World of Disney NYC - now we have a closing date

I'm new to this thread .. but I'm going to WOD on Friday for one last visit. Anyone else going to be there?

I'm going to go for a farewell visit after the Christmas hoards have dissolved.

We're going this Sunday. I'm so sorry to see the store go, it was such a nice Disney fix. My son is disappointed that he can't meet the characters in their xmas outfits, he loved doing that in other years.

I just went to WoD NYC today at around 4:30pm to "say my goodbyes." Wow, what a scene.

Everything in the place was 75% off. Everything. Even art from the 3rd floor. The place was a madhouse. There was a line outside to get in because it was at capacity. People were carrying WoD bags for blocks around 55th & 5th.

Once I got in, I saw that the place was a shadow of what it was. The shelves were half bare. The usual order was not longer there. There was a ton of Christmas stuff on the first floor, along with various Disney NYC stuff. (If you feel the need to get 50 plush NYPD Mickeys or Statue of Liberty Minnies, go tomorrow. They have boxes and bags of them for sale!)

The 3rd floor was closed off, but some art pieces were brought down to floor #2 and also at 75% off. (I stared at a framed Pirates of Caribbean art for around 5 minutes, but cooler heads prevailed.) There was a cast member there letting everyone know that even the art is 75% off. I sheepishly asked about some of the Big Figs that used to be upstairs; she said that they had around 15 big figs out, and they went within the first hour of opening today.)

I stocked up on Pirates stuff (attraction, not film - shirts for my kids, underwear for my son, and a plush Mickey for me), got a Princess Leia Minnie figurine for my wife, a Cars coloring book, a Mickey T shirt for me, and a Disneyland attraction figurine set. The total full price was over $110 - then he applied the discount. Fabulous.

I just wish I could have gotten there sooner.

If you're nearby and want to find some bargains, stop by before it's all gone. (Lots of Disney Christmas stuff, Disney chocolates and Goofy's Candy stuff, kids shirts - especially for little kids, and Disney NYC plushes. No DVDs or CDs. The kitchenware is fairly gone except for some wine bottle stoppers. Pins have been cleared out. Barely any books (some HSM books and kids activity books were left) but I saw around three or four copies of the Peter & the Starcatchers series.

It's a shame I had to bid farewell to WoD in its current state. I used to go there to find my peace and to feel that pixie dust in this remote Disney Parks island here in the cold city. The end is truly here. It was fun while it lasted.

I went for my final visit last night. I wanted to take some pictures and of course pick up a few things. The store was a MOB scene and was virtually empty. The third floor was closed, which bummed me out, and there were people picking up whatever they could (I guess because it was all 75% off). After taking a few pictures I was going to buy a few things that I came upon and then realize I didn't REALLY want them. I said my goodbyes and left.

One interesting thing was when I spoke to a cast member she told me that the plan was for a different Disney store to be open next year but that it wouldn't carry any park merchandise. She had no idea when it was going to open but she did tell me that some of the cast members were interviewed and will be working in Florida, which I thought was interesting.

Oh well! It's the end of an era for me and MANY others. I look forward to the possibility of a new store but I will definitely miss the NYC World of Disney. I remember when looking for a job recently after my interviews I would go for a walk in the store to forget about my current situation and think about the next possible trip to Disney. I only work to pay bills and go to Disney as most of us do! Ha Ha Ha!

Anyway, looking forward to the new year and the Disneyland trip in April with the DIS team!

Yeah, I think I went just over that "overboard" mark, but not by a lot. (I haven't bought a plush for myself since I got a Figment plush in 1985. I still have it.) Pondering whether it stays or goes on eBay.
