Work trip vent-stuck in Deerfield

I have booked all my travel-air & hotel-to go to FL for my company's Xmas party in Ft Lauderdale. I decided to stay in Deerfield because I was going to hang out with one of the girls from work who lives there. This way, it would be easier for me to ride with her to the Xmas party, work, etc. I just found out she will have to work the weekend I'm there , so I am either stuck at work for the entire weekend, or I will have to put someone else out. I was originally hoping there would be stores, etc around my hotel to pass time, but the hotel clerk said they don't even have a mall in their town... I am not a beach person...anyone familiar with the area that knows of something to do?
I will not have a car, and just found out it would cost 52. one way to take a cab to the Sawgrass Mills Mall. I'm sure I will still ride with her to the Xmas party, but I would love to be somewhat independant for the rest of the trip- Fri-Sun.

Frann, why don't you try to rent a compact car for a couple of days. Maybe even try priceline if it is available in that area. I would hate to be stuck paying for a cab. I would think if you are willing to take a small compact, that you could probably get one cheap. At least then you could do some sight seeing on your own.

That would be the intelligent thing to do, but I really stink at directions and, as my DH can attest to, driving in general. I do drive here, but try to stay local. I'd hate the most memorable part of the trip to be me having driven all the way to GA by accident.

Frann, I put Dec. 17-19 in on Travelocity(I'm not sure what your dates are), and came up with about $75 for the weekend on a rental out of Fort Lauderdale. I think it would be worth it to me, even if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket(if you can). If not, maybe your boss will split it with you.

My parents live in Deerfield. If you can swing an inexpensive rental, there are many fun things to do within a 15 min. drive. Boca Raton is right next door, and there are many nice, upscale shopping and dining opportunities there. There is also a waterfront restaurant there where you can catch a boat ride up and down the intercoastal. I would contact the Boca Raton chamber of commerce and look for options.
