was doing a fundraiser, and most everything (i.e. pizzas) were frozen. Not only was delivery a royal pain, due to needing to keep them frozen. I also became embarrassed after I tasted the stuff - the pizza and garlic bread were just nasty, nasty, nasty. We ended up throwing away more than half of what we purchased. Next year, the company added a "gift" line - I would not let DD sell the pizzas.

Now - there are some sales I do like, and will search for someone...Boy Scout popcorn is great, my niece sells fruit around Christmas as well as Racine Danish Kringle, local Irish Dance groups sell Christmas wreaths. Not to mention right after Christmas - it is time for Girl Scout Cookies - which since DD sells them, I don't have to go to far to find her!

Ahhh...

That would be the HUGE hollow chocolate eggs we had to sell in 7th grade to be able to go on the class trip.

They were about the size of the smaller Nerf footballs.

And the school had us selling them in August. Door-to-door large chocolate egg selling, August in CALIFORNIA?!? Can you say "melted?" It was like 105 + that week.

No one bought any from me or any of my friends. My father ended up just paying my way after I tried for a week.

The really sad thing? My father was the principal of the school. He failed to catch on in time that they wouldn't sell. :rotfl:

We've had some creative fund raisers through the years, so mostly I don't mind them. I guess the worst though is the one at the beginning of the school year. It's wrapping paper, junk candles, tacky ornaments, stuff like that. I usually just give a cash donation though because I hate asking my friends to buy that stuff. I think the school gets more money with the donations too.

The ones I've really liked have been:

Soccer: Marianna subs. I think that's a local one though, but everyone loves their subs and we sell about 50. Last year, they accidentally placed 2 teams orders twice. They had something like 500 extra subs that had to be sold right away. My hubby sold about 60 or 70 of them himself by taking them to his work (he was off) and everyone wanting them for their break. He could have sold more too, but they'd sold them all by the time he got back. The community center would have had to pay that if she couldn't sell them, but they make I think $1.00 off each one, so they got an extra $500.00.

Wrestling: You're given 10 $1.00 50/50 raffle tickets to sell, then you have to bake something to sell the day of the home tournament.

Swimming: You have to go around to area businesses and ask 2 of them to sponsor the swim team. They can give $25 $50 or $100 donations and their business is displayed on banners at swim meets. The businesses don't have to give, but you do have to contact 2.

Basketball: They do the Marianna subs too, but they give you the option of just giving a donation, so that's what we always do. I'm sure we could sell lots, but soccer is enough of that.

Cheerleading: You have to go out on what's called "tag day" and go door to door begging for money. I hate this one too. You then have to sign up to work the concession stand (hate this too), and you have to pay various amounts of money at different times. You have to sell candy bars, and there is another thing they require, but I can't think of what it is right now. IMO, it's a lot!

These have been our favorites.

the worst-anything from the red apple catelog (cuz the company wherehouse is within a 30 minute drive and they do twice a year open to the public sales where you can buy the $45.00 items for $5.00 and the wrapping paper is $1.00 a roll). i just plain hate buying the stuff-i would rather just write a check to the school.

Frozen Pies!!!!! So we sell 25 pies and where the Heck do we store them until we can get them to the people that ordered them!! Selling anything frozen is insane IMO! I don't like any of that crappy chocolate one either I work for a chocolate place and get good stuff, I don't need their fake chocolate stuff!

I absolutely refuse to sell the wrapping paper, too--what was worse this year, not only did I get 2 kids bringing home the PTSA fundraiser, but then the fifth grade had a fundraiser the same time, different company--but more cheesy gift wrap! I didn't let my kids sell either. I'm happy to make a donation or, in my DD10's case, pay for her camping trip on my own (they go in May, it's $80). No way would I hit up relatives with that--it's enough with cub and girl scouts.

I also hate coin drops. We have a light in the center of our (small, rural) town, and people stand out there begging for change. Esp. in summer, we get lake traffic. I find it rude and dangerous. Worse, the fire dept. used to do this, too, which sets a poor example, IMHO. Now it's mostly soccer teams, Lions, etc.--you'd think they'd find something safer, but maybe they get a lot. Still, count my kids out.

I liked the Zap A Snack cookies. I thought the pizza's were just okay, but the kids liked them. I don't really like the tubs of cookie dough but that is what they switched to this year.

I don't know if this is just a local thing but DS and DD used to sell frozen Corbi pizza - yuck.

The BEST fundraiser that DS's new school does is marketday.com. You can order on-line and pick up is once a month. It is groceries. Good quality meats, casserolles, cheese sticks, goldfish crackers. The school makes 10 percent and I spend about 50 bucks a month. The prices are about what I'd pay at the grocery store.

A co-worker was selling Christmas nick-nacks for her sons school. I bought a few items and I was so shocked when they came in. The candle I ordered was no bigger than a tea light? Completely different from the picture. Everything I had ordered was super undersized. A few items I had even bought to be gifts for others, but there was no way I was passing along these little miniatures!
