Working on Weight Loss and getting Lean!

I keep thinking I've posted, but then I realize I've just read and not commented!

Tandy - Congratulations on day 1 of school! Sounds like Friday night's event was a lot of fun. Sorry it was so hot. And it's miserable trying to run in the heat and humidity. We're having a really hard time adjusting to this sudden increase in temperature. Most nights when we go out for our track workout or our other midweek run it's at least 90. There's just no easy way to convince yourself that it's not miserable.

Maria - As the daughter of a minister, organized religion is the pits. I watched my parents suffer so many times in so many different churches. And yet I absolutely LOVE my church and my minister now. But I think I come at it from an entirely different perspective too! And I refuse to get totally involved for the same reason. You are incredibly generous to give up the garage. I think that's above and beyond, and deserves a fabulous gift upon their return! I'm having the same sort of project scheduling. One at a time, but they're big. This month it's an annual audit - the first of its kind since we were purchased 18 months ago - so all my time is spent preparing for that. But once it's over, there's nothing else on the horizon. Yet.

Manda - Nice to see you! Your running sounds like it's definitely improving!

I've decided to believe that I'm doing too much too fast, and take the running down a notch. I'm still doing speedwork with the group at the track, but at a much slower pace. I'm seriously considering trying to run MCM at 1/1 intervals - did the math this morning and realized that I can easily meet my goal doing those intervals and running a time that's already almost comfortable to me. By October, it should be a breeze.

Our Galloway program completely revamped the training schedule for the season, and we're doing a lot less mileage on our weekly long runs than we have in the past seasons. Our usual base run was 10 miles, but they're changing that to 8, and 6 on some weekends. The long runs still increase at the normal pace, but on the cutback weeks we'll be taking it much easier. I'm very happy about that, since I'm not completely sure I'm ready to be running the mileage anyway.

In the meantime, I haven't been on the scale since the end of the challenge. Probably don't want to. Annie has been baking, and we went to the grocery store tonight and she's going to take over trying to cook some meals. That will be good - we've been going out entirely too much. But at least I'm running more frequently, so that should be a good thing!

Jackie

Hello ladies. Where is everyone? I hope we hear from you all soon.

Jackie: Maybe staying off the scale is a good thing. I get so obsessed that it's not healthy. Your way is a better way to live. I would not survive if I had someone in my house baking. I cannot say no, no matter what! I love homemade baked goods.
I'm glad you're dialing in your training plan. No one wants you to get injured, but we want you running! :thumbsup2

AFM: I tried to download the picture of Frank and me at the fundraiser, but it's copyrighted. So, here's a link:

http://kansascityzoo.smugmug.com/Events/Jazzoo-2011-Beginning/17368236_JSXxNT#1320909754_6ktwXPQ

We are in the middle picture on top and the one to the right of it (also the big one all the way to the right). Neither one is a great pic, and you can't see my stupid shoes! But, it was still awesome!

I made it through 2 quizzes in chemistry and think I'm going to manage this. I got an 87.5% and an 82.5% and I didn't even understand the stuff we were learning. So, now we're onto elements and the periodic table. Just memorizing, which I think I'll be better at. :thumbsup2 My lab partner is awesome, which is a great thing!

I've only managed 2 runs this week, 3 miles each. I'm going to get a really long run in on Friday, and then, I had to sign up for a last minute 5k for Saturday morniing. I'm getting 100 points for my running class! :thumbsup2 I want a good time, like anything under 23 minutes, but the heat and humidity are really messing up my time. I'm barely getting 8 minute miles right now and today I cramped up. Something about jumping out of bed at 4:30 and heading straight out the door is messing with my hydration. I am usually able to get a couple glasses of water in first. For next week, I'm going to have to figure something out.

Hi leanies! Tandy - Your photos are great! You and Frank look awesome! I love the animal prints and the red bow is awesome! I'm glad you got a great lab partner! A good partner can make such a big difference when it comes to class enjoyment. And congrats on your awesome quiz scores!! For running early in the morning, I try to hydrate as much as I can the night before. It also helps to get me out of the bed in the morning LOL

Jackie - Glad to hear you're scaling back on your run/walk intervals. I think 1/1 is still pretty good and who knows what will happen between now and October. I meant to ask you what days you're going to be in DC for.

Maria - How did your presentation go? I can't believe your inlaws left their car at your house. I'm all for saving money but not if it's at the expense of someone else. I hope they bring you back something awesome! Sorry to hear about the incident with your pastor... :( Were you able to work something out?

Manda - Congrats on the marathon relay! I've always wanted to do one of those! I hear ya on the weight loss! But maybe now that it's summer, it will be a little bit easier - easier to get out, more access to fruits and veggies and I know with the hot weather I usually don't eat as much.

AFM - Sorry to be MIA! Work has been a bit busy! The weather here has been hot and humid so I haven't done as much running as I would have liked. I did go onto one of the group buy sites and I picked up 7 training sessions at a nearby gym. I figure it's a good opportunity to give another trainer a try. I did a fitness assessment yesterday and it seemed to go pretty well. I was able to do most of the exercises, except a pushup right from the floor. Go figure! I was also happy with my resting heart rate which was 52. I always thought it would have been higher. The trainer noticed a few things - he said I tend to favour my right leg more when I run and said the IT band was really tight on that side. He also said my left knee felt off - we all knew that already. He's said he use to be sprinter in university so I guess he knows a bit about running mechanics. He also does fitness modeling so that's a bonus right :) The sessions are consecutive though so we'll see how I do training for seven days straight! Yikes!

I started looking at some condos downtown. Either everything is expensive or I just don't make enough (note to self: go and buy a lotto ticket for tomorrow  ). I was talking to one of my friends at work about it and she's kind of in the same situation. So she suggested the idea of getting a two bedroom rental and being roommates. I hesitated a bit at first because I thought what if I'm a bad roommate LOL But I'm trying to get out of the habit of doing that! The only thing is that she smokes but she doesn't ever smell like cigarettes so I'll have to ask her about that. Anyway, that would fulfill my goal for moving out by the end of the year :) So I'm not doing too badly! I just move slowly LOL

I'll try to check in and let you know how the training sessions go.

Anyway have a great day ladies! :wave2:

Good Afternoon, Lovely Leanies!

Tandy -- I love the photos, cute dress! And Frank looks so dapper! Great job on the chemistry. I find science to by a mystical realm :rolleyes1 And purely for your enjoyment...I was really happy on Tuesday because I did 4M in under 44 minutes for the first time. :rotfl: We all have to chug along with our own speeds and abilities :thumbsup2

Jackie -- Audits are a nightmare! I am lucky in that I actually have very little to provide our auditors, but they take over our conference room, and come in very early, and curtail my office laps :headache: What is the reasoning for the cutback in the Galloway base? I'm just wondering if there's some exciting new science  I should learn about. :teacher:

Vicky -- I hope the new trainer continues to be helpful, it's good to shake things up every once in awhile! The pastor hasn't said another word to me about it, I think she's so focused on her retirement, she doesn't want to waste her energy on me, which is good :thumbsup2

Well, yesterday I became a year older...but not wiser :rotfl: I realized I started this post quite awhile ago, and now I have to do a webinar, so no time to chat about me. Consider me slogging along, with some ups and downs, just continuing to have a good life. :goodvibes

Maria :upsidedow

Tandy - Love the pictures! The dress is amazing. And Frank looks fabulous too. I dared to step back on the scale this morning. It was not good news, but I suspected that from the way my clothes were fitting. This summer will not be an easy time with DD wanting to bake. Currently there's a fabulous chocolate cake on the counter. As for hydration, the best you can do is super-hydrate the day before, but that means you'll be up half the night!

Vicky - Our plans for DC are to go up Friday morning and leave Monday morning. Or at least that's what I did last year, and that's what my reservations are for. Now that DH is going, I have a feeling he'll throw all sorts of kinks into my plans. And horror of horrors, he suggested inviting his mom and stepdad to come along. :scared1: I can already see the arguments when I tell him I have tons of plans already made. Then again, it could be a good thing. I'll send him on his way and go where I want!

Maria - The audit is more than just a financial audit, so I get to do pretty much the entire thing. She goes through personnel files and safety regulations in addition to checking on all the bookkeeping procedures. I expect to lose four entire days answering her questions. Yippee! As for the Galloway schedule, apparently we've never been in compliance with the national plan, and Jeff and the program director have decided it's time we play along. They're concerned that we're not getting enough recovery time on the cutback weeks, and we also haven't been doing multiple Magic Miles during the season like we're supposed to. So they've revamped the schedule to reflect the lower mileage during the off weeks.

So we did a tempo run last night, and I tried the 1/1 intervals to see how they'd work. I ran 1/1 for two miles after our warmup, doing my runs at a 10:30 pace and trying to keep my walk at about a 15:00 pace. I averaged 12:30, and I need to do a 12:35 average if I want a 5:30 marathon. And I have 4 months to tweak and improve. Now I just have to get past the pain that results for the 24 hours after I do anything like that...

Just read on the RW Facebook page about the Boomtown Half-Marathon and 5K that was supposed to be held in Joplin this weekend. They've canceled the race, but are keeping registration open and giving all the money to the relief effort. So I'm registered for a 5K on Saturday in Joplin that I won't actually run, although I'll run 8 miles here instead! Really cool idea.

Jackie

Happy Friday Night!!!!! I had the best day today. Homework, homework and more homework. :)

Jackie: That's awesome that you're signing up for the Joplin race! :cheer2: I did too. I actually needed a race this weekend or next for my running class, and, when looking at the list, saw the Joplin one mentioned. It made me sad, but at least they're going to use it for good. Sorry about your audit. Yikes. Frank went through something similar last year. He had someone follow him and all the carriers in his post office for a couple of weeks, just counting everything. Very frustrating.
Also, sorry about the scale. But, at least you weren't surprised. I think your plans for a 5:30:00 are totally doable. I didn't realize that the Galloway groups had to follow his strict plan. Whoops.

Maria: Happy belated birthday!!!!:cake: Don't worry, I won't ask how old you are.
11 minute miles are awesome! I think most anyone would be thrilled with that. I'm just super duper competitive. ;)

Vicky: I hope you can get your own place. I know how much you want it. If you decide to move in with the other girl, hopefully, she'll be an easy going roommate. You can totally do a push up straight from the floor. You are the pushup queen. What happened? Maybe it's harder than I'm thinking. I know I can't do one, but thought you could.

AFM: I'm going to take everyone's advice and start drinking more water at night. But, yes, I'll be up all night.

I got up at 4 today with no alarm clock, so I think I've finally acclimated to the new schedule. Got all my algebra homework done, took 2 online running tests (only got 80% and 90% on them, but I'll make up for it on the last one), got my 16 week training plan turned in (worth 100 points), did a 6 mile run, 2 mile bike ride with Harrison, took the dog for a walk, cleaned the house, did the laundry and now, we're getting ready to head out to the first of 4 baseball games this weekend. Harrison is in a tournament, and we're going to get creamed, but it'll still be fun!

Then, I have to get to bed early tonight because I'm running that obligatory 5k tomorrow. I have about 500,000 pages to read and study for chemistry as well as trying to get organized for our big test on Tuesday.

I hope everyone has a less busy weekend than mine. :)

Just had to come on here and let you guys I know I rocked my 5k. 22:06!!!!! I was 3rd overall in women and probably in the top 10 overall, but I'm not 100% sure on that one yet.

Happy Monday Leanies! Hope everyone is doing well! I thought I'd give us a bump back up to the top!

Tandy - Congrats on a great race!! I would be so happy just to place in my age group but 3rd overall is amazing!! How did you celebrate? Are you sure you were the Roadrunner in a previous life? And you have just got a jammed packed schedule with working out and school but it seems that you've got it all under control! WTG!!

The other girl is someone at work. We usually go out for lunch or to see the occasional movie. I'm pretty sure we'd get along. Of course I can't seem to get buying something out of my head but everyone says go and rent for a year to see what I like and don't like. Part of it has to do with my parents - they think it's throwing money away if I rent. I've explained to them that even if I buy, the first few years of mortgage payments just goes to the bank and toward repaying interest. So whether I give the money to the bank or to a landlord, it's the same. They don't see it that way.

The pushup was directly from the floor. With other pushups, you start slightly off the floor - almost in plank position. With this pushup, my body was flat on the floor and so were my arms. The trainer said I couldn't curve my torso to "pushup" (think of how a cobra position starts). I could only use my arms to lift my body. I couldn't do it.

Jackie - I hear ya on the scale and having baked goods around is never easy. Once you get back into higher mileage, it won't matter as much because you'll be burning it off. One suggstion I could make to DD is to half or quarter the recipes. A lot of the dessert bars I was baking called for 9x13 pans. Even if my mom, dad and sister were eating them, it was a crazy amount of sweets. I moved down to a 9x9 pan it was still too big! I ended up with a 6x6 pan which is about the right size. Plus you end up using fewer ingredients which means you can bake a bigger variety of sweets.

Send DH and family to the musuems and we'll go to Georgetown Cupcakes and go shopping! Did I tell you that I'm feeling nervous about MCM and it's so far away.

Maria - Happy belated birthday! How did you celebrate? It's good to have a balance of ups and downs - I've found that it makes you appreciate the ups! And WTG on your 4 miler!! Awesome pace!

AFM - It was a bit of a crazy weekend which started on Friday morning. I booked a training session for 6:30AM which means I was up by 5AM so I could eat and shower. I know how early you get up Tandy so I'm definitely not complaining! I kind of like the early morning training - it made me feel more awake and it gets things out of the way. I really like the new trainer but don't think I'll be able to afford his training sessions. Between saving up to move and the new gym being a little inflexible with the sessions (I can't do 1/2 hour sessions, just the full hour), I can't fit it into my budget. Kind of crummy but I still have two trainers that I like very much. My sessions with him run out on Wednesday so I'll probably have to tell him soon. I hope he doesn't give me less attention during our sessions because of that. I'm back tonight for another hour of training.

I did a 14K run yesterday on a route with rolling hills. It kicked my butt big time. I did ok on the first two hills but the hills on the final two miles were tough! I'm going to try and get in another 6K tonight after training. My 5K race is this Saturday but I'm not expecting to break any records.

A friend of mine who had disappeared a couple of months ago has mysteriously resurfaced. He didn't have much in the way to explain what had been going on in his life. A lot of his friends had been concerned and tried to text, email or call but he just ignored us. I got a text from him asking if I wanted to hang out but I didn't feel like it without an explanation. I finally managed to drag out of him that he had been transitioning to a new position and that he had been hanging out with some girl. He claimed that he couldn't text or talk while she was around - I call BS on that. Anyway, I was a little upset because he didn't really seem to care about what I had been doing or had been up to - he only cared about talking about himself, his car, his job... WHAT-EVER!

Oh and this is a bit funny ... on Friday, we were making cream puff pastries and eclairs in the baking class. Our group had two trays of eclairs and 4 trays of cream puffs that went into the oven. The trays were marked with our names on them. When they came out of the oven, we "lost" a tray of eclairs and a tray of cream puffs. Someone had walked away with them. Really disappointing for a class of adults. I would have happily given most of my desserts away if someone had asked. But because they were taken, everyone in my group had a little less practice filling the puffs or cutting the eclairs.

Anyway, that was my weekend! How's everyone doing? :wave2:

Hi, new here and I have been telling my husband one of my goals is to do a run at Disney next year. Right now I wear out after 20 minutes of Zumba, but I am working out 4 days a week. I'm not sure how long it takes to prepare oneself for a real run but I feel it is realistic to expect to be ready by Jan 2012 for a 5K. I've never done a run before but I really love Disney and I really want another trip and am working on a weight loss, diet and exercise lifestyle change so it's a perfect fit to make that a goal. Hoping to learn from other's experience and knowledge. I have a milestone birthday coming up and want to celebrate by being in the best shape I have ever been in and do my first run at Disney!

Hi Cin! Welcome! I think if you dedicate a bit of time each day to running and follow a training plan, you'll be ready for a 5K waaay before January 2012. When I first started running, I was fairly out of shape and just kind of jumped in. I trained from January to May and ran a 15K at the beginning of May. It wasn't my best race by far but I finished it :)

Make sure you incorporate some core work, dynamic stretching, cross training and/or weights into your workout routine. You don't want to be running all the time because that will just result in over training.

Have you looked at the Couch to 5K plan (C25K)? I've heard that's an excellent plan for beginner runners. Also think about registering in a local race or two before January. That will give you a general feel for what happens during a race and how they work.

Oh ... and make sure you get fitted for a pair of running shoes at a running store. A lot of people I know have tried to go running on shoes that they've had for years. Sometimes the shoes are worn out or not suitable so it can lead to injuries.

Anything else... just ask :)

Thanks for the advice and tips! I am glad to know that my goal is highly attainable. I'd like to run the Food and Wine Festival run in Oct, but not sure I can afford the trip at that point. I will check into local runs though as they do have them here but the Beach to Bay relay is nearly 4.5 -5 miles per segment so I have chickened out from trying that one but working up to it next May. And I know the Harbor Half is well, half a marathon and just too much for a newbie. But yeah, I will see about maybe Relay for Life or others that may offer a 5K. I've done a 5K walk, so I've a little experience but never at a "run" pace. I sort of just buy shoes off the rack that feel good and I do wear running shoes (Asics gel) at work since I am on my feet walking on hard concrete covered in tile for 12.5 hrs a day. I have another identical (except color) pair just for my walking and interval training. I do Zumba and then stretching and some resistance exercises with the stretchy bands and the ball, but not really any weight training. I didn't realize how out of shape I was until the last "kid" went to college and I started having time for Me. Now being an empty nester and having time for myself I can get back into shape and start doing my own thing. Yay! Okay so thanks again for the welcome.

Hello leanies! Happy hump day :)

Cin - Sounds like you've got a good workout routine! It's never too late to start living a healthy lifestyle and exercising. Some people are admant about being fitted for running shoes by a running store. A physio I use to work with didn't feel it necessary for all the different shoe types - he was all about running in the shoes that were the most comfortable and were pain-free. That said, he wasn't a runner. So who knows. I've gone to different running shoe stores to get fitted and have been told by one person that I should be in a stability shoe while another suggested I definitely needed a motion control shoe. A lot of this is subjective and you'll figure it out as you go. If your distances are short, just make sure you're not running on worn out shoes and keep one pair exclusively for running so you can track the mileage on it. Oh also get good socks :) They'll help when your feet get sweaty and be less likely to rub your foot raw.

I'll bet the first time you go for that 5K race, you'll run it, cross the finish line and feel like you could keep going another mile or two :thumbsup2 Do you have running groups in your area, they know of local races and go out for weekday/weekend practice runs.

AFM - I did a heavy arm routine yesterday. Lots of shoulder work along with weighted squats. I'm suppose to do more leg work today but will ask the trainer to tone it down a bit because of the 5K on Saturday.

The scale hasn't budged even though I've worked out every day for the past week in addition to the running. :headache: My clothes feel looser and I feel like I have more energy but I just want that stupid scale to acknowledge my hard work  Maybe it was that can of sugar pop I had on Sunday after my LR. There wasn't anymore Gatorade or chocolate milk left so I improvised  Anyway, I feel good so I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing.

I made a batch of blueberry lemon muffins last night. It was a bit of making room in the fridge. They're actually not too terrible calorie wise (about 170 cal) and there's less sugar in there than other recipes. You could probably substitute coconut sugar and have it taste the same (the muffin might be a bit darker). I'll post the recipe in a bit. I took some pics so I'll throw those up on Facebook later. I've eaten 1, saved 1, given 6 to my family and the final four away to friends.

Hope everyone is having a great day! :wave2:

Hello ladies. I hope everyone is doing well. For those of you not posting, I hope you are able to check in and doing okay. :)

Vicky: It sounds like your cooking class is going great. It must be fun to get to experiment in the kitchen. I've reached the point in life that I no longer care. Just as long as there's food, we're good! But, I do love to bake. I just don't do much of it anymore. :guilty: How weird to have a puffed pastry thief! Really? What is wrong with people?

I'm always amazed at how hard you go at the gym. You are amazing! I tried your floor pushup, and, unless I can bend my back, I can't do it either. And, I have a lot of upper body strength. So, I'm sure it's no reflection on your ability. It's just stinkin hard!

I would, normally, agree with your parents about rent vs. mortgage, but..... renting is a way for you to get out there, on your own. We've all done it in the beginning.

Sorry about your jerky friend! Whatever the reason, he should feel somewhat bad about it, and he should be interested in what's been going on in your life since he vanished.

How's the training going for the 30k?

Cin: Welcome. Sorry I didn't get on sooner. This is a great place to share ideas about being healthy and to hold yourself accountable. :thumbsup2
So, are you wanting to run the Wine and Dine half marathon? The zumba and being able to walk the 5k is great, but you'll definitely have to get a good training plan together to run a half. May I ask what the big milestone is? I turned 40 last year and ran my first race (a half marathon) as a celebration. Now, I'm hooked!

AFM: Well, after almost 2 weeks of school, I've managed a high A in running (duh) and algebra. I somehow, through the grace of God, managed a low A in chemistry! So far, we've had 4 quizzes and an exam. It's just moving at such a fast pace!

As for running, apparently I ran way too fast in that 5k. I didn't run again for 3 whole days! but, I finally got out there this morning and ran really slow! I have to keep a running log for my class, and haven't done that in a long time. It's kind of nice to rush home and write it all down again. Reminds me I need to be training for a race. :guilty: I just know that I can't right now. No time.

Eating has been atrocious! I have gained back 4 pounds, and have got to get in control again! I completely gave up the clean eating. I have still managed to stay vegetarian, but it's really easy to eat junk as a veg.

Hi ladies.
I am not back to a normal routine of checking this board yet, but I hope to become more regular in that and in my training.

I have been gearing up for the DL half in September. It sounds far away, but I know it will be here sooner than I know. I have been trying really hard to train with my DH but, let me tell you, that can be SO frustrating. We went our for a run yesterday. We decided we would take it super easy and go about 6 miles. OK, my super easy and his were way different. He was killing me going so slow. But I was worried that his knee is out of wack (he won't go to a running store to get shoes because they are "too expensive" so I think he has the wrong shoes) so I didn't try to push him too much. But I had to work really hard to keep jogging and not just walk next to him. I love the idea of training together, but yesterday KILLED me. I was happy to know that I could have done so much more, but I guess I am learning patience too. That is a good thing, right?

I also signed up for the Las Vegas R&R in December, so now I have 2 half marathons in my future. Here is hoping I can do good at at least one of those.

I have 1 month until my 6 month weigh in for my class. I am a little disappointed in myself. I lost 28 pounds in the first 3 months, and since then I am only down about 4 or 5. I have gone on vacation a couple times and done very badly. I was proud of myself for losing the 5 pounds I gained (twice) but wish I had done more. My plan is to kick it up a notch the next few weeks. WE will see how that goes.

You are amazing ladies! Keep it up!

Hi leanies!

Tandy - Training for the 30K is going well. Next week will be week #6. I'm slowly working my way back up to the half distance. July will be a month of running 21K LRs every weekend. It's suppose to alternate between 21K and 25K but I found that was too much. Did you make a decision on the ultra marathon for next year? Sounds like your classes are going well! I like the sound of the As :) What kind of classes do you have on your schedule this fall?

I was pretty upset at my friend. When I told him about my new trainer (he hadn't even seen his picture) he said I was training with him because of his looks. I asked if he'd actually seen pictures of my other trainers - they're not ugly but they're not models either. Then when I explained to him how dangerous it would be workout with someone who didn't know what they were doing, he said I was being too defensive. WHAT?! Anyone who knows me, knows I love to workout and run. So I maybe I had a quick reaction but I was really offended, especially by his "quit drooling" comment. I mean really? A joke is a joke but I guess he just pushed my buttons

Manda - As long as you keep losing, you're doing something right! I think the speed at which we lose weight is dependant on so many things ... sleep, stress etc. It's hard to keep control over everything at once. You know, I had the same problem running with my ex. I'd tend to run a lot faster than he did. What I would do is either run on a track so we could each go at our own pace or go for my run first and then come back and run with him - that would only for shorter runs though :) I like your quote in your signature btw!

AFM - So I did sign up for several training sessions. I guess I needed someone to drool over   I did get a bit of a deal after talking to the owner. He told me a few interesting things about the gym that I'm at right now. I guess when an industry is small enough, word gets around. He seemed to know about the turnover there and why the trainers were not happy. Did some lighter leg work with the trainer last night and some more upper body work. I skipped my 2 mile run afterward because I had to catch up on a few errands. I'm back at my old gym tonight for a half hour.

I ordered a sushi lunch for a meeting that we had today. I made sure there was a lot of different stuff - salmon pieces, California rolls, pieces with tempura and mayo, veggie and some edamame. Well, you can probably guess which ones went - someone left an almost full container of edamame on my desk. Oh well :) I like edamame.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicki: I love that quote too. I have had to use it on myself quite a few times. Just because I don't have time to run for an hour doesn't mean I don't have time to run for half an hour. Just because I can't run doens't mean I can't walk. It applies in all sorts of situations in my life, especially because I am a master excuse maker. I haven't tried a gym and a trainer. I don't know if it is the money thing or the commitment thing that keeps me away (or the "I am not a gym person" thing).

AFM: I ended up taking a rest day yesterday because I was just too busy. But it is ok, I didn't have one scheduled in for this week, so yesterday worked well as a rest. I hope to run some intervals today. I haven't really worked on speed work before, but now that I am focusing more on running than walking I think it will help. It also takes some of the pressure off when I run slow on long days, because I know I will at least get to push the speed on my interval days. I don't know if DH is going to want to go with me or not. He said he knees were hurting him this morning. I told him I was going to go and he could come on his bike or come walk along with me. I dont' know what will happen. But actually it is clouding up outside right now, so my luck will be thunderstorms by the time I get home from work (still have 2 hours). Then I dont' know what I will be doing.

Have a Great Thursday Girls!

Manda: My hubby and I worked out a way to work out together where he wouldn't hold me back: he rides his bike while I run. It also works out extra for me because he can carry the water and a backpack with all our junk! He's not a runner anyway, but if he was, he'd be way too slow for me. I think you should be very happy with that weight loss. To keep losing, even with going on vaca and not being perfect, is pretty darned good! :thumbsup2

Vicky: You are actually quite brave to work out with a hot pt. I wouldn't want a guy that looked really great to train me. I look like crud when I'm working out and I would always be focused on how bad I looked. I'm glad the training is going well. Yes, I'm going to do the ultra. I have made Frank aware that I'm going to do it. Now, I just need him to get on board. ;) Of course, we'll see where I am in September or so when I need to start training. My fall schedule is college algebra, english comp, anatomy & physiology (very excited for this class), and a certified nurses aid class. I am going to be physically in class from 8:30 to 4, five days a week! :scared1: But, the cna class is over after 5 weeks, and then, I only go to school 2 days a week. If I can make it through those 5 weeks, I'm set. The rest of my semesters should be pretty easy with just 3 classes, and only 2 in the summers. I'm starting to enjoy myself, finally. I just hating sitting for 5 or 6 hours a day. I'm not used to it!
Oh, and good luck in your race tomorrow!

AFM: Trying desperately to find time today to run 8. I got all my algebra homework done last night and this morning, but I've got so many errands to do. Plus, another big quiz in chem on Monday. I need to just keep reminding myself that running is homework too, right?;)

Tandy: You are a brave woman to be trying to fit in running and homework. There is a reason I gained a million pounds while I was in school. You are an inspiration! When I start making excuses about not having time to fit running in I need to remember you and kick myself into gear.

AFM: Training for DL has been going well. We did a 8 mile day a few weeks ago, but were back to 5 this saturday. This will be my first "running" race. I have walked my other races. I started with all walking, then added intervals, but still walked at least 75% of the race. Right now I am training with the intent of running at least 90% of the race. Sounds crazy to me :scared1: I was joking with my hubby that I have changed from a wogger (walk/jogger) to a slogger (slow jogger). I dont' know which is better. I was pretty excited taht we were able to tie 5 sub 12 min miles together on Saturday. Every little accomplishment counts.

It was a really bad eating weekend for me. I had great plans to do well - but then we went to DH's grandparent's house, and somehow that turned into me eating a ton of Mexican food. I dont' know how I totally lost sight of my goals, but I reverted back to my old way of thinking. I knew the food we had wouldn't heat up well, so I ate it rather than letting it go to waste. I guess I still have some work to do in my thinking process. Sadly I let that disappointment run into Sunday when I seriously don't know what I ate. I just kept eating and eating. Back on the wagon today though and doing alright.

I hope to get in a few miles after work today, but I am fighting a migrain, so it may turn into a walk. Running and killer headaches don't go well together.

Manda - I hear you on the running and migraines not mixing. There's something about the pounding on the pavement that just really doesn't help the headache. I did last week's track workout after a 30 minute nap and a dose of Imitrex, but it was not my best workout.

Vicky - I thought of you last night. As we were getting dressed to head to the track, DD had the TV on watching one of her many wedding shows. It switched to some other show, and they were featuring Georgetown Cupcake. I screamed and told DH that we were going there during MCM weekend. He looked at me like I'd lost my mind. I told him he didn't have to go, but I had a date with a WISH buddy!

Cin - Welcome! The one thing I learned from being fitted at a running store was that I needed a much larger size than I regularly wore. It might be worth giving it a try, just once, to see what they say. I buy most of my running clothes as cheaply as I can (Target), but I don't mind spending money on my shoes. I didn't start running until my mid-40's, and my first race was a 5K at WDW. I NEVER thought I'd run any longer distance. I'm now training for my 5th full. But I do run/walk, and I discovered that I can do much more than I ever though possible! So find that 5K, and dream big. Wine & Dine may be too soon, but January isn't, and the Princess certainly isn't.

Tandy - You are AMAZING! I may work full time, but your schedule is exhausting me just reading about it. And to get all the studying in, and get the grades you're getting, and still run the miles... wow. Just wow.

And apparently this food addiction that we've all been suffering from is contagious. I spent the past week eating anything and everything in sight. And the more chocolate I could find, the better. True, it was TOM week, but this was ridiculous. I wouldn't even consider going near the scale now. I'm certain it would laugh at me. I might even have discovered a new "decade." Considering I was toying with seeing a 13- number, the idea that it might say 15- is enough to keep me from looking. But apparently not enough to keep me from eating. :rotfl:

And the bad part is that I can't run it off. I can run, and I can do my long runs at slow paces. But I can't run my short runs at any intensity. I have to keep them fairly simple to keep the hip from hurting, so I'm not getting the calorie burn that I was last summer. :sad2: So I'l be the blimp at MCM trying for that ever elusive 5:30...

Jackie

Hi Leanies!

Jackie - LOL I'm so looking forward to Georgetown cupcake!! I'm trying to think of a way to bring back a few to Toronto. Nobody here knows how to make a good red velvet cupcake. Maybe I'll finally buy that cupcake carrier I wanted :) I hear ya on long runs and pace. Last summer, I didn't think too much about what I was eating either because of the pace and distance I was able to run. Do you have a weights routine you can do? My old PT told me that weights were great for overall weight loss because the muscles would keep your metabolism going even when you weren't doing cardio. I'm also going to suggest journalling because that helped to keep me accountable. Even though I was the only person looking at it, I didn't want to see all the snacks. Try this site http://www.loseit.com - you can use the site or they have an iPhone app as well.

Manda - I also grew up in a house where it was bad to waste food. It's stuck with me for a while and it's a habit that's hard to get out of. I now think of it this way - if you're not wasting food, it's going to your waist ;) I put your quote onto my phone's notepad. Whenever there's something I'm not sure I can do, I think of the quote... I think what's the worst that will happen and usually the worst isn't that bad :) I'm also fantastic at making excuses too!

Tandy - I think the PT has a girlfriend so I don't even think about that when we're training. I know what you mean though - I sweat a lot so even when I go for a walk at lunch, I'm sweaty. He's a little more touchy than the other trainers I've worked with so I'm always wondering whether he finds that gross. I'm guessing no because I still get a pat on the back or he'll correct my form when I'm lifting. And you are an awesome inspiration for getting in all the workouts AND your homework done AND those amazing grades!!

Maria/Debra/Cindy/Beth/Jeanne - :wave2:

AFM - I ran my 5K on Saturday. It was out at the airport on an open runway. It was awesome watching the planes take off and land while we were running. I'm sure all those people must have been wondering what the heck we were doing on the runway. My only complaint about the race was that they let kids "run" the 5K. I have no problem with someone who's maybe older than 7 or 8 running but when you have 4 and 5 year olds who want to start up front, that's a problem. A lot of the kids would stop when they realized they'd run too far from their parents and runners would have to dodge around them. That was a really good way to get trampled I think. My first interval was amazing! I was running 8:32 m/m and didn't feel like I was working hard at all. I hit the half way mark and got stitches :( I had to take lots of walking breaks and even though I managed to keep the other intervals under 9:00 m/m, it wasn't good enough for a PB. I finished in 27:58 which I'm happy with for my first race since the ankle sprain.

I did a 10 miler on Sunday and was planning to do my hills route but I got out a bit late and the thought of running a mile of rolling hills with no shade didn't appeal to me. I ended up going through an older neighbourhood just south of me which was quite nice. I hadn't run through there before - the houses were cute and there were lots of big trees making the road shady. Still it was hot and I have to get into the habit of getting out at least an hour earlier.

Worked out last night and did lots of leg work - leg presses, squats with weights which I hadn't done before and pushing a heavy sandbag back and forth across the gym floor. Pushing the bag isn't that hard but when I alternate with lifting, it gets a bit tough. Overall it was a good workout! I have to say that after working out with the new trainer I don't feel like scarfing snacks or sweets much. Maybe the workouts are just more intense. I'm not sure.

I'd better get back to work! Have a great day ladies! :wave2:
