My dog Max is almost 6 years old. He's fixed. We just moved two weeks ago to a new place. Max is used to having his own yard to go to the bathroom in, and isn't really fond of other dogs. At this place, he's had to learn to go to the bathroom on his leash. He's pooped a couple of times in the house, but never urinated.

Now today, he went out for a walk, and then 3 hours later, he urinated in the apartment! He didn't even act like he had to go out!

Is this just stress? We also changed his food, could that have something to do with it?? Dogs also lived here before us, and my other dog is in heat.

It could be the food change, it could be stress, or he may be upset that his "home" was taken away.

I switched my dog over to a weight-control formula food last month, and my perfectly trained dog started having "accidents", both kinds. I put accidents in quotes because I believe it was intentional, he doesn't like the food and he was unhappy. I changed him back and now he is fine again. :confused3

My best guess is it's stress related - being in a new home, not used to being on a leash for potty, etc. You might have to re-introduce housetraining to him.

oh boy I don't know. call your local animal hospital and ask them. hope he feels better

You need to retrain him as far as housebreaking goes. Take him out alot until he gets the idea. After that you can schedule his potty breaks.

It's weird though, he was doing fine for two weeks! All of a sudden today, he decides to go in the house, on my brand new rug!!

I'm wondering if the new food is more salty than the other, he drinks more. I know about the diseases that go along with that, but this all started exactly with the new food. If it keeps up for a couple more days, I guess I can have him checked out at the vet.

Ugh, I keep feeling like this move is the worst thing I've ever done.

Hi Viva. It would be my guess that it is stress related. Too many changes all at once, and a sister in heat?? Wow, poor boy. I would try going back to his old food until he gets used to the new place and the new bathroom protocol, then slowly switch his food to the new stuff. Anything close to "normal routine" for him will only help.

Why did you change his food?

If this happened when you changed his food, well I would say it could be the problem or stress????

Who knows? I just had my dog to the vet today for his ears and he was eating his right paw off. Doc thinks he got stung and just started chewing on it and wouldn't stop. Now he has a sore from it. I just had him to the vet for his ears the prior week!!!

These dogs just need to TALK!!!;)

They need to lose some weight, so I changed to a "diet" dog food.

Man, I seem to be making all the wrong decisions lately!

and thanks for all your replies!!

I'll change his food back and watch him. He can't sit still and is panting a lot. And this is a dog who could sleep for hours. My poor little guy, he was a timid dog already!

I knew my cat would be upset with the move, but not the dogs! And of course, the cat is fine, Max is the one freaking out!

thanks again!
