Worst Accident ever seen at park

Really, this board is starting to sound like urban myths...
I HEARD MICKEY WENT TO A PARTY, PASSED OUT, AND WOKE UP IN A TUB OF ICE WITH HIS KIDNEYS MISSING!!
I know the guy jumping off the Contemporary onto the monorail is true, I read it on the Orlando Sentinel's website.
The girl falling, I saw it and ouch!
We need to lighten this up!
I've almost died once in MK...of boredom....in Hall of Presidents.

Haven't read here about the kid on BTMRR yet. It was on dateline or one of those other shows a yr or so ago. The mother started some legislation or something after the accident.

Anyway ... at the end of the ride they were behind a train that was unloading. When the train stopped her son thought it was time to get off and he stuck his leg out of the car. People in line saw him and started yelling at the mother to get his leg back in. She didn't think they were talking to her because she "knew he was right next to her", so she just turned her head away from them. As the train began to move his foot was crushed between the platform and the train.

As for the site given earlier and some of the stories on here ... many seem to be versions of the same story. In fact if the site given was correct, there have been very few accidents at DL. Too bad they don't have a list for WDW. Anyhow it seems that at least 90% of the accidents are caused by actions of the injurred person.

Morbid fascination.

If I remember correctly it happened early last April when my family was there. We had heard that him & his wife had an argument after a few too many drinks & he went swimming in the lake.

DD (14) and I were sitting on the dock waiting to catch the boat from the GF to MK about an hour before they pulled this guy up. DD was very creeped out by the whole thing.

I heard last year a CM jumped off the Contemporary and plunged to his death on the monorail line...yikes.

We were having dinner at Chef Mickey's when this happened. We were wondering why the monorail wasn't running. We found out later about this incident.

"I once read in a book written to bash Disney that a woman in a watermouse was struck and killed by one of the giant boats that take passengers back and forth from TTC to MK. The captain of the boat put the reverse thrusters on and sucked her into the propellers. The woman's body was found by divers at the bottom of 7 seas lagoon, but WDW officials refused to bring the body up until dark!"

This one I know about and it didn't happen quite the way the book has it. I know a couple of CMs who were very unhappy the way the book portrayed it. First of all, what they left out was that the watermouse crashed into the Ferry, not the other way around. It crashed because the women let her young (like 3 years old) son drive even though she was told it was not allowed. Those ferries can't turn real quick so they couldn't avoid the mouse. Also this happened just a little before dusk, so the divers weren't able to get there before dark...it is not that Disney held off. Of course, that is what the husband claimed in the lawsuit, but it was shown by the receipt that it was close to dusk already.

Disney did settle this (another thing that annoyed my friends) since the young child was traumatized and injured. Disney felt that the grieving husband and child would be more sympathetic to a jury.

What about the time the submarine from "20,000 leagues" sufferred a breech and water came flooding into the whole cabin drowning some (or all?) of those on board.

They shut that ride down right away after that. ...or so I heard.

An interesting procedural regulation by our friends at Disney is that no one ever 'dies' while at Disney. They actually make a point of evacuating people out of disney before they are pronounced dead. Newspapers read-man/woman/child dies on the way to hospital..... They wait until they have left the property to actually pronouncing them dead.

This ran into a bit of a snag with the guy falling through the Contemporary resort, as witnesses report cast members moving the lifeless body assuring the crowd around them that he was 'okay'.

Sad stuff.

ACK! I can't believe I just read this entire thread!

Such horrible events! Although, I must agree with previous posters that most of the *incidents* seemed to have occured because of someones carelessness/stupidity/perception of invincibility (you pick the adjective  ).

I think that Disney goes out of it's way to provide so many safety precautions and information that unfortunately we've become *immune* to it all - and so much goes ignored. Much like the safety information presented on airplanes......

AKASNowWhite,
I absolutely agree with you, with only one known exception (as far as guest tragedies are concerned), all the incidents were because the guest failed to properly observe common sense safety precautions. The exception being the unfortunate people killed at DL by the cleat (sp?) flying from the Columbia Sailing Ship. In most cases, the CM accidents were also caused by CMs taking a shortcut, or being where they should not have been.

Wow, what a fun little thread. :( Is this really on topic?

The worst I saw was probably when I decided to check the old question whether or not there is enough clearance on Space Mountain to ride with your hands up in the air (there is not, and my right middle finger did not look pretty for a couple of days).

The worst I have heard - check out The Disneyland Death Tour at http://www.whatever-dude.com/posts/54.shtml .

The worst accident I ever witnessed at DW? My 6 year old had diahrea in his shorts at test track. Had to throw everything out and bought new clothes at the gift shop.

THanks Kylara for the clarification. I was just explaining it as the book had. I HATED that book!

As for why people are posting and reading such a morbid subject, I read it because I think it is valuable for all of us to be aware that accidents happen even at the "Happiest Place on Earth" and to be cautious and aware.

Isn't that a good message/strategy for visiting any theme park? I often forget that I can be injured or hurt anywhere...even at Disney. With that many people and that much machinery/water/transportation, etc. People are going to get injured or killed once in a while. By using caution, we can reduce the odds that freak accidents like these occur to us.

Now that gave me a good chuckle. :p

And, yes, this thread is sad, morbid, whatever you want to refer to it as, however, it will sure make me remind my 3 DD's the importance of safety and obeying all the safety precautions posted.

I did read this whole thread...some of it I found very interesting.. at any rate, it is not everyone's cup of tea to read about accidents at WDW...so in saying that, it quite clearly in the title explains what the thread is about...if you do not want to read it. do not open it.. Also, please no sarcasm, let's keep it nice here..

I'm quite surprised at the number of negative comments that are appearing here about this thread.
Therefore, I must say that I have to agree with some of the replies, in that i do not believe discussisng this topic is wrong one bit.

Firstly,

a lot of issues are being highlighted, where you would not have thought of the risk they impose before.
This may make you think harder the next time you go on that attraction, and maybe even save your life.

Secondly,

it quite clearly in the title explains what the thread is about...if you do not want to read it. do not open it

Yes, it does, and you are not forced to read any thread.

And Thirdly,

why would someone start a topic like this?

Just as all the other threads on these boards.
It is obviously a topic that people want to talk about and discuss, which can be clearly seen from the number of people who have been bothered to reply.

If you think about it, this thread could be applied to other topics such as dining or resorts, as opposed to just rides.

This would bring up threads such as........(although highly unlikely)

"........The worst restaurant WDW, and why you wouldn't dine there again..............."

or " The worst resort you stayed at, and why you won't be staying again"

etc, etc,

I bet you wouldn't feel so strongly about opening those threads.

Sorry, but IMHO that's the point of these boards - to discuss things, and you don't have to read any thread that you don't feel comfortable with.

When you are dealing with the # of people who go through the turnstiles at WDW you are going to have accidents. I would venture a guess that they are proportionately the same number of accidents at your local grocery store. I agree that most of these are urban legend and that 99% were preventable with the use of common sense.
